You think I know what mi jefe is on about half the time? Oye! I speak both the languages he does and even then I'm at as much of a loss as you amigo.

Gabriel, Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era

Gabriel García Márquez (ガブリエル・ガルシア=マルケス - Gaburieru Garushia = marukesu) is a former member of Mimic who is now under the mentorship of Miguel De Cervantes. He now works as his personal assistant. Gabriel is investigating the actions of The Order of the Clock Tower to gather evidence to prove their involvement in the destruction of Mimic.

Appearance

Gabriel is a naturally handsome looking young man who radiates energy and positivity in the way he appears and carries himself. He is around average height for a man, with Colombian features and a deep tanned complexion. He has high cheekbones, a skinny but not unhealthy looking body and perfectly smooth skin with no visible scars or marks. Not seen as he covers up, he does get quite an ample amount of chest and stomach hair, black and curly, but he does keep it well groomed. Gabriel's face, by comparison, does not get much stubble and he rarely has to shave beyond twice a week. His eyes are almond shaped and a chocolate brown colour, with ridiculously long eyelashes for a man, and most often Gabriel's eyes always sparkle with energy to compliment the cheerful grin on his lips. Gabriel keeps his hair cut short, and never lets it grow beyond his chin and the nape of his neck. It sticks out in all directions in a messy mop of chocolate brown curls, that can appear black in low lighting, that he always keeps silky and shiny. Gabriel is very proud of his good looks and knows people find him attractive.

Most of the time Gabriel wears modest, traditional style clothing from his homeland of Colombia. However, modest does not mean plain. On his head, he is never seen without his bright red sunhat that's tied with a zigzag patterned ribbon around it. The ribbon matches the sash he wears around his waist over his thigh-length white tunic. The tunic is loose and has sleeves that reach the middle of his upper arms. His scarlet hat also matches the red necktie he is never seen without, tied in a friendship knot. Over his tunic but under the necktie, Gabriel wears a wood brown poncho, keeping it longer at the back than at the front so that he can work with his hands better, and it is decorated with intricate red and orange square patterns. He has loose knee-length leggings that are black, and ash grey ankle boots that he wears for both comfort and practicality. Gabriel also has a lot of jewellery on his person for sentimental reasons. His ears are both pierced with gold studs, but are unseen beneath his hair, and he has a gold crucifix around his neck with a red gemstone in the centre and a similar gold gross on a red and gold beaded rosary round his left wrist. He also has two gold bands on the same wrist bearing the names "Isabel" and "Miguel" after his two companions.

Personality

Gabriel is, at heart, a man who just wants to avoid conflict and confrontation on all fronts. He is very relaxed by nature and prefers to settle things with the least amount of complex negotiation or violent physical action as possible. Ideally, he wants a stress free, nap filled existence. Though he is peaceful, he is not lazy and actually prides himself on being extremely productive and successful without the need to overly stress or exert himself. Gabriel is also a highly intelligent man, priding himself in his strong talking and planning skills as well as a lot of experience in organising and managing others around him. He is also passionate, and can get highly emotional about the subjects he is most interested in or when he has a project he is particularly proud of. This can lead him to get quite loud, but without him realising just how much noise he is making.

Because of his good nature, Gabriel is always trying to be optimistic and see the bright side of life and those around him. He is strongly self-assured and confident, but won't show off or brag about his achievements. Rather, he would prefer to simply get along well with people rather than compete or consider himself inferior or superior to them. Gabriel is also a strong believer in encouraging others to achieve their true potential, even at the expense of himself if he has to. His goals aren't self-motivated, he is all about working in teams or for the sake of others. Gabriel has a bit of a smart mouth, and his love of joking around can lead him to accidentally upset the wrong people, but he has a natural luck about him that always helps him escape trouble just at the last moment. No matter the danger he gets himself into, Gabriel always has an optimistic outlook that keeps him moving forward.

Ability

Kanji: 予告された死のクロニクル

Romaji: Yokoku sa reta shi no kuronikuru

English: Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Spanish: Crónica De Una Muerte Anunciada

Reference: Crónica De Una Muerte Anunciada

Ability Classification: Supernatural

Appearance: As it is constantly active, Gabriel’s ability appears as a slight red glow in the irises of his eyes. It can appear like a ticking clock face, or sometimes the light flickers and becomes a counting down timer, but usually it is too small to be clearly seen unless a person is truly looking for it. When Gabriel consciously chooses to activate his ability stronger the glow increases, showing bright red texts in his eyes and glowing around his body.

Capability: Gabriel’s ability allows him to foresee the remaining lifespans of people around him, and receive foresight into their potential deaths. People's life spans appear to him in the form of a counting down number that sits on a person's chest or back (depending on whether they are facing him or not) and he can constantly see them without consciously needing to activate anything in his ability. The smaller the number, the fewer the hours that a person has left to live. People's numbers also fluctuate, increasing when people engage in healthy or safe activities and decreasing when people risk their lives or become ill or injured. Other people's actions, including Gabriel's own actions with others, can also cause the numbers to fluctuate, giving him a means to try and affect others for good and increase their personal lifespans.

Limitations: Gabriel is unable to see his own lifespan, even in a mirror, and he is unable to directly inform people of their remaining lifespan. He can act upon the numbers he sees, but cannot tell people how long they have left to live - the words cannot be heard by the other person.

Side Effects: The more frequently he uses his ability, and the longer he keeps using it for prolonged periods, Gabriel has begun experiencing temporary bouts of blindness that last longer the more he has exerted himself. Thankfully, his sight does return to him eventually, and it is unlikely that it will make him permanently blind, but it does leave him very vulnerable.

Ultimate Form: When he chooses to, Gabriel can activate an ultimate form of his ability, by uttering the following quote:

"Nunca hubo una muerte más anunciada" - ("Never had there been a death more foretold")

Uttering this causes Gabriel's ability to fully activate, and it manifests in a similar manner to André Gide's "Straight is the Gate" and Oda Sakunosuke's "Flawless". For up to thirty seconds, Gabriel is given a complete vision of what the likely fate is for all others in the room with him, including any potential deaths, and how much people's lifespan numbers will be affected by what is to come. Using this, he is able to change his own actions and affect the outcome of the whole situation. It allows Gabriel to potentially save a lot of lives in a single moment. The cost, however, is that the ultimate form of his ability temporarily causes him to temporarily lose vision for several minutes once he stops using it. As such he is extremely cautious about that fact and tries to avoid activating his ultimate form.

He is considered to be one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, particularly in the Spanish language, and he was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. He started life as a journalist and remained critical of Colombian and foreign politics throughout his career. Gabriel wrote a number of non-fiction novels and stories and popularised the magical realism genre. His most famous works include: One Hundred Years of Solitude (ES: Cien años de soledad), Chronicle of a Death Foretold (ES: Crónica de una muerte anunciada) and Love in the Time of Cholera (ES: El amor en los tiempos del cólera).

  • From past experiences, he tends to be protective over female friends in particular. Isabel sometimes has to call him out for taking it a bit too far.

Background

Early Life

The son of a pharmacist and his stay-at-home wife who did laundry for the local community, Gabriel was born into a lowly family in the small town of Aracataca, Colombia. Though he was their only child, neither of Gabriel's parents made enough income in order to raise him around working and earning and as such he was left in the care of his maternal grandparents. His parents were almost complete strangers to him for most of his early life because of it, and Gabriel came to consider his grandfather and grandmother (whom he called "Papalelo" and "Abuelita" affectionately) as his true parental figures. Much of his childhood was shaped by the stories told to him by his grandparents and these would go on to shape his personality and worldview well into his adult life. From his grandfather, Gabriel was taught stories of the Colombian wars and of his grandfather's life as a soldier. He was told upon turning eight that "You can't imagine how much a dead man weighs" - a phrase that became his life motto. Equally, his grandmother would encourage and inspire him with stories of ghosts, omens, fantasy and the supernatural. He took on both and considered both his grandparents efforts equally important in his upbringing.

Because they did not have the money to send him to school straight away, Gabriel was home educated by his grandparents. Despite this, he excelled in both mathematics and literature, though he preferred the latter more. Numbers were confusing to him because, as he tried often to explain to those around him, he saw numbers everywhere and on everyone. They went up and down, and sometimes the things he did would change those numbers. But, most confusingly, he did not appear to have a number himself. Neither of his grandparents could believe it, nor explain it, and they had no idea about the existence of abilities or ability users at all (it is an extremely rare phenomenon in Colombia). They concluded it was simply a factor of childhood, in the same way that other children had imaginary friends, and decided to play along with it but not overly encourage it. They hoped that, given enough time, Gabriel would grow out of the phase.

As he grew up, Gabriel became deeply interested in writing and journalism. He would do bookkeeping for local shops as a means of earning easy money for his aging grandparents, and in his spare time he would also write poetry and short stories based upon his grandparents' stories. Both of these talents made him popular and well known for his talents, and by fourteen several local businesses pitched together in order to fund Gabriel to begin some formal education in a school in Bogota, the capital city. Gabriel applied for a course in journalism and travelled to the capital on his own - his first time living away from his family in his entire life.

Education

It took Gabriel a while to get used to the busy city life he found himself in in Bogota. Eventually, however, he became settled and started making proper friends his own age, both in and out of the university. To help pay for the tuition, as he did not want to solely rely upon the charity of others, he would publish short stories and write articles and reviews for local news that earned him considerable attention and enough money to support himself relatively independently. Though the workload was big, and Gabriel found he absolutely loathed shorthand immensely, he took to it well. He learnt English, some French, and did a lot of specialist research into ability biology using papers and research from Europe and the United States. A part of him hoped it would shed more light upon his own gift, realising once he started the research that his numbers matched up perfectly to how they described abilities. Enlightened, Gabriel continued his research in the hopes of finding out more about how to apply his findings to Colombia as well.

Unfortunately, these studies were interrupted when news reached Gabriel that his beloved grandparents were dying. Devastated, he returned home to them in order to be with them for their last few days and to say goodbye. That was where he saw their numbers slowly ticking down into single figures, and Gabriel knew that once they reached zero that they would both be gone. He spent a week back home, organising their affairs and ensuring they received proper burial and a funeral, but he was beyond upset with no one else to turn to for it. His parents had long since stopped contacting him, but Gabriel barely cared as they had hardly ever been a part of his life in the same way his grandparents had anyways. Eventually, once they were at peace and affairs were in place, he decided he would permanently return to Bogota and immerse himself in study and work.

It took some time, but by sixteen Gabriel had made a close circle of friends for himself. He was still doing well in his writings and making a living from them, and life was looking up for him. However, sooner rather than later he found himself falling into bad company in the city, as he worked and lived in the more dangerous and conservative districts of the city. A few of his friends were involved in the prevalent drugs scene, but aside from the occasional recreational experiment Gabriel never got deep into dealing or the like.

A Death Foretold

Instead, it was not long before a friend's family wedding that disaster struck. Gabriel was close to the boy, who came from a hyper conservative catholic family, and it turned out that his sister had been having sex outside of marriage. Whilst Gabriel saw no issue to this, having fooled around himself at parties a lot, it caused genuine fury and outrage for the girl's family, her brother included. They strongly felt that the girl's actions in having premarital affairs with men had brought great dishonour to their family. In Colombia, it was common among traditional and conservative families to punish or even kill family members who dishonoured the family, hoping that in doing so they would restore the honour for the rest of the family. Gabriel knew the girl was now placed in great danger, but because he wasn't close to her he was unsure what he could even do about it. His friend, at the same time, wanted Gabriel to be a part of his group who planned to kill her - and he was sickened that his friend could ever even consider killing his own sister let alone actually want to go through with it. It caused the two friends to have an irreparable falling out.

Worried and afraid for this girl's life, Gabriel was left at a loss for how best to help. Despite everything telling him it was dangerous to do so, he went to try and warn the girl of what was coming. Upon arrival he could see her number descending fast, indicating her impending death. He desperately tried to plead with the girl to run, and warned her over and over of what was about to happen, but she wouldn't listen. She had come to terms with the fact that she would be killed, and was even fine with her killer being her own brother, and wanted to just get it over with. It made Gabriel sad, and as he watched her number get lower and lower he knew there was little chance left, yet he still wanted to try. At the moment where his former friend was about to stab her, Gabriel awakened the ultimate form of his ability for the first time. Able to see all possible solutions Gabriel realised there were no ways in which the girl would survive. He was powerless to watch her die, and then after fall blind temporarily due to the side effect of his ability. It was something he’d never forgive himself for.

Leaving Home

Consequently, Gabriel decided he no longer wished to remain in Colombia. It was connected to too many sad memories for him and he needed a complete change to recover. Using the last of his savings, he bought himself a one way flight to Spain, thinking it would be easiest to start a new life there as the language was the same (not quite yet confident enough to move somewhere that required English constantly). Spain was a challenge, as he needed to quickly find himself a place to live and a job and there was a lot to get used to, but Gabriel managed to set himself up as a PA to a small company in Valladolid, just an hour or so outside of the nation's capital of Madrid.

It was there that Gabriel met a young Peruvian girl by the name of Isabel Allende who was also part timing as a PA. She was an ability user as well, and it was she who introduced him to the work of Mimic. The two joined together, happy to find a place where they could be accepted for their unusual abilities, and they worked hard under the guidance of André Gide. Mimic was a mostly military unit, but the two knew that soldiers needed more than just their weapons to function and they were more than happy to help assist in other ways whenever they could. Gabriel took the time to learn to defend himself, as well as take advantage of his ability in combat. Even if it appeared to have no practical use, he found there were other strategic ways he could use others’ lifespans to his advantage.

Fleeing

It was not to last, however, as Mimic were taken down and framed for genocide. It resulted in many of its former members being hunted down by The Order Of The Clock Tower and as such both Isabel and Gabriel fled for their lives. Whilst the rest of Mimic headed for Japan, they chose to remain behind and find somewhere they could blend in. Gabriel suggested they return to Spain, where they at least had language advantage and the chance to return to normal work in hiding. The difficulty, however, was that it would be hard to leave Mimic without alerting Agatha and her Clock Tower agents. Gabriel weighed the options, knowing neither he nor Isabel stood any kind of chance in a fight, and it began to look hopeless.

However, they were extremely lucky. One night, Gabriel was contacted by Miguel de Cervantes, an experienced ability user based in Spain. Having seen the actions of The Order of the Clock Tower and sensing danger, he had used his connections to organise safe passage out of France and back to Spain for both Gabriel and Isabel - offers they gladly accepted. In the dead of night they boarded a train and crossed into Spain - arriving in Madrid by the next morning. They were met by their mysterious helper, and Cervantes took them to his own personal safe house, wherein he provided them both with cover and the chance to work. They became his PAs, allowing them to use their abilities safely as well as earn a living. It was finally the new start that Gabriel had wanted all along.

The Armed Detective Agency

Atsushi.png

Atsushi Nakajima

You're gonna do big things tigre. So don't go dying needlessly.

Bond: ❤❤❤♡♡

Gabriel admits to being somewhat nervous of Atsushi. He’s not met a boy with so much power and potential before, but he can also see that if Atsushi is not careful it could all end very quickly for him. On the one hand, Gabriel knows that Atsushi needs to act in order to stop the wars across Yokohama, but he cannot help but worry. In their brief meeting they did get along very well, and Gabriel hopes that Atsushi will be successful in changing the world for the better. However, he is unsure of what the future has in store for the both of them.

Dazai.png

Osamu Dazai

The only person interested in knowing when he's going to die and I don't even know myself.

Bond: ❤♡♡♡♡

Aside from his own number, the only other number that Gabriel cannot see is Dazai’s - because the man’s body nullifies his ability. Gabriel doesn’t find it particularly concerning, but the fact that Dazai keeps asking him to tell him how long he has left to live or when he’s going to die does start to irritate him after a while. Gabriel doesn’t know for sure, but he can logically conclude from the way Dazai acts that something is likely to get the man killed sooner rather than later. Truthfully, Gabriel doesn’t like that as he finds the suicidal ideation to be very tasteless and Dazai’s lack of care for his own life feels selfish to Gabriel. As such, he tries to avoid the man where he can.

The Port Mafia

Mori.png

Ōgai Mori

He's where he is for a good reason - and they say he's better than what they had before him!

Bond: ❤♡♡♡♡

Gabriel and Mori have not met properly nor spoken to one another in conversation, but even just being around the man was enough to give Gabriel a scare that will last him a lifetime. Sensing the man’s power and desire to live and achieve was overwhelming - and Gabriel would like to never encounter the man a second time. He also heard of how brutally the Port Mafia put down the last of Mimic in Yokohama and suspects he may also become a target for them if he is ever discovered. As such, he’d prefer to keep his head down and stay far away.

Oda.png

Sakunosuke Oda

Lo siento... You were just trying to protect what you loved.

Bond: ❤❤❤♡♡

Thinking of Oda makes Gabriel sad. Sad for the loss of so much life for so little gain - for both the Port Mafia and for the remnants of Mimic. He knows that there was nothing he could really have done to stop any of it, but he had seen Oda’s number before the man left to confront Gide and it scared him that he knew the outcome but was powerless to change it. The memories still haunt him, and when he has a moment he does try to visit Oda’s grave in order to pay his respects to him. Gabriel hopes that nothing ever repeats the tragedy that they suffered through in the Dark Era ever again.

The Special Division for Unusual Powers

Ango.png

Ango Sakaguchi

You're gonna overwork yourself into a headache m'igo.

Bond: ❤❤❤♡♡

Gabriel and Ango have worked together on numerous occasions in negotiation and diplomacy, mostly because of Gabriel’s position as personal assistant to Cervantes. Usually they have only spoken over a video call but there have been a couple of in person strategy meetings that they have both attended as well. In general, the two get along politely and are able to have decent conversation. However it is very much a work relationship that the two men have and Gabriel would say he knows hardly anything of Ango outside of their collaboration. He’s fine with things being that way, and has little interest in prying into either Ango’s past nor his current affairs. Their mutual trust of one another is what keeps their relationship strong.

Mimic

Andre.png

André Gide

He was a good man. Was.

Bond: ❤❤❤❤♡

One of Gabriel’s biggest regrets is the fact that he knew André was going to die in his confrontation with Oda and he didn’t try harder to stop him. On the day the man died Gabriel saw his number dropping, but didn’t want to believe it was really about to happen. Though he tried to dissuade André from enacting his plans the man ignored him - and Gabriel still has nightmares over their final meeting to this day. They used to get along very well, and Gabriel respected André immensely when they worked together in Mimic as he felt he was a strong and capable leader. Admittedly he feels let down by how it all ended, but he has never told anyone of his feelings on the matter.

Hans.png

Hans Christian Andersen

I hope he's alive... He didn't deserve any of this.

Bond: ❤❤❤❤❤

In the days of Mimic, Hans and Gabriel got along very well and Gabriel considered him to be a friend. Though he knew Hans was naturally very nervous and had been through a lot, he tried to be encouraging to him and to keep him company where he could. Though he couldn’t tell him, Gabriel did take comfort in knowing that Hans’ number remained consistently high - signalling a long life for him. They became separated after the fall of Mimic though Gabriel tried to persuade Hans not to go after André, to no avail. He still has many regrets, especially as he doesn’t know if Hans is even alive anymore.

Isabel.png

Isabel Allende

You make the coffee I'll put the music on m'iga

Bond: ❤❤❤❤❤

Isabel and Gabriel are the best of friends. They get along immensely well and the shared language is a huge connecting factor between them. Often the two can be found talking and sharing coffee together every morning and afternoon, and Gabriel loves having the chance to speak Spanish with someone sane as well as with his boss. He respects Isabel highly and hopes for the best for her - and would definitely say he has become quite protective of her as a close friend. She is like a sister to him in many ways and he wouldn’t change that for the world. The other thing he appreciates is how their abilities compliment one another, and it has helped them form a strong combat partnership as well as friendship.

So I had this perfect idea si?

Maurice and Gabriel are a pair of jokers together. They get along well and often pull pranks on each other and on other members of Mimic - to the point that it could get extremely chaotic. Though they were separated by the fall of Mimic, Gabriel looks back on those memories fondly and he hopes that Maurice is still safe and is doing well. One day Gabriel hopes that they can reestablish contact with him once again and perhaps get him to join up with Cervantes as he would be a welcome addition.

Mi jefe is not the best man, but he is a man who is doing his best.

Gabriel is forever grateful to Cervantes for taking him in when he needed a safe escape, and he’s happy to keep working for him as long as he’s able to for that reason. He feels a little as if he owes it to Cervantes for all his kindness - but he has never felt forced or pressured to stay by the man’s side. Admittedly sometimes his boss can be annoying, but he is also good natured and they both share a lot of laughs when they’re together. No doubt Gabriel would happily do anything to help make Cervantes’ hopes for a better world happen, and he highly respects him for his powerful ability and strong leadership.

Jorje! I miss you!

Bond: ❤❤❤❤♡

A surprise friendship, but an absolutely great one nonetheless. Gabriel and George ended up becoming the absolute best of friends and when both worked together they were thick as thieves. Always having time for coffee together each morning and using their abilities and skills to form a strong working partnership, Gabriel had nothing but respect and admiration for his friend. They remain in contact but in secret because of George having to return to The Order of the Clock Tower, and hope that one day they can be reunited once more. It has been difficult, and Gabriel does worry because he heard of George defecting and going on the run from The Order, but he has strong faith in George.
