Bio
Ferah's a little scatterbrained but she makes friends easily, unless they have a problem with shapeshifters. It hurts her to be called a fake but once she started shifting she hasn't been able to stop, despite the fact that she does spend the majority of her time in the form she knows best--the cat anthro. It is not merely her body/hair/clothes she can change--she could turn straw into gold if she wanted.

Her childhood was great but she's had a woeful young adulthood. She's separated from her family and wanders now, honing her skills and meeting as many different kinds of folks as she can. It's very enlightening because the cat anthros were a very xenophobic society to grow up with.

Ferah is extremely hyper and restless. She is NOT a cat-napper, more a sleep where you drop person.  It’s hard to say whether having shape-shifting abilities has a good effect on these traits or not. It lets her use up all her excess energy, and keep herself entertained, but she’s exhausting to watch. You might be walking with her to the park and not only will she change shapes multiple times, she’ll alternate between taking normal steps, long strides, running, hopping, walking on her hands, or possibly flying. She doesn’t always shift her entire body. For instance, she might change her hair into hundreds of braids with beads on them. She discovered she likes the shower of sound. Or she'll turn her hair interesting colors and shapes. She'd have such a ball in The Capital (Hunger Games).

Ferah is prone to the "curiosity killed the cat" scenario since her unrestricted inquisitiveness leads her ask all the personal questions up front and in front of other people. She is an open book, she'll tell you anything you want to know about herself. She sometimes can't distinguish between secrets and information that it is okay to reveal because if it was her she wouldn't care if everyone knew. She is extremely loyal, just very naive sometimes. She bounces back from difficulties by finding peace with things and letting them go. Being so hyperactive is a help in this because she doesn't dwell so much--she can forgive, forget, move on.She does have a short attention span but she also kind of doesn't? It depends--she can listen for hours to something that interests her but she can't just walk in a straight line or sit still for five minutes. Little things don't pass her by! But, as with most people who pay close attention to detail, the obvious things sometimes do.

 History :

CHILDHOOD / HOME TOWN
  • Ferah grew up among a society of cat anthros. She always knew they felt superior to other races and that it was even against the law to interbreed with other species. Then there were the "pedigreed" breeds of her own species who tried to keep their bloodlines pure or focused on a type of eugenics to get desirable traits if they did crossbreed. She loved her people until they betrayed her. She is so forgiving, yet she cannot condone their prejudiced, biased, cruelty to so many besides herself. Yet her childhood was full of so much happiness. Her parents had their problems at times, yet they were not the types to go to bed angry. They did leave her to her own devices A LOT so she had to entertain herself, perhaps the source of her rowdiness, yet she was also their only child so she still received a lot of love and affection when it did come.
FAMILY HISTORY / PARENTS
  • Ferah's mother was a noblewoman who became a historian. She considered it her duty to research the history of the rest of the world as well, no matter what other people thought. "Ferah, if we never see the whole picture, how can we ever understand ourselves?" She met her husband on an archaeological expedition. He was the first cat anthro anyone had heard of who did not come from their own country. Yet over the centuries they HAD exiled individuals who broke their laws...he must be related and not necessarily guilty of their crimes. No one had been exiled in several generations, after all. Then there was the fact that a noblewoman was in love with him, the match even supported by her eugenicist father. It was tolerable. But not ideal.
FAIRY TALE
  • Ferah was slightly aware of how unfairly her family was treated growing up. Yet it was never an issue until a boy her age took interest in her. His parents were so cold to her and chased him off before she knew it. That was a lot to grapple with but she wasn't in love with him, at least, and was still so young.  The next time a young man sought her out no one dared outright object. He had no parents to do so. His name was Desoto and they were truly enamored. It was like a fairy tale romance right to the end. She couldn't have been more excited for her new life.... well, maybe if her father had seemed happier about it. He said it was just because "he didn't want to lose his little girl" though. Ferah was even befriended by some other ladies (finally) and congratulated on her amazing good fortune.
IT ALL CHANGED WHEN... THE SHAPE-SHIFTING ATTACKED!
  • Ferah was given a ring by her father as an infant which he took every year on her birthday and resized so that it would always fit her. By the time she was an adult it should have been the skinniest stretched out silver band! But it was still thick and high quality. She promised him so many times that she wouldn't take it off and after the last resizing that she never ever would. But how can you keep such a promise? And why?Her wedding jewelry was gold to match her eyes. It didn't match the silver band. She took it off at the last moment, silently promising her father that she would put it back on as soon as possible. She EVEN wore it on a gold chain around her neck under the dress. But that wasn't enough. Ferah's father was on the wrong side of her to realize during the wedding that the ring was off, but he was shifty the whole ceremony. At first the wedding was going perfectly but Ferah was feeling so strange. She kept pushing aside her guilt, hoping it was just that. But it wasn't. They made their vows. They sealed their union. They were pronounced husband and wife. Cheers!!!
  • And then... Ferah swooned in Desoto's arms. She began immediately to change before his eyes. First in colors, then in form. Her transformation was such that she looked monstrous and globular at times. The only thing that remained unchanged were her eyes--filled with confusion and fear and pain.  Then they clinched shut and he dropped her and backed away. Everyone did, shouting. Except her parents. Her mother was shouting too. Her father was trying to pick her up and carry her away--but she kept slipping out of his arms or punching him as she changed. Guards came and arrested them. Ferah was watched anxiously from a distance, with weapons ready, until she stabilized.
  • The story was wrenched from her father, silver shackles were put on Ferah immediately, and her marriage was annulled. Ferah was reunited with her mother for a brief time but she never saw her father again. He was executed for his crime, the worst their culture had ever known. Soon her mother was incarcerated permanently and Ferah was exiled since no other judgment was unanimously agreed upon. Fortunately for her it seemed apparent that she never knew. For one thing, some of her species (I.e. some of the judges) can sense emotions. So they could tell.
  • She did see Desoto once in secret. He had to have answers and he knew her to be restricted to her familiar form now. His conflict and disgust were apparent the entire time and they were permanently detached already. In the end he bypassed anger and went straight to acceptance. He left her with an expression of his pity but not any remorse about the life he'd lost with her, he seemed relieved instead. It was all so heinous. A girl, a victim, abandoned by everyone she knew. The only two people who truly unconditionally loved her taken away forever. She didn't even have a religion to sustain her. She could've gone mad in the wilderness. Perhaps she DID go mad... she took off her silver band, wanting to lose herself again.
  • Eventually the powers stabilized. She spent time as many different animals living as they did--so instinctively. It gave her a kind of peace. Her curiosity bloomed. And then came so much WONDER. Once she knew the forest and its creatures she grew back into herself and soon after found her way back to civilization. She thought she would stay in the new town forever, there was so much to learn! But they had a problem with shapeshifters. It was sad but her resilience had grown. Now she wanders, NOT looking for a new home--just exploring. She has yet to realize that home can be people, not just a place.
RECENT PAST
  • Eventually Ferah awakened a power of telepathy. It also hit her like a deluge, having been all dammed up, and knocked her into a coma. She did not dream or progress her ability, her brain protected itself with silence. But another person with telepathy was eventually able to bring her into a dream state where they could interact. They practiced building walls to block other minds, copying the one that had blocked her telepathy in the first place but no longer damming the ability ITSELF back up. Then finally she was able to reawaken safely. This whole ordeal stole TWO YEARS of her life. And it wasn't over! She had to remain for a while to regain her physical strength and develop mental strength as well. She never learned meditation, being too hyper. She would fall asleep instead, but that was part of recovery too. Until that period of her life she'd never tried to shapeshift objects so she began to. She made gold with which to pay the people that had helped her. Once she moved on to changing all sorts of other things on the property into richer versions of themselves she was kindly kicked out. "You'll have us arrested for theft! We don't need such fine things. You're all better, go and see the world. You know how to handle yourself now. But come back and visit!"

 powers :

Sensing Emotions:
  • An ability she's always had but didn't think much of. It's an extra sense like touch or smell. She gets it wrong sometimes and it's not something that is always "on" either.
Telepathy:
  • The first time she experienced this she went into a coma. Once she learned to put up mental blocks she recovered. It's not an ability she ever wanted to have. Plus, it makes keeping secrets even harder than it used to be.
Cat-Based:
  • her personality (curious, keep to herself but affectionate with people she likes)
  • Flexibility, litheness, agility, balance, enhanced vision (see further and in the dark), enhanced smell, acute hearing (sensitive ears), stealth
Shape-Shifting:
  • Herself: it helps to study other forms closely before attempting this. She purposely never changes her eyes. She doesn't impersonate specific people but potentially could.
  • Other people: she’s never tried to shape-shift another person, she wouldn't want to damage them
  • Objects: As a rule of thumb, she can’t turn a simple object into something complex, unless she does it in steps, and the objects should usually resemble each other. She can take animal skin and change it into leather, she can take an apple and turn it into an orange, she can take hard bread and turn it into soft white bread, coal into a diamond (though that's pretty difficult), straw to gold (gold sticks at least), liquid to solid or gas, etc.
