Michael is the kings illegitimate son and thus Nikolas' older half-brother. This is unknown to anyone but the king and his kitchen-maid, Michaels mother (Nikolas has long since guessed it, though). Michael knows he has royal blood in him and he is allowed to bear the name, but still serves a 'just' a valet to the crown prince. As that, he is one of very few people permitted to touch the young prince, with whom he shares a deep bond of mutual, brotherly affection.
