Akito Hasegawa

Akito is the second eldest of five children. He has a difficult family life, with his seventeen year old brother constantly acting out and his parents always working. Akito functions as the oldest sibling in the family, taking care of his younger siblings. His parents forgive his brother for everything he does, even as his actions turn from staying out too late and getting into trouble at school to stealing money from the family and scaring his siblings. Akito’s parents do not pay him much attention, with the only praise he receives being for how “mature” he is, a word that makes him wince. The phantom thieves notice him following them around after their first case. Not long after their third, Akito approaches them and pleads for their help. He explains that his older brother has physically threatened his younger siblings unless they help him make money in clearly illegal ways. As he begs for the phantom thieves’ help, he looks nothing like the mature young man his parents praise him for being. He is shaking like the scared child he is, who feels powerless in this world. The phantom thieves agree, though they have no intention of letting Akito go to the palace with them. Akito follows them in anyway, and in it sees the shadow of his brother, as well as the cognitive version of himself. Seeing that his brother sees him as nothing more than a tool, Akito feels rage on his own behalf for the first time in his thirteen years of life. However, it is not until he sees the cognitive versions of his younger siblings that something in him snaps. Gavroche calls out to him, bidding him to shed the mask of the mature, perfect sibling and awaken to the spirit of revolution inside him. Akito gains his persona and joins the phantom thieves!
