Description of Blessings: Coprinus comatus, or the shaggy ink cap is a common fungus often seen growing on lawns, along gravel roads and waste areas. The young fruit bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out. The caps are white, and covered with scales. The gills are white but turn pinkish with age, eventually turning black. This species is edible, beautiful, and has a method of spore dispersal that seems like it's right out of a science fiction movie: it releases a black liquid that is laden with spores; as it matures, it will deliquesce, meaning it will appear to melt away until only the stem is left. Coprinus comatus is classified as a saprophyte, which means it feeds on dead and dying organic matter..
