Evander is an intense and fiercely loyal guardian. The hatred he has towards humans for the destruction of his kind, and other beastly kin drives him to fight without pause or doubt. He is equal parts brutal and kind. Contrary to what people assume about him and other Protectors, he is a highly intelligent and strategic individual. He weighs his actions carefully, and he dedicates himself fully to the service of his people.

In this world, humans have hidden themselves away within fortresses, and have built their civilizations behind great stone walls to keep the outside world from getting in. They war against the beasts who live on the outside, and fight them for territory and honor. Evander belongs to a clan of highly intelligent beasts who have been driven deep into the unforgiving lands, holding onto what little resources that they have to survive.

They have much simpler, and more spiritual lives, and dedicate their time to preserving the stories of their people, as well as their knowledge of nature and medicine. They try to keep to themselves, but the humans often try to bring destruction to their homes and their people. Most of their kind has died out as a result of it, but Evander's clan has turned to violence to preserve their legacy for as long as they can.

Evander is a Protector, one of the many of his clan who dedicates themselves to warring against the human driven violence. He grew up, wanting to be a healer like his mothers, but after witnessing the deaths of people close to him, he realized that healers can't do anything to prevent or stop the destruction from happening. So he took a vow to serve as a Protector. He follows a strict ethical code, and has given up most of his selfish and worldly desires and possessions in order to serve his purpose.

He has a strong connection to his family and his friends, but he is never quite able to spend time with them, or start a family of his own because of his vows. Sometimes he wishes he had chosen otherwise, but ever time he saves a friend who has been kidnapped by humans, or stops an invasion, he is reminded of the importance of his position.
