Akumu Tamashii, dubbed as Night Terror by several heroes, is a villain affiliated with the League of Villains and was part of the Vanguard Action Squad. She and the rest of her team serve as the main antagonists of the Forest Training Camp Arc. Later on, her organization and the Meta Liberation Army merged into the Paranormal Liberation Front, where she became a warrior for the front.

Appearance

Akumu is a short, underweight woman with dark circles under her dull, red eyes. She has black hair that goes just below her shoulders and it's often seen somewhat unkempt or in her face. She tends to look very tired and has a habit of slouching. She has no prominent feature and doesn't often stand out in a crowd.

She is often seen wearing a dull green hoodie several times too big for her with ripped black leggings and finished off with a pair of simple black sneakers. Underneath her clothes, it has been revealed that she often sports bruises or cuts from Somnus' abuse.

When she joins the Vanguard Action Squad, her villian outfit is updated to a full black ensamble. She wears a tank top and jean shorts with a cloak like jacket covering it, as well as flat footed boots since she struggles wearing heels.

Personality

Akumu appears to be cold, apathetic and almost cruel to almost everyone that meets her. It's greatly demonstrated through the use of her quirk against Izuku Midoriya, as she shows very little concern towards the student. In reality, she is a highly paranoid individual, scared of showing any emotion as Somnus takes great pleasure in her reactions.

Underneath the paranoia, Akumu is a person who truly craves closeness with others and has even shown that she cares deeply for both her family, and those that manage to get past her cold exterior. Although getting past that exterior is difficult as she often reacts violently towards those that try.

Abilities

Overall Abilities: Akumu has shown a lack of skill in close quarters combat but great control over her quirk, being best suited to long distance combat as well as support. The paralysis part of her quirk makes it easy for her to avoid physical altercations.

Quirk

Sleep Paralysis: Akumu is host to a sentient, skeletal being named Somnus. He is not visible to anyone other than Akumu, at least until the second half of her quirk is activated. When activated, she has the ability to paralyze others by just seeing them. While paralyzed, the victim is able to see Somnus and he takes advantage of this by twisting his being into any number of eldritch horrors. The entire experience is similar to that of sleep paralysis for the victim, like the name suggests. She can only paralyze one target at a time safely, as trying to do more takes a lot of her already low energy reserves.

It's been shown that while growing up, Akumu was unaware of the paralysis half of her quirk and was often accused of making up imaginary friends. Despite Somnus being incredibly abusive towards her, people just blamed the bruises and marks on her 'clumsiness'. Somnus is still abusive towards her but has shown a parasitic like care for her, not hesitating to kill to keep his host safe.

Although rare, Somnus has the ability to 'possess' Akumu, fusing their appearances and giving him control of her body. This possession has been shown to both be painful for Akumu and incredibly dangerous for others around the pair since Somnus is given a completely physical form and use of the paralysis.

Trivia:

• Her name is composed of the kanji for "soul" (魂), "evil" (悪), and "dream" (夢). These point back to both Somnus and her quirk.
  • Her given name comes from the japanese for "nightmare"
• Originally, the conept for Akumu and Somnus was simpler as Somnus didn't exist. Akumu could cause paralysis and hallucinations.
  • This version of Akumu was a lot different in personality and appearance as well. More ethereal and timid.
• Somnus' design is based off of Boris Groh's shadowy, skeletal figures.
