 The Species produces it´s own flow. Meaning If there is no other potential mate around, they take 2 weeks and produce alone (almost like a chicken laying eggs,) Organisms choose to reproduce asexually by different means. Some of the asexual methods are binary fission. If there is a potential mate, depending on the feelings or bond, they swap their mode to fit the mating process. (transforming female takes 3 to 4 days and will remains as long as the children are born) Arik can mate with any species. From human to other merman, his need´s swap to what is needed. The species is usually poly, since they are rare, will mate with any potential mate (to secure the safety of the species as well as scenting the good genetics to make strong and survival ones). Arik´s species will mark their potential mate to show their bond and affection. (neckbite and mark) Can happen when strong affection is taking place and the gills, fin or color of the merman turns a light purple or pink (depending un the luminescence color) If this happens, they have a deep feeling (similiar to humanlove, confessing love or showing how they feel towards the other) and will be in a "loverush"  or "matingfrenzy" moment. Their body and instincts take over from here. (hormones) If they get marked back, the bond is tighter. With more mates, spots are rare to mark. (the neck is the most markable spot (getting marked there means most love) arms, fin or other parts can get marked as well (marking looks later like a cool tattoo!)

 Is the potential mate female: His form remains male, as his watermember is located in a soft protective pouch. Mating process as any human type (well underwater) and letting nature take it´s part. Female mermaids will lay as below)

Is the potential mate male, his form will be female. Meaning Arik will lay eggs in the nest  type that the male has prepared alongside the female and through a sensual  "fishkiss" process, the male covers the eggs with his (let´s say... his seajuice sfw) and cover up with the dirt, grass or any means (covering up to not only secure but to prevent the scent from spreading and leading to other potentail partners) After 3 weeks the eggs get fertilize and already grow (eggs range from 7 to 9 per batch). And afterwards their hatching, both parents take care and teach the young ones. 2 weeks later the parents leave the offspring near the territory of their area an the young ones are left on their own. Should they return or step into territory, the parents may attack or even kill. 

Of course there have been cases under siblings when no potential mate was found, that they reproduce with each other. Thanks to genetics nothing bad will happen.

Asexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction in which the new  offspring arise from a single parent. The offsprings are identical to  each other, both physically as well as genetically. They are the exact  copies of their parent cell. Hence, they are ‘clones’. We observe asexual reproduction in both unicellular and multicellular organisms.

Modes of Asexual Reproduction

Organisms choose to reproduce asexually by different means. Some of the asexual methods are binary fission (e.g. Amoeba, bacteria), budding (e.g. Hydra), fragmentation (e.g. Planaria), spore formation (e.g. ferns) and vegetative propagation (e.g. Onion). Let us now look at the different modes of asexual reproduction in brief.

1) Fission

Fission means division. During asexual reproduction, the parent cell divides into two or more cells. Unicellular organisms show different patterns of cell division according to their cell structure. For example, an amoeba can divide itself into two at any plane but the division in euglena is longitudinal.

Fission can be of two types, namely, binary fission and multiple  fission. In binary fission, parent cell divides into two equal halves  called daughter cells. Daughter cells are identical to each other and to  their parent cell. Organisms like the amoeba, bacteria, euglena, etc.,  exhibit binary fission.

During multiple fission, organism divides itself into numerous  daughter cells. Examples of multiple fission are sporozoans and algae.

2) Fragmentation

Fragmentation is another mode of asexual reproduction. Multi-cellular  organisms like planaria, spirogyra, etc. reproduce by fragmentation.  The parent body divides into two or more fragments. Later, each fragment  develops into a new individual.

3) Regeneration

When a lizard loses its tail, it grows a new one. This is known as  regeneration. In many organisms, there are specialized cells, which can  differentiate and grow into a new organism. Organisms like hydra and  planaria also show regeneration. In these organisms, when the cell  divides into numerous pieces, each piece proliferates and differentiates  to regenerate new organisms.

4) Budding

Some organisms develop buds on their body. These buds develop into a  new individual. This is known as budding. An example is a hydra. From  the parent hydra, a bud arises which eventually matures into a new  hydra. Once it gets mature, it detaches from the parent body.

5) Vegetative Propagation

Plants reproduce asexually through their vegetative parts such as leaves, roots, stem, and buds. This is known as vegetative propagation. For example, onion bulbs, tubers of potato, runners/stolon, etc. Vegetative propagation is much faster than the sexual reproduction in plants. This can be done  artificially as well, which is widely employed in horticulture.
