Douglas is the eldest son to two wealthy parents, both of whom came from old money. For his entire life, he has grown up upper-class. He is practically the poster-boy of rich white kids - at least when it comes to his presentation - but he doesn't let his privilege spoil his demeanor. Douglas is as gregarious and generous as they come, almost a bit naively so. Having been born into a life of mansions, polo ponies, racehorses, banquets, and butlers, he can sometimes struggle to grasp just how different his life is from others. Regardless, he is happy to share his life with any and all of his friends.

His bright, social disposition is just bright enough to mask just how much he is hurting on the inside. Nearly everyone is fooled. How could someone like him hate his life? He hates both himself and his family and chooses to let that resentment fester rather than seek help from loved ones - or even professionals. Instead, alcoholism and countless surface-level (often sexual or otherwise physical) relationships are satisfactory coping mechanisms for Douglas Crawford. Even the closest of Douglas's friends are none the wiser; if it were up to him, they would never see behind the mask.

Douglas is a people-pleaser to his core. All of his relationships are almost like trophies to him; although he does see them as more than that (usually), they're still examples of people who want to be around him; they are proof that he is wanted. Whether that be for his body, his parties -- whatever -- he doesn't really care as long as he's liked. Deep down, the pressure of his own self-hatred and self-consciousness is overwhelming. He uses his reliance on alcohol and his relationships with others to constantly distract himself from looking inward and paying more attention to himself longer than he has to.

Like many "stereotypical rich kids", Douglas has a terrible relationship with his parents, both of whom are responsible for how he turned out. His mother, while caring -- and only "nurturing" in the ways to keep him alive (and yet the butlers and nannies still did most of the day-to-day work) , was still complicit and dismissive of his father's abusive behavior. Keeping it a "family secret" was better for their image than doing anything constructive about it. Besides, speaking up would only turn the abuse to her, so she preferred to deflect instead. His father was never satisfied. He was never proud, never accepting, never supportive of anything his sons did, though it seemed he was particularly critical of Douglas. As a child, all he ever wanted was to make his dad proud -- to even have him smile in his presence -- but that never happened. The only "prize" he ever received from his father was the deep scar on his lip, torn at 14, which was the quick result of speaking back against his elder after his pent up frustrations boiled to the surface. Although he fears his father, the thing Douglas wants above anything else is for his father to look at him like a son.
