  • Her horns continuously grow and can very in length

Personality

Mavis is highly independent and strong of will, though reclusive due to her condition and distrust of most adults and teenagers as many have dehumanized and mercilessly bullied her throughout her life. Mavis's distrust of strangers hinder her ability to accept offered shelter or a meal from gracious individuals as well as to make friends. While she feels that society has turned her into the outcast that she is and stigmatized her as evil, she does not harbor any ill feelings towards individuals who do not deserve it. On very rare occasions, she even shows kindness to others in small acts. Mavis has a torn opinion on nature. The lack of company, other than the squawking crows that mock her, makes her feel that it symbolizes her loneliness. On the other hand, it also provides solace and protection when she is chased back into the fields.

Trivia
  • Mavis's cape was given to her by one of the senior carnies from the carnival she had worked at previously. The elderly woman had acted as a grandmotherly and even a motherly role towards her, and wanted to give her the old thing as a parting gift, so she would at least have something to help protect her from the cold.
  • The crows that fly around Mavis rarely interact with her. They prefer to watch her from a distance in trees or flying overhead.
  • There is always at least two or more crows surrounding her. The typical number is usually several, except during the night when large numbers congregate to roost
  • Mavis has always loved sunflowers, even when they became apart of her nickname. She enjoys putting them in her hair to make herself feel better about her appearance.
  • Mavis is overall very self conscious about her appearance. Besides putting sunflowers in her hair, she also prefers to wear her cape whenever possible to hide the fact she's underweight. The cape also gives her a sense of security.
  • During her years in the carnival she sent her mother a monthly letter telling of how she was doing. As years went by, the letters became less frequent as Mavis felt more relaxed in her surroundings, until they eventually stopped altogether. Two days before leaving the carnival behind, she sent her mother one last letter.
  • She's nervous of the sight of blood [on herself], not because she has a phobia of it, but because she's not equipped to handle anything bigger than very minor wounds such as scratches (i.e doesn't have anything to bandage wounds with, antiseptic, etc.)
  • When in a desperate enough need, Mavis will resort to stealing from travelers while they rest at night or while their items are unattended. She will only take things that she needs, such as clothes and food. Rarely does she take money because of her horns and the crows making it nearly impossible to walk into public places.

History

Since she was young, Mavis always had a strange affiliation with the supernatural that she could never quite comprehend. Feelings of unease loomed over her, senses of being watched when knowing she was alone, and how no matter where she was, crows always seemed to follow her. Growing up in a conservative and superstitious southern town, this would increasingly grow against her as she aged. Children teased her for the odd behaviors animals had around her along with how she would become spooked by nothing and adults avoided her, unable to stand being near the aura she gave off. Her mother was also suspected of being a witch, which made an already alienated Mavis even more of an outcast among the townsfolk. When she turned fourteen, another anomaly afflicted Mavis; horns. It was at this time her mother knew that Mavis was no longer safe and had be relocated to somewhere safer. So after several months of keeping a close eye on her daughter and desperately trying to hide her horns-buying her hats to wear over them, limiting the amount of time she spent outdoors, and swiftly intervening in conflicts caused by the neighborhood children- her mother gave Mavis over to a carnival that was run by one of Mavis's older cousins. Even though it pained her mother to part with her only child, she knew Mavis would be safer among carnies.

For a good portion of her life, Mavis lived among the carnival and its workers. There she went by “Mavis- Mystic of the Otherworlds.” Her act focused on conjuring creatures from different plains of existence along with the natural unease she brought. Even though she had come to know the carnival as a second home to her and had grown close to many of the other carnies, she could never enjoy having to put herself on display for the marks' (customers considered easy money) amusements. There was also concern for her own safety that put Mavis on edge. Sometimes teenagers or drunk townsfolk would come into the camps during the evening and nighttime and try to assault one of the carnies. One day after saying her goodbyes to her friends and cousin, she left the carnival behind to set out on her own. She knew that with her condition the task would be a challenging one, and it did prove to be so.

Mavis now lives her life out as a vagabond- wandering through fields and farmland during the day to avoid ridicule of the public eye and in the open during the night. Mavis does her best to stay close to nearby towns as possible without being seen in order to acquire supplies for survival, yet more often than not she is forced to move deeper into the fields by unwelcoming townsfolk. This has earned her the title of “The Sunflower Witch” or “The Field Witch” since most fields and hills grow sunflowers. Blame is also placed upon her for occurrences such as sudden deaths, disappearances, mass death of livestock, etc. With so many failed attempts to reform back into society or to even be close to it, the fields have become a permanent residence to Mavis. Even though she knows she has little hope of ever catching up with the carnival again, and possibly even finding her own mother, Mavis can't help but wonder what it would have been like if she had stayed with either of them instead of living in crippling poverty and isolation.
