Smooth Lion is the result of early Valcorp testing of stolen Facility data, before proper and smooth gene alignment, the scientists of Valcorp produced a whale shark with legs. Though kept with the other moderate failures, the staff of the Facililty assumed this "companion" had no intelligence above the whale shark level, and merely had gained a set of useless limbs. Upper management and sales debated what to do with them: would there be a market for a whale shark?
Only after a second round of observation did the staff notice actual intelligence: the shark would approach and try to communicate through the tank, tapping the glass with their toes and pointing. "Smooth Lion" was nicknamed for the Twitter meme by one of the younger "keepers", but Smooth readily accepted it as her name.
