Summary
Formative Years
She was born in the depths of a volcanic wasteland, where exactly is unknown. She was born as the second of two children, the first being her older brother. He was two years older than her, nearly full-grown. When she was six months-old, Caedes and her brother were near a major volcano (The Vaporous Eye) when it erupted. The young stallion realized the danger that they were in and was guiding her back toward the hopeful safety of home when he was struck by a large rock, jettisoned into the air by the eruption. The force of the rock hitting him knocked her brother out for a few minutes. When he woke up, in a daze he managed to tell a young and frightened Caedes to run home, reassuring her he would be right behind her. So, she did as he asked, eager to escape but not quite mature enough to understand that he might not make it behind her. It was days before her parents could go back and look for the young stallion. They were so sure that he was okay, that he simply found cover, that he was just too injured to make it home. What a shocking discovery it was for them that he died there in the same spot where Caedes left him, crumpled on the ground.
This tragic accident changed the relationship with her parents and the environment in which she grew up. Overall, her father became cruel and distant. He was someone she tried to make proud every day, but she always failed him for trivial reasons that he always managed to come up with. He was really distant with Caedes. She could not do right by him; simply because she was a female and because he blamed her for his son’s death. Her father really broke down and muddled through the steps of grieving. For the first couple of months, he just isolated himself and would try to deny that he was dead. Then, he was just angry... ALL the time. He was aggressive and rude, was just awful to Caedes, because he blamed her for it. Her mother simply tried to make up for that distance and cruelty by being everything she could be to her daughter. Her mother was her best friend.
The eruption of The Vaporous Eye tossed ash and soot into the atmosphere and covered the entirety of Kormada. It erased day and night and allowed for bioluminescent plant life to flourish. Caedes even remembers looking at the brightly-lit flowers in wonder as a young filly. It was a year before the ash blocking out the sun began to thin. Days and nights returned; the sun and stars were visible again. It was at about this time that her sire exiled her from the only home she had ever known. Eventually, his mind had started conjuring delusions: his son being wherever he looked, even saying the Caedes was to blame, that the father knew it all along, and eventually it convinced him to banish her or cause her extreme harm.
The exile was really hard on her. Caedes was only two years-old, kind of like a young teenager. She was alone for months, receiving brief visits from her mother, who was the only real being in her life. Caedes could never really explain to herself why she stayed on the edge of her home for those long months alone. Maybe it was out of duty to her father to prove she could be just good as could as the son he lost. Perhaps she didn’t want to leave her mother alone with him, or maybe she just scared to go out into the world alone. Eventually, her mother came to bring her home, and Caedes foolishly thought that her father had finally come to reconsider her banishment. The happiness of the reunion was short-lived, as her father appeared and lost his mind. In his addled mind, the illusion of her brother convinced him that his mater (Caedes’ mother) had been in league with Caedes in the so-called “plot” to kill his son. She was a traitor to him. He came after his mate, and she didn’t try to fight, instead trying to calm him down and assure him that she loved him and that what happened to their son was an accident. Nothing she said mattered to him, and he killed her. Caedes then, in all her raw rage and loss, began attacking her father. Her youth lent her a small advantage. Caedes truly doesn’t remember most of this, but remembered the final hollow sound of her hooves crushing her father’s skull into the rocky ground.
Then, she left. “Home” was just a word to her, now that her mother was dead. She spent a long time of her life trying to erase the effect of her parents. Caedes focused her present and her future for so long that she only thought about them again recently. She barely even remembers having an older brother, since she was just six months-old when he died.
Kormada
Her grief and rage blocked out her reasoning and brought her to the conclusion that the only way to fill the void her mother's death left was to become a mother herself. And just before winter arrived, she gave birth to her first child. She stayed with the father for a little while, but it became clear to Caedes that they were dissimilar and that she needed someone different who could give her what she needed. Being a young mother, Caedes had to believe that leaving the filly was better than faking happiness for years to come.
She was nearly six when she wandered into the Faults, road-wearied and irritable. It was hardly the condition in which a stallion should force a claim on her. But force he did, that stallion called Thane. The Lipizzaner forced his claim upon her, trapping the Friesian within the borders of the dusty red land. For six long years, Caedes haunted the Faults, bearing two daughters for the stallion, inadvertently seeking his approval and attention. Alas, it would be something the black would never receive. Despite her time spent in the Faults, it was easy for her to leave. After wandering for a while, she settled enough to conceive and give birth to Requiem, whose sire was not up to par after all. So, she left, taking her child with her this time.
Some time later, Caedes met Friction. He interrupted a bout of her rage toward Requiem, one brought on by years of failed efforts and bearing no sons. After talking for some time, Caedes agreed to live with him. Something was different about him, she thought. They had an understanding, and he offered her a safe place to call home. Friction took on Requiem as a student of sorts, much to Caedes' delight. Over the years, Caedes grew to love the bay stallion. She gave him three children: two daughters (Sanctum and Ronové) and, finally, a son. The birth of a son meant the world to the mare, and, for her, it finally meant peace. But, like all things in her life, it did not last. For not long after Ryse met his sire for the first time, Friction died after protecting Sanctum from a pack of wolves. It was a horrifying sight that would haunt her forever. She retreated within herself, except for what care and tutelage that Ryse required. She never looked for Lilian (the other mare who kept her lover company) or the child of Friction's that she was carrying. She threw herself into raising Ryse and keeping tabs on the rest of her family, however estranged.
She adopted Liatris (her great-granddaughter through Konsair, her second daughter), after her mother Epiphany was murdered. She witnessed the whole thing, as did the filly. Requiem, after joining her mother after her claimer's death, was pregnant. With a child descended from Thane, no less. Caedes was less than pleased, to say the least. They went to the Quarry where all foals were born, Requiem followed by Konsair and her son Fallen, much to Caedes' knowledge. Requiem's striking similarity to Caedes could not have gone unnoticed. Her painted daughter followed them to where Caedes and her band had gathered, coming across Louron (her third daughter) and some of her children. After Konsair joined the crowd, Caedes took the liberty of telling her of Epiphany's demise at the hooves of a spotted stallion called Napoleon, knowing that Louron knew him. She (Louron) had saved the brat from demons in her home, her own mate was his father. Louron returned home furious that her niece had been murdered by a colt she should have let die, her great-nephew was kidnapped. To Caedes' dismay, nothing ever came of it as Louron died not long afterward.
Caedes returned to Canary's Carnage (Friction's long-time home) with Ryse and Konsair's daughter Hollow after he was of age and able to claim the land for his own. The Scourge, a storm of red insects that devoured anything green and anyone painted, headed for their continent, spurred Ryse into action. Knowing that she would slow him down in his escape from the Scourge, Caedes let him have a wolf murder her. You would think that that kind of life would have been enough for the Friesian mare, but sometimes things don't stay buried.
The Afterlife-She wandered her afterlife, a barren place of cracked soil, until she could find Friction. Gradually, the dark desert turned into a forest, green and lush, but faded like most other things there. And she found him. They spent their time in silence, but happy. While she spent her afterlife with her love, her granddaughter Hollow couldn't let go of the Friesian mare. Caedes had been murdered, and she wouldn't let Ryse get away with it.
Hollow found the Scourge-ridden wyvern Kestrel, their supposed deity, and made a deal with him: she would help rid him of the Scourge that now infected his body and mind, and he would revive Caedes. Before Kestrel could make good on his promise, he was stripped of his powers and immortality by the Halcyon, another deity long since forgotten. And Hollow would have none of that. She pursued the Halcyon, told her of what she was promised. The Halcyon told her it was against Nature to bring back the dead, that Kestrel had promised more than she would dare. Hollow debated for long hours and managed to convince the great bird to make an exception. Kestrel had made a promise, and the Halcyon would see it through, against her better judgment.
Reincarnation-So Caedes was existing with Friction for many years until his spirit began to fade, his existence being torn away right in front of her. Desperate and crazed, Caedes pleaded for him to stay, but there was nothing Friction could do. Eventually, Caedes could no longer see or feel him. It was like losing him all over again. It was maddening. Sensation seeped into her for the first time since she died. And it was hot, like her rage and loss. She screamed in her infinite anger, scorching her back into existence.
To Hollow's dismay, the onyx female was not reborn in Kormada, but in the misty forest of a new world called Caeleste. She stood motionless in the quiet wood, with ash still clinging to her neck and shoulders from the firestorm that had brought her, reforged her in this new world.
