Vanilla came from a hidden village of flower demons, a special demon race with flower related powers, who lived together within a lush meadow in the land of Olrichula. Born from orchid parents, Vanilla was raised to be somewhat sheltered and distant, due to his low flower energy potential from his tiny nub horns and inexperienced skill in singing and dance. This nature only further hindered his skills while growing. Until one day he noticed a flower demon with a small single horn practicing his skills with another with two much longer, twisted horns. This inspired Vanilla to hone his own skills, and he would practice in secret until he felt ready to prove himself to others.

One day when Vanilla was around age 12, practicing alone in the forest as usual, a demon they didn’t recognize appeared. The demon made note of how despite their lack of potential, Vanilla continued practicing beyond their capabilities. He introduced himself as Daisuga, and offered to take Vanilla under his guidance to exceed his own expectations. Vanilla was eager, but questioned the other’s intentions. Daisuga reveals that him and some allies under a leader are trying to save flower demon’s, as they suspect the shadows to soon overrun Olrichula. But it’s become difficult to locate the hidden village and fear they may run out of time. Vanilla offers to reveal the location so Daisuga and his allies can save the village, in exchange for keeping his word and training him past his potential. Daisuga agrees, and Vanilla departs with him to his home base.

A year after Vanilla’s disappearance, Olrichula became suddenly invaded by shadow monsters as predicted. Which led to the discovery of the flower demon village, and forced them to flee into hiding.
Vanilla is told by Daisuga that his ally Zentetsuken saw that most of the villagers fled to safety, while a few’s whereabouts remain unknown. Vanilla feels bad there was nothing he could do to help despite the great progress he’s made, but Daisuga assures them that Zen was able to save a young flower demon who had stayed behind to fend the shadows off, and would be Zen’s apprentice since he saw the same potential in them that Daisuga saw in Vanilla. When asked who the flower demon was, Vanilla realizes it’s the same flower demon with the single horn who had inspired him long ago, Lavandula.
