Yancy Stuff

Of the two brothers, Yancy is described as the "natural" Jaeger pilot. He was generally considered to be better at many things than Raleigh. Despite this, he shares a strong bond with his younger brother and the resulting relationship makes them drift compatible despite the lack of a pedigree. Yancy is willing take chances in situations where he believes brother is slow to act. Their shared interest in a particular person or thing tends creates friction between the two, Yancy frustrated by catering to his brother.

Yancy and Raleigh shared a relatively close relationship with their younger sister, Jazmine. Memories from Yancy's Drift with Raleigh reveal that Yancy and Raleigh did many things together as children growing up. They were particularity fond of playing monkey in the middle with Jazmine.

Even headed, Yancy is willing to follow the orders of his authority figures at the same time he is willing to disobey them if he agrees with his brother in regard to battle strategies. Yancy is not immune to the rise to fame shared by Raleigh during the height of the Jaeger Program; both ultimately underestimate Knifehead’s strength. Their inability to adapt to the situation and follow orders costs him his life.

According to the novelization, when the Beckets visit Budapest, Yancy is eleven years old and celebrating his birthday. However, Drift Space states that Raleigh was ten when he helped his brother create his superhero costume in Budapest. Yancy would be thirteen years old at the time.

According to Drift Space, Yancy is fan of comic books and wanted to be a superhero as a child.

Raleigh Stuff

Six years into the Kaiju War, Raleigh and Yancy's victories against the Kaiju make the youngest Becket cocky and overly self-assured in his abilities as a Ranger. Raleigh shares a close bond with his older brother Yancy, despite the latter being generally acknowledged (even by Raleigh himself) as the more naturally-talented pilot of the two. When his brother is killed, experiencing his death at the hands of Knifehead rattles him; the emotional loss leaves Raleigh broken, humbled and without the more stable reference point Yancy served as all those years.

Raleigh continues to admire the fighting spirit in humanity, but "hates" people. He is at his happiest when he is left alone. Raleigh is willing to help others at the expense of his own advantage in battle situations. After Yancy's death, Charlie Hunnam suggests that Raleigh prefers to be left alone to himself. Additionally, Raleigh becomes an insomniac and tends to avoid sodas and coffee as a result. A wiser man, Raleigh returns to the Kaiju War ready to put ego aside and help what remains of the PPDC. Travis Beacham cites that Raleigh's characterization is designed to work against the "Chosen One" archetype popularized by characters like Luke Skywalker. Raleigh's choice to return the war is not "driven by fate", but his ability as a experienced pilot.

Although considered reckless and impatient, Raleigh possess a considerable tolerance for mental strain, as shown when he piloted Gipsy Danger alone to safety after a Knifehead attack. Herc, pilot of Striker Eureka, states that only one other pilot has managed to do that. His friendship with Mako and her determination to become a Ranger helps him to move on from his brother's death, encouraging her to fight for what she wants. Despite their rocky start, the two eventually come to share a great amount of respect for each other.

According to Pacific Rim: Man, Machines & Monsters, Raleigh has no next of kin after Yancy dies. The novelization cites that Yancy and Raleigh's parents died some time during the Kaiju War, but lists their sister Jazmine among Raleigh's surviving kin. In the Drift Space featurette, their uncle Charles and sister Jazmine Becket are among the his next of kin.

Positives: Loyal, brave, resourceful, honest, hard working, earnest, generous, compassionate, trustworthy, committed, thrill sleeker.
Negatives: Impulsive, foolhardy, vulnerable, withdrawn, hard-headed.
Secret Dreams: To lead, to save, to rescue those in need.
Most Happy If: Alone, listening to music or sitting by himself on a park bench just people watching
Heroes: Winston Churchill, Paul McCartney, Bruce Lee, Moe, Neil Armstrong, Jaques Costeau, Dennis Leary, his uncle Charles Becket, and his own mother, Dominique Lapierre-Becket

Raleigh keeps hard candies in his pockets and chews them when he's nervous.

Raleigh is a World War II enthusiast.

According to the novelization, Raleigh was responsible for naming Gipsy Danger.

Mako Stuff

Not unlike Pentecost, Mako is haunted by the loss her family. Consciously or unconsciously, she dresses in blues and gray colors, which harken back to what she wore as a child and the state of Tokyo during Onibaba's attack. The blue streaks in the front of her hair also represent the lingering trauma of the memory of the attack. del Toro states the red shoe she loss in the confusion is "a symbolic object that represents her heart".

Mako is a perfectionist, seeking to get anything she puts her mind right. del Toro describes Mako as "her own worst enemy" and "crucial adversary"; Mako dislikes nothing more than to fail herself and others around her. Short tempered, Mako socialized very little with others and has no friends. This is particularly heightened by her desire fulfill her "life debt" to Pentecost and prove her worth as a Ranger to her adoptive father, who assumes the trauma of her experience in Tokyo is too severe and will hinder her. Her open desire for revenge against the Kaiju for killing her mother and father is enough to prevent her from piloting a Jaeger.

Though Mako is still marred by loss, she eventually creates another family just as dear to her with Pentecost, the Wei Tang Brothers and the Kaidonovsky couple. The moment she granted the opportunity to take her revenge against the Kaiju, she not only avenges Sumako and Masao, but the pilots of Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha.

Additionally, the relationship she eventually forms with Raleigh Becket is offset by the character's personal colors (brown, amber and green) which are representative of a possibility of a life beyond the Kaiju and the war once she is saved by Raleigh before he detonates Gipsy Danger and the breach is destroyed. Mako learns to trust again beyond the pentameters of her close knit family when she and Raleigh become partners. Mako takes great pride in her abilities to repair electronics and is at her happiest when she is repairing engines.

Pentecost trained Mako in hand-to-hand and close quarters combat from an early age, passing on all his fighting skills to her. She became a master in multiple disciplines, with her skills rivaling those of Becket. Mako personally hand-picked all of Raleigh's potential Drift partners, before a sparring session with him revealed that she was in fact the strongest candidate herself.

Positives: Resilient, strong, respectful, brave, reverent, resourceful, trustworthy, single-minded, methodic, disciplined, organized, clean, loyal, pure
Negatives: Stubborn, demanding, rigid, cloistered, intolerant, introverted, hermetic, dogmatic, lonely
Secret Dreams: That her destiny is greater than her circumstance
Most Happy If: Repairing an engine or seeing an engine repaired
Present Love Interest: Training, Raleigh Becket
Heroes: Kitano, Stacker Pentecost aka "Sensei"

Mako and Tamsin are were said to be like "sisters" according to Travis Beacham.
