I just want to be lucky...
― Shui Xian

Shui Xian is a Lucky Cricket themed Fairy Vial owned by BrownieBFF or Brownie-Bunny. She is known for her constant search for good fortune after her traumatic experience regarding her lack of luck.

Appearance

Shui is a young 14-15-year-old teenager standing at a height of 145 centimetres. She has shoulder-length black hair that she ties up in a high and tight ponytail. Her eyes are of a rich brown colour and she has a medium skin tone. Two angular cricket antennae adorn her head and a pair of cricket wings can be found on her back, albeit hidden by her Vial, which is a glass exoskeleton with pale, white daffodil petals inside.

She often wears a red, loose qipao shirt that is salmon at the collar with a yellow gradient at the sleeves and end, embroidered with white flower patterns, and a matching pair of shorts. Yellow bead bracelets adorn her hands with one having a dice charm and the other having an eye charm, both symbolising luck. A white cloak drapes around her shoulders, fading from a white into a salmon red at the end with white swirls. When out in the town of Cherrium, she wears her hood up, concealing her antennae. She wears red sneakers with white stripes and shoelaces.

When it is down, Shui’s hair usually sticks up at the fringe, similar to that of JaidenAnimations.

Personality

Due to her extreme isolation, she is unaware of current trends and expressions. Her lack of social interactions cause her to only rely on media she has consumed. Thus, she will throw in random references to TV shows in her speech as she is not used to hearing others speak ‘normally’. With her countless hours spent on playing video games and watching TV shows, she has become an expert in both. She also enjoys doodling and singing to herself.

Contrary to what most may believe, Shui is actually quite intelligent. For the 3 years she has been isolated from society, she has grown an interest in videos that analyse things such as TV shows. Thus, she has a versatile way of thinking and always thinks outside the box. She also took a lot of time alone, which allowed her to appreciate the small details and little things in life.

However, due to her extreme lack of social interaction, Shui can be quite blunt and offensive without realising it. She also can overreact like how characters in cartoons do as she hasn’t experienced dealing with real people’s emotions in a long time. She was isolated during her growing years, aged 12-15, which is when most people start maturing and changing, when their experiences have the greatest impact on them as they shape the person’s future and personality.

She appears closed-off and quiet to strangers, however, she is outspoken and lively around those she is close to. She loves to make snide remarks about others as it helps her cope with her anxiety by pointing out others’ flaws. She knows this is wrong but her anxiety clouds her logical reasoning. However, when asked to stop, she will indeed stop.

Despite her rude demeanour, she does genuinely care for her friends. She would be devastated if one of them were to get hurt, although she hides it, and believes that they deserve to do something better than just hang around her. She has trust issues due to the severe bullying and so has a hard time breaking out of her shell. She starts out as closed-off, then snide, then it takes a really close friend to convince her to tell them about her problems.

Despite her closed-off and shy demeanour towards strangers, she will stand up and fight against those who she thinks are committing wrongdoing. Although however brave she might seem, she is actually trembling inside with nervousness and fear. However, her sense of justice and righteousness, along with her desire to fix her past mistakes, overtakes her fear and allows her to be strong.

Shui does not view herself as worthy of love and attention, instead, she believes that she does not deserve all the friends she has. She will often get confused when one of her friends show up at her house to hang out or give her presents. She will try her hardest to return their gift back but to no avail.

History

Awakening

When Shui first awakened, she landed in a field of daffodils. Locals and travellers who gathered near the field noticed the young girl lying down on the patch of flowers. They were overjoyed to have another Fairy Vial to call their friend when Shui suddenly started gasping for breath. She had a breathing difficulty, rumoured to be caused by the pollen around her, and was struggling to breathe as a result. Vials around her were startled and scared because a Vial’s awakening should be beautiful and wonderful, and here this Vial is, almost at the verge of death. They wondered if she was indeed a Vial or a trick from the Hunters. Suddenly, her gasping slowed down and eventually stopped. She could breathe! The Vials viewed this as a an extremely fortunate outcome  that came from a great miracle and thus earned her the nickname ‘Lucky’. However, she was still without a name, so the Vials went up to her and asked her what her name was. They were surprised to hear that she did not know because most Vials are awakened knowing their name and specialty. ‘Did the creator not name her?’ They wondered, ‘What a strange Vial...’ They decided to give her the benefit of the doubt as they believed her presence might bring them luck and good fortune. They described her as having ‘bloomed’ back like a beautiful flower after her terrible breathing problem and thus named her Shui Xian after the flowers that surrounded her. From that day onwards, Shui tries her best to avoid any flowers, much to Xian’s disappointment.

Shui later gained the surname ‘Wang’ after the corn she grew. Those who consumed it described it as being ‘fit for a king’ and referred to it as ‘Royal Corn’.

BACKSTORY

Due to Cherrium being overflowed with all types of colourful flowers, Shui decided to not live inside the main town area and instead picked a field that was still near to the town but far enough that the pollen would not reach her. However, she does visit the town to buy things like clothes and animal products such as eggs.

For many years, Shui lived like this; Living a bit far off from the main town and hanging around in town during the day. Despite her peculiar and, surprisingly, unknown residence, she made quite a handful of friendships. The rumour of her giving good fortune was not quite as well-known yet, however, there were enough people who knew of the rumour that Shui started to develop quite the ego. It only grew as more and more Vials started hanging around her, desperate to get a bit of fortune to themselves.

However, that fortune never came. Vials were perplexed over the fact that their risky endeavours never seemed to work despite being ‘blessed’ by Shui. They would question her luck-giving powers and confront her multiple times. Every time they would, Shui would blame her young age and immaturity for her lack of fortune and would always assure them that once she finally matures, those who have hung around her ever since her early years would receive the most fortune. The forgiving, kind and generous Cherrium locals believed her and thus hung around the arrogant Vial.

When Shui turned the age of 10, she noticed some peculiar objects poking out of her head. After a few months, it became apparent that they were growing longer and that Shui was growing antennae! Another few more months revealed that it was, in fact, cricket antennae! Everyone viewed this as a sign that she was finally starting to mature and that they will soon gain good fortune. Even Shui believed this, who had been lying to cover up her uncertainty of her ability to give out fortune to others. The locals started feeding her free food, giving her free clothes and helping her with her farming, all in an effort to get more luck out of her.

2 years later, her antennae had finally fully matured, right in time for a Cherrium festival, in fact! The festival held many competitions and many looked to Shui for good luck. Vials raced to get her blessing first and all those whom did not receive it were absolutely certain that they would lose. The festival started and the blessed were bragging to the other Vials about how they were going to win. Once Shui entered the town, the locals flocked around her, praising her and thanking her for her given fortune.

This only boosted her ego more, which was already quite big to begin with. In fact, on that very day, she wore the most elaborate Cheongsam out of all of the Cherrium locals. On the top of head lied a giant Chinese-styled tiara and she wore many gold accessories. She put her hair in a loose ponytail and had her bangs covering a quarter of her face.

She strutted through the town, head up high and chest puffed out, an obvious indicator that she felt pride and joy over her grand title. She was joined by her crowd of praising Vials who followed her everywhere she went.

There was one thing about her antennae that really sold the Vials the idea that she was a luck-bringer. Normally, crickets have straight antennae that do not bend. However, Shui’s antennae grew to be angular and bend. The only cricket antennae that are like this are the ones of golden, Chinese, ‘lucky cricket’ statues, thus, she was perceived as a ‘lucky’ cricket rather than a regular one.

The festival started and with cheer, the blessed Vials competed in the competitions, one by one. Some barely even tried winning, believing that Shui’s blessing will ensure their victory under any circumstances. Others tried their hardest as they believed that luck will only work with those who worked hard. After all the competitions had ended, the results were then announced.

Shui’s mouth dropped when the results were announced. Every single Vial that she had blessed had won last place, despite some trying their absolute hardest. She felt her heart sink into her shoes as all the Vials turned towards her, a fuming look in their eyes.

“HOW DARE YOU DECEIVE US WITH THE LIE THAT YOU BRING GOOD LUCK!”

“ALL YOU BROUGHT WAS MISFORTUNE!”

“YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR YOUR ACTIONS!”

The overwhelming shock, the embarrassment and shame drove her to run away in tears, all the way back to her little hut, where nobody could ever find her ever again.

She now comes to town only for the necessities and wears a hood to conceal her antennae, which, according to her, feels very uncomfortable. When she isn’t buying products in town, Shui locks herself in her house for the entire day, eating her home-grown vegetables and playing her video games, or ‘videos game’, as she calls it.

Shui met Xian whilst at a lemonade stand. She stopped Xian from being scammed from by the deceitful man running the stand. Xian was grateful and asked Shui who she was, to which she ignored at first until Xian eventually persuaded her to answer. After learning about Shui’s past, Xian felt so much pity for the poor Vial that she offered to be her friend. After a long session of persuading, Shui finally caved in and agreed for them to become friends.

Xian was the first friend of Shui and is thus one of the closest people to her. She helped Shui become confident of herself again by offering to teach her how to use her magic. She is one of the few Vials who tolerates Shui’s snide remarks and teasing, instead laughing them off with a kind smile. However, due to Xian’s naivety, Shui usually has to constantly remind her to be cautious and wary and often helps her avoid scams and deceit. Shui also helps her with baking, a skill that Xian lacks, despite her baking skills being more decent than excellent.

Serendipity

She hangs around me pretty often and is a pretty close friend! She helps me get good luck, though, I doubt it’ll work. Still, she tries and I appreciate that. Serendipity, you’re pretty rad!

They met.

Being another luck-based Vial, Serendipity desires to help Shui acquire good fortune. Despite Shui’s doubts, Serendipity’s luck magic does indeed bring Shui good fortune. This is because Shui does not have a curse of bad luck, instead, she has a lack of luck. Therefore, she is not immune to Serendipity’s luck magic and will become extremely fortunate whenever in her vicinity. However, due to Shui undervaluing herself, she often asks Serendipity to disable her luck magic, much to her disappointment. Despite this, they still remain close friends.
