Noctis very much lives up to the saying "fake it till you make it," hardly ever letting his true feelings break the facade he's so carefully built over the years. When his bottled emotions do break free, it's usually in the form of an angry outburst, whether it be something as small as yelling to something as large as physical violence. However, he is capable of showing genuine care and concern when it matters to those he truly cares about. Noctis may behave indifferent to those around him, but there are some people in his life he truly cares for, and will do anything for, no matter how much he may deny his feelings.
This care is mostly seen when involving his childhood friends Asa and Nadia, and the children he teaches.
For anyone else, his facade stays firmly in place, and he comes across as charming, dramatic, and kind of an asshole. Which is just the way he likes it.
Noctis also likes to stand out, always having a flair for the dramatic. However, it's not entirely true to his self. While he does like to stand out, he simultaneously hates the attention, and it only makes him more likely to put on an act for everyone. As charismatic as he may be, Noctis is a private person, and tends to divert any attention away from himself with jokes and lies.
In actuality, Noctis is... pretty messed up inside. He harbours a lot of bitteness and anger, and is also pretty paranoid due to growing up in the poor part of his realm where killing and kidnapping was the norm. He doesn't trust easily, and tends to push people away to prevent himself from getting hurt, keeping himself a healthy distance from even the people he grew up with, and the person he cares so deeply about.
Noctis grew up a street urchin with a penchant for stealing and fighting, and though he tried his best to obey the law while taking on a job as a teacher, old habits die hard and his resentment for the leaders of society has taken hold once again. Though he once feared losing his job as a teacher, he's come to realize there are more important things than protecting a title--he'd always be a teacher to his kids and the community. Instead, it is more important to protect them at any costs. What's a little stealing from gods and killing cultists when your home and everyone you care about are in danger?
Wants to help guide future generations and show them they can move up in life and achieve their dreams despite their humble and broken origins.
Strengths: He's passionate, charming, and insightful. Knows what he wants and isn't afraid to get it. Very good at manipulation.
Weaknesses: Paranoid and distrusting, often pushing people away. His emotions often burst out as distruptful angry outburts.
Tends to be dramatic in everything he does, a little twitchy
Drinks. Social smoker.
Losing someone he cares about.
Deep water/Drowning.
Nearly kidnapped as a child // led to paranoia/distrust
Neglectful parents // not close with family
Friends kidnapped/killed // helped with paranoia, led to fear of losing people and his cold persona
Nearly drowned // refuses to get into bodies of water
The Shadow nightmares/torture // fuels his guilt, reminds him how terrible he is. fuels his fear of drowning. he's become averse to mirrors.
Early Life
Current
After Noctis finds himself involved in things he never thought he would, Asa gets hurt trying to keep him away from the danger they're facing. Figuiring it his fault, Noctis sets out with the other Champions with selfish goals in mind: To save Asa from a coma he fell into after losing his soul to a corrupted god. It's during his time with them that Noctis realises just how much he cares for the drow, and just how much he needs to learn to trust others--after all, he can't do this alone.
(And yet, even after saving Asa just in the nick of time, the idiot still can't muster up the courage to embrace his feelings. But neither can Asa.)
Noctis' father Nephadius was born and raised in the Under, and thus was involved with the mafia. His mother, on the other hand, is the madame of a brothel and a woman who wants nothing but riches and power. When she wound up pregnant with Nephadius' child, she broke off their fling and pushed the young halfblood on him.
Nephadius wasn't a great father. He was unprepared after Narkissa refused to help raise the kid. Not to mention, he was gone often as his job as a runner for the mafia families of the Under kept him out for various lengths of time. (At least, that was his official excuse). Though when he was home, their relationship was strained, often leading to fighting.
Because of incidental neglect and strained relationship, Noctis spent a lot of time out on the streets of Tricks where he became kind of a nuisance, stealing from people or biting them after discovering his need/desire for blood. However, he frequented the arcanaloth Lenora's home/bakery like many kids who didn't have present parents. It kept him out of trouble for the most part, and he developed a fondness for her pastries despite the bland quality (sugar is expensive, after all). It was at Lenora's that Noctis developed a relationship with Asa, her drow "grandson," and a wolfkin named Nadia. Both Noctis and Asa, bad at handling relationships and their feelings, never outwardly admitted to being friends, but were always helping the other out.
As he grew older, Noctis learned various things. How to take care of himself when his father wouldn't. How to read people and get what he wanted from them. How to deceive. But living in Tricks and growing up with his father didn't only teach him good things--he became distrustful of the people he meets, gradually developing his facade, hiding his feelings away for fear someone would use them to their advantage, and instead used it to keep those he cared about away.
Through some hard work (and a bit of his silver tongue), Noctis found himself a teacher at the Academy in Tricks, where he taught young kids. Though he wasn't sure about the job at first, being a teacher there eventually made him feel like he finally had a purpose--to educate and help the kids who were growing up poor, hungry, and/or mistreated just like he was. Though he's not the best authority or parental figure, Noctis is very passionate about helping younger generations grow up well despite their circumstances, especially if they have the potential to make it out of Tricks one day and tear down the abominable system once and for all.
Despite Noctis' rocky relationship with his father, the sudden disappearance of Nephadius continues to trouble him. Noctis found one of his daggers in the Open Market and no other trace of him at all--and no one will acknowledge the tiefling's existence when questioned about it.
Asa was one of Noctis' two closest friends as a child, though he grew reluctant to call Asa a friend as he grew older and more closed off. Asa was a quiet kid who kept to himself after a tragic accident left him orphaned, and Noctis was drawn to him, always trying to make him smile and feel included. He was also very protective of the quiet drow, often getting into fights with the kids who bullied him. As they grew older, the roles shifted, though they both remain very protective over one another. Noctis is in love with him, but is reluctant to admit it.
Nadia was one of Noctis' two closest friends as a child, and even as he grew more closed off, Nadia never really let him be. She's always been like a big sister to Noctis (and Asa), though she isn't the the best of influences. She and Noctis would often get into a lot of mischief together, much to the dismay of everyone around them. Their relationship has hardly changed over the years, though they no longer cause the sort of trouble kids can get away with.
Ki is a recent friend, and one of the other Champions. Despite their initial distaste for each other, the pair grew close after a misadventure that involved stealing an important dagger from a Leader and stealing both Asa's comatose body and a magical god item from an evil god. They discovered they had much more in common than they initially suspected, and while they still continue to jab at each other, it's no longer with ill intent. Noctis has also grown rather protective over her, in the way he feels protective over his kids. Ki doesn't believe in herself and doesn't seem to think she'll get the happiness she desires, but Noctis is determined to get her the happy ending she deserves.
Noctis was never really close with his father. He wasn't prepared to raise a kid, and his 'job' often kept him away for long spans of time, so Noctis spent most of the time at Lenora's or wandering the streets of Tricks. He resented his father as a child, but began to handle him better as he grew older and more mature, though their relationship remained rocky. Still, Nephadius is the only real family he has, so his sudden disappearance worried Noctis. Nine months and a lot of struggling later, Noctis finally made contact with his dad, thankful to find the older tiefling was still alive.
Who's this bitch? Not his mother, that's for sure. Noctis calls Narkissa by name (or, more commonly, "the bitch"), and typically refuses to acknowledge her existence unless it's to insult her. She's the madame of a brothel and a pretty terrible person. They have a mutual hatred for one another.
Noctis owes Lenora his life. He's very fond of this old arcanaloth after spending most of his childhood at her bakery, the place he'd stay when his father was away. The bakery was a daycare of sorts, a safe haven for the children of Tricks while their parents were working, and it was also the home of Asa as Lenora adopted him. Noctis has always been very grateful for her, and frequented her bakery often. The news of her murder still angers Noctis, and he is determined to avenge her.
