About
Rei is a well-known member of the Dollars and a recognizable face for those involved in the world of gangs and underground activities in Ikebukuro. She doesn't have a single specific occupation, rather performing miscellaneous jobs on something of a freelance practice, having worked even with the Awakusu-kai and, most frequently, Orihara Izaya.
Her past involvement with the Blue Squares was what first made her well-known across Ikebukuro as a capable fighter, albeit under a nickname. Nowadays she is much less confrontational, but still regains all her capabilities from back then. She is skilled both in hand-to-hand combat and the use of a weapon like a knife or a blade, as well as displaying great agility and acrobatic skills.
Rei has ties all across the city and with all sorts of people. She considers her friends to be her family, and chiefly among them - Heiwajima Shizuo, Kishitani Shinra, and Orihara Izaya.
Personality
Rei is the kind of person who can't help but stand out.
In her early teenage years, that was something she had to learn to hide. She put on the persona of a quiet, prim and proper kind of student who was meant to blend into the background and quickly be forgotten. Even then, she still got excited easily, she wanted to try things which seemed unordinary, which made that facade hard to keep up and was the reason she was eventually found out by Izaya and Shinra. In the security of their company, she slowly let her real, curious and bright-eyed self emerge and develop into the person she would become.
She is easily drawn by the unoridnary and the new and despises boredom. Fortunately, she has a chill and outgoing personality which makes it easy to engage with all sorts of fascinating people on the regular.
Back when she was in the Blue Squares, she used to be more hot-headed and impulsive. She hesitated less about picking fights and wanted nothing more than to live fully to make up for the years lost in fear and worry, but when the gang collapsed and Rei realized the severity of what had happened, she mellowed out a little.
She is easy to annoy, but not really to upset - in fact, sometimes she feels like she forgives a bit too easily. More than anything, what matters to her are the connections to her friends, who she sees as family. Without them, she would neither be the person that she is today, nor as happy as she is. Maybe she wouldn't even be alive. That's why, few things can hurt her as much as the pain and suffering of her friends, yet despite that, she still seems awfully reluctant to talk to them about the things that weigh on her. She can be rather indecisive when important matters are concerned, leading to regrets and what-ifs.
History
Early Childhood
Harukawa Riemi was born in a regular family living a perfectly comfortable life in Hokkaido. Her parents both worked throughout the day, so she frequently had to care for her younger brother Hiro when he was barely even a toddler. As time passed, her father became involved in some recreational gambling. It was of seemingly no concern until the company he worked at went under unexpectedly. Fortunately, her mother had been promoted quite high over the years, so she was able to sustain the family on her own.
The guilt at being unable to contribute monetarily to the household ate away at Riemi's father and soon his previously fun pastime turned into an outright addiction - some nights he would win, and so the next day he'd return to the pachinko parlors with renewed determination to aid his family (or rather, ease his own guilt) somehow, only to lose it all and more. As the sums he gambled away grew, relations in the family became strained too - his wife was unhappy with him wasting hard-earned money instead of letting them go towards their kids. He began borrowing money from friends, former colleagues, and other addicts at his parlor instead. He was racking up debt and eventually turned to a suspicious group offering him a spectacularly large amount of money. That's how he found himself entangled with loan sharks working directly with the local yakuza.
Of course, he could never hope to repay them all that money, so they began threatening him, all the while his family knew nothing of it. One evening, driving home under the influence after a depressing loss streak, he got into a bad car accident which killed him on the spot. By that point, his family felt like they barely even knew him anymore, so they were shaken, but not outright striken with grief.
However, the loan sharks took this as their opportunity to begin harassing his family instead. They threatened them to pay up first, though even if they couldn't, there were plenty of ways they could get them to 'repay their debt'. After an accident when little Hiro was nearly kidnapped, Riemi's mother decided to take the kids and run away, living in hiding for a while until their pursuers gave up on them.
Eventually though, even on a different island entirely, they were found and again escaped only narrowly. Clearly it was impossible to hide effectively like this, so a difficult decision was reached. The three were to split - Riemi's mother would take Hiro, while Riemi would go on her own. This way, moving around would be easier for each group and they would be more difficult to identify, since their pursuers would likely be looking for a family of three. Throughout this time, they would have no contact with each other, so as to ensure that if one party is caught, the other(s) can't be traced. And maybe one day, years in the future when everything is finally back to normal again, they could try to find each other.
In the meantime though, a then 14 year old Riemi was headed to Tokyo.
Raijin Days
Almost at random, Riemi chose to attend a middle school in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. She chose to rent a small apartment in the school's vicinity with the hefty sum of money her mother had left her when they parted ways, instead of signing up for dorms in fear of the school's database being easy to breach compared to a spoken contract with a landlord. Her main goal at this new school, despite transferring there in her second year of middle school, was to blend into the crowd.
She tried to present herself as a perfectly normal, rather boring student, with good but not exceptional grades, a soft-spoken manner and a proper appearance not even worth a second take. She would say no more than absolutely necessary, hoping that maybe she'd blend into the background enough that even her own classmates would sometimes forget she exists, all to make it harder to trace her. She couldn't legally change her name yet, but frequently chose to introduce herself not as Riemi, but Rei - that way if somebody didn't bother enough to double-check her name, they wouldn't even realize it's different.
Two things put a wrench in those plans on her very first day at Raijin. The first was one she wouldn't really realize for a few more weeks - that painfully normal presentation of hers caught the eye of one Orihara Izaya, who was already looking forward to getting to observe a brand new classmate. More than that, as they entered middle school, kids began exploring their identities and appearances, they experimented with their outfits and their hair, tried on different styles - which paradoxically made Rei, the girl staying firmly away from all of that, stand out in his eyes. He was suspicious that there was more to her than she let on, and him overhearing her introduce herself as Harukawa Rei later the same day, despite Riemi still being written on the blackboard behind her, further confirmed things.
The second problem could at least be dealt with, she had thought. After introducing the new transfer student on the first day of class, the homeroom teacher moved on to assigning class representatives. With nobody volunteering, he attempted to pick on his own, landing on Rei under the argument that it would be a good opportunity for her to get to know some of her classmates and upperclassmen, on top of already looking like a responsible person who could be trusted with such tasks. Much less understandable was his choice to assign the second seat to Kishitani Shinra who only really looked like the studious type. It was probably revenge for their mostly-fake biology club, Shinra would realize eventually.
To Rei's surprise, however, Shinra walked up to her as soon as they were dismissed and begged to offload any and all after-school activities to her. He explained how he had someone important waiting for him at home every day and didn't want to be held up at school unnecessarily, promising to provide any signatures and materials asked of him, as well as unique excuses for why he couldn't attend each time. He expected to have to beg for a while, but Rei accepted as soon as he paused his incessant ramblings. Really, this worked out great for her too - she would have much rather kept her distance from all her classmates, but arguing against the homeroom teacher's decisions would have caused trouble and surely drawn unnecessary attention her way. But this way, she not only had an excuse to spend more time on school grounds (which she considered safer), but wouldn't have to join a club either.
For the next few weeks things went along as planned. Rei would attend meetings and bring Shinra materials that needed his approval or signature, which he would gladly provide. They only talked once or twice a week and it was always brief. Rei was a little wary of Shinra, who seemed awfully perceptive, but fortunately always too preoccupied to really pay too much attention to her. But she was even more wary of Shinra's singular friend who frequently tagged along with him. He was a troubling looking guy named Orihara Izaya and he always seemed to be looking right past the facade Rei put up, almost daring her to peek out from behind it. He always remained eerily quiet despite the way he'd look at her, but Rei avoided approaching Shinra when he was around either way.
Unfortunately, sometimes she just had to. After Shinra had spent a few days absent from school, and there was a signature due the very same afternoon, Rei had no choice but to find him during lunchbreak with none other than Izaya. The latter simply stared at her, amused, while she and Shinra tried to get things sorted out as quickly as they could. Just when she thought they were finally done and she could breathe a sigh of relief, something whizzed right past her head. A few moments of silence followed, only for Shinra to burst out in apologies - a background noise to which Rei slowly turned back to see a switchblade embedded in the wall behind her. Looking back, Izaya hadn't even bothered to retract his still outstretched arm, looking at her with an innocent grin.
The shock had shaken her enough for her mouth to work before her brain could. For a moment, Rei had forgotten all about the place and time and circumstances, managing only a quiet question with a glint of excitement in her eyes - "Can you teach me how to do that?" It was only when Izaya burst out laughing that her own words caught up with her and she bowed in apology, all but running off.
Rei proceeded to spend the remainder of the day beating herself up for that stupid slip-up after how well she had been doing the past month. She reassured herself that it would probably be fine in the end though - those two were strange enough themselves, so surely her little slip-up will be forgotten eventually. It's not like they were credible sources anyway, even if they chose to tell somebody, which she strongly doubted. It just meant it was time to learn to forge Shinra's signature and avoid them for the foreseeable future.
She bolted out of the classroom as soon as the final bell rang, arriving early at her class representatitves meeting and barely even paying attention to most of it, the documents from Shinra left forgotten on the rooftop with him. In the end, she found herself returning to the classroom to pick up her phone, which she had forgotten under her desk in her panic earlier. Finally relieved that nothing had come out of that bizarre exchange, Rei was ready to go home - but was stopped by an unexpected sound.
She looked down at the desk, finding the documents from lunchbreak, complete with Shinra's signature, and a familiar switchblade clattering into stillness on top. Looking up, she met a familiar innocent grin too. Izaya beckoned her to come along, since they didn't have all day. When Rei questioned him, he reminded her that she wanted to learn to use the blade and you don't just learn by looking at it. That's how Rei found herself all but dragged into the biology club room, where she also found an anxious Shinra, repeatedly remarking how this was a terrible idea.
Nonetheless, they proceeded with their lesson, Rei trying but miserably failing to keep up her usual act when being mercilessly poked at with Izaya's well-picked provocations. Despite her reluctance, she found herself barely protesting the next few times she was taken along to these impromptu lessons and eventually warmed up to the two. It was too late to keep up a facade in front of them, she thought, so she let herself act more freely like, well, herself. The lessons became a much-needed break from keeping up pretense at all other times and she eventually started enjoying herself and Izaya and Shinra's company. They were certainly strange, but so was Rei as well.
Sometimes Izaya would attempt to poke around about matters of her past. No matter how comfortable she got, that was one topic she always brushed off and avoided. Shinra knew better than to pry, but Izaya had already done a basic background check on her. He knew about her father's death and that she had a mother and a younger brother, so he tried to string it all together in a story - maybe Rei had a poor relationship with her mother, thus running away after her father's death and insisting on being called by a different name out of sheer spite. He felt like he was missing something but every time he'd bring up details that Rei did not remember telling him, she'd freeze up and sternly end the conversation.
Despite that, the three became pretty close. They all moved on to high school together, where Shinra introduced them to Shizuo as well. While Rei's first impression was him trying to flatten Izaya into the ground, she realized he was actually really kind and understanding when she could finally talk to him in peace. She almost found him too sensible to have been a friend of Shinra's, but only until she remembered how fast he was to flip off at the wrong choice of words.
By high school Rei had grown a lot more comfortable with being that self of hers who couldn't help but stand out. As the years passed, she felt less and less threatened by the pursuers from her past. Her friends made her feel safe and happy, so she finally started growing into her own person. She let Shinra help her get a pair of contact lenses to replace the clunky glasses that always seemed to get in her way. Shizuo showed her how to bleach her hair, now a mid-tone brown fading into blonde at the ends as opposed to the pure untouched black that was her natural. Of course, her lessons with Izaya never stopped, though after a while they had moved onto simply sparring instead, so Rei could develop her own style of handling the weapon. Everything was perfect. And yet.
A day before graduation, Rei and Shinra were bearing witness to another one of Shizuo and Izaya's fights, placing bets and watching from the sidelines. Just when Rei decided it was late enough and time for them to stop, the fight seemed to escalate and the two started chasing each other across Ikebukuro, Rei and Shinra left to catch up.
Eventually a crowd formed around a ring of destruction - one of their biggest fights in a long time, Rei realized. She found herself stepping in to put an end to things just as Shizuo almost effortlessly hoisted up an entire car. Before she could say anything though, a loud sound echoed across the plaza. The many spectators of the massive fight looked around in shock, realizing the sound did not, in fact, come from the car, which was still in Shizuo's arms and not yet hurled at Izaya. Rei wondered too, as her ears kept ringing and ringing.
She realized it only when a sharp seering pain came from her shoulder. The last thing she saw before collapsing was droplets of blood gathering at her feet, as Shinra's distant yelling of her name faded into silence. The sound had been that of a gunshot.
She awoke from the shock in a hospital, alredy stabilized and surrounded by police and doctors. She was promptly questioned about the event, but denied knowing of anyone who would want to hurt her like that. The police then concluded that it must have been a random shooting in a crowded place, though even they seemed unconvinced at the idea.
Rei knew the truth, of course. She had been found and had escaped narrowly yet again. In the moment the shot had been fired, Shizuo had nearly hurled a car - she suspected that, along with her sudden movement to stop the fight, had thrown off whoever had tried to shoot at her just enough to miss the kill shot. She had no doubt they would be back to finish the job before long, so she had to get out of here as soon as possible.
Early the next day, as soon as the hospital would even let them, her three friends barged into the room. First and foremost was Shinra, face pale and hands scared to even hug her too tight lest he caused her pain. Shizuo and Izaya were with him too, albeit rather quiet. They expressed their worry but Rei assured them that, miraculously, she was fine and would make a quick recovery. She repeated the police's unconvincing story to let them know there was nothing to worry about and ushered them to attend the graduation ceremony when she realized they were already running late by coming here to visit. Shinra let her go, reluctantly, but decided to listen to her and promised he'd be back the next day. He eyed Izaya as he and Shizuo left but, as he suspected, Izaya didn't look like he was going anywhere. At least it was a relief to know that the culprit wouldn't be able to stay hidden, Shinra thought as he left the two alone.
Rei suspected this would happen too, although she really hoped she could avoid it. Though she tried to play dumb, Izaya made it pretty clear that he'd done his research - he admitted of his previous theory for Rei's circumstances, having found it satisfying enough all this time. But finding out somebody was wanted by yakuza from Hokkaido wasn't exactly easy to come across information. Knowing better now, he'd looked thoroughly enough to uncover what was really going on. He asked Rei what she planned to do next, tone almost accusatory at her for playing this off like it was nothing and like that shot hadn't meant to kill.
Naturally, Rei was upset as well. She knew this was serious, she knew it was dumb luck that saved her and she knew she had to do something about this. But as things stood now, all trying to face the past was going to do for her was probably get her killed for good. That's why, she decided, she would run away one final time. Riemi would disappear forever soon and someone else would come back in her place. Someone else, who would be able to deal with the past and with its consequences. She thanked Izaya for the time they got to spend together and promised she would be back. Izaya, an amused grin on his face, offered her to help instead.
That same night, he helped her escape her hospital room through the window, a car waiting for her in a dark, blind spot beside the building - it was someone Izaya knew and the plan was to take her away for a while, where she'd find different ways to become stronger, both physically and mentally. Before she got into the car, Rei turned to Izaya one last time, asking him to let Shinra and Shizuo know she was alright, subtly. He wished her a safe trip and that night, Harukawa Riemi disappeared.
Return to Ikebukuro & Blue Squares
Rei found her way back home about two years later. During that time, she had no contact with anyone in Ikebukuro, but suspected Izaya had probably kept tabs on her occasionally. The reunion occured during a New Year's festival, welcoming the year they were all to attend their Coming of Age Ceremony. Shinra had attempted to invite Celty with him, but she had, of course, refused, so his plan then became to go out with his friends, have a wonderful night, and make Celty just curious enough to accept his offer next time. Problem was, Shinra's friends were barely a plural number, so he found himself wandering the festival grounds with no one but Izaya for company.
It didn't take long for them no notice an unusual commotion from one of the game booths - a single person hitting all three of the game's biggest targets in consecutive shots with the small bow. Izaya quickly realized and once the crowd dispersed, so did Shinra - it was Rei. She greeted both of them enthusiastically, Izaya insisting that best he had for Rei's arrival was an educated guess. Rei was handed a big plush toy (Shinra's present to Celty, they decided), and a whole stack of food stall tickets, so the three caught up over trying the festival's snacks. They briefly ran into Kadota (with Togusa in tow), to whom Rei introduced herself as Natsumi Rei, signalling to Shinra that she had officially changed not just her appearance - the bright red hair almost making him not recognize her at first - but her name as well.
A strange commotion nearby brought another surprise guest to them - Shizuo had been scouting out the area for problems as Kasuka was passing through, but he took a brief detour upon noticing Rei beside Shinra (Izaya had taken off while nobody was looking). While the two greeted each other, Shinra's phone lit up with a notification from Celty and he ran off. As Rei and Shizuo promised they'll see each other around, Rei decided to make one final stop as the noise around assured her midnight had passed.
She made her way to a small shrine a short trek away from the festival (there was a much bigger one, with shrine maidens, omikuji and the likes just in the opposite direction, which is where the festival crowds had flocked to, leaving this one eerily quiet). As expected, she found Izaya standing a few feet away from it, asking her a question without turning to look - did she think there was really a god in that shrine? Rei didn't have a very good response, settling for something like an 'it depends', but Izaya brushed it off. She did, however, say that she would have to thank them, if gods really existed, that is, because they had helped her meet her friends and survive all these incidents to be where she was now. Deciding maybe it was worth offering a prayer, she got up and Izaya tossed her a coin when she couldn't find one on herself.
As she finished up, Izaya thought of one more thing. Recalling the day she left Ikebukuro, he told her "It's a pleasure to meet you, Rei". She smiled and responded accordingly.
For the first few weeks after her return, Rei did miscellaneous part-time jobs to sustain herself. Izaya off-handedly offered her to occasionally work with him too - Rei was someone he knew to be capable and trustworthy, so he could safely entrust her with anything he needed. It was all sorts of tasks from accompanying him to meetings with suspicious individuals and carrying around important information (since Celty's courier services wouldn't replace that for a few more months at least), to chasing after and taking down troublemakers when a job asked for it. Through this, Rei met a number of Izaya's clients, who would sometimes request her services directly, thus introducing her to newer and newer people each time.
Eventually her net expanded and she was able to sustain herself off of a variety of jobs for a variety of people, going as far as the Awakusu-kai on occasions. Around this time, a gang calling themselves the Blue Squares came into prominence. Rei was hot-blooded, eager to put her past two years of training to the test, and joined without hesitation when the opportunity presented itself. Her reputation quickly spread - she was one of the gangs' most skilled fighters, possessing agility which made her attacks entirely unpredictable for the average opponent. Soon, rumors started spreading - of this so-called Natsu no Aji, feared among any who dared mess with the Blue Squares.
Those rumors quickly morphed though, painting the image of Natsu no Aji as a big, muscly man, whose sheer looming presence and horrifying face was enough to intimidate his opponents. Rei had been excited at the nickname at first - though lame, it seemed as if the town itself had welcomed her back and named her anew - she was a little disappointed when nobody could recognize her as the holder of that name. Not until she easily overpowered them and bitterly introduced herself as Natsumi Rei, at least.
In the Blue Squares she met Kadota and the rest of the Van Gang, finding them a breath of fresh air in a world full of reckless brats and delinquents. Rei's own immediate circle in the gang had taken to calling her Natsu, playing on her nickname. She was enjoying herself greatly, alternating between performing different jobs and patroling with her fellow Blue Squares, occasionally even showing up some other, smaller gangs.
The situation soured with the Yellow Scarves' arrival on the scene though. Initially, the Blue Squares had the clear upper hand - Rei wasn't particularly involved with that side of things, since she wasn't too interested in fighting against kids, but she knew the Blue Squares' boss didn't particularly care about honesty and the likes (if anything, he rubbed her the wrong way for it, but she rarely had to take direct orders from him so it didn't really matter anyway). The tables turned though, as rumors started going around that the Yellow Scarves had decimated a patrol group of theirs recently. Rei discussed that with her own group, thinking that they must have been exaggerating to make excuses for their defeat, before going to fetch drinks for everyone.
When she returned barely a minute later, she found her teammates all subdued on the ground by a group of kids all sporting yellow. The groups' leader - Koji - informed his fellow Yellow Scarves that the woman standing in front of them was the famed Natsu no Aji, so they shouldn't underestimate her. Rei was surprised at their thorough knowledge and prepared for a fight. She could deal with this number of amateur fighters usually, but she found herself on the defensive - the kids kept attacking with no regard for each others' safety, so jabs which she could otherwise easily dodge would have still connected with someone else regardless (almost like they knew she didn't want them to hurt each other badly either), on top of them seemingly knowing the particular range she was weakest in. It wasn't until one of her teammates wiggled out of his captor's grasp enough to throw one of the drink cans at a kids' face that just enough of a disruption was created in their formation for Rei to knock the weapons out of the Yellow Scarves' hands and take them out with the help of the other Blue Squares.
Soon enough, she pinned the Koji guy against a wall and threatened him to spill exactly how they knew about this patrol and about her. The boy laughed as she pressed a knife against his cheek, saying that he knew she wouldn't hurt him. Rei raised a brow as the boy went on to praise their shogun's source. "Natsu no Aji is not the kind of person who would do anything to kids like you," the source had said. Rei finally put the pieces together.
About an hour later, a young Kida was in Izaya's Shinjuku office, marveling at his information after receiving a text from Koji announcing that they had apprehended Natsu no Aji and her team successfully. He was interrupted when the door to Izaya's office burst open and someone incredibly familiar stormed in. Natsu - Natsumi Rei, as she was apparently called - walked right past him and gripped Izaya's collar, looking at him with pure anger. Izaya simply smiled innocently while Rei contemplated which question to even ask him first. That was when she noticed Kida in the corner, his pale face and yellow scarf giving her a good idea of who he was. She let Izaya go and took a breath to calm herself a little before warning Kida, in a low and serious voice, that he was lucky today - she handed him Koji's phone, assuring him that his friends were fine. But the world he was entering into wasn't going to be this kind forever and someone was going to get hurt if this kept up. She spared one final, fed up look at Izaya and left.
The Yellow Scarves continued to dominate the Blue Squares after that. Some time later, Rei found herself in yet another shuffled team, since a few of her regular teammates were still recovering from being jumped last time. She didn't like this one at all though - it was all guys she knew were very close with Izumii. It was quiet, stifling, and boring. They were all looking at her like hawks, so she gladly took the excuse to get away for a bit when her phone rang.
She was surprised to hear Kadota on the other line, but even more surprised when he exlpained that Izumii had kidnapped the girlfriend of the leader of the Yellow Scarves and that Kadota and his gang were on their way to rescue her. Rei, too, had been assigned with this particular group so they could stop her if she tried to intervene. Kadota offered to pick her up on the way to the hospital after they've rescued Saki, but warned her that she'd have to hold out on her own until then. Rei replied that she would manage, turning back to find Izumii's goons already cracking their necks for a fight.
Later, in Raira General Hospital, she bolted out of her room almost as soon as her fractured arm was all fixed up. She was headed straight to where she knew Saki was, already hearing Izaya's voice echoing from down the hall, talking about the way the past would always haunt you. She couldn't exactly disagree but the problem was, it wasn't her this was directed at. Silence ensued when she found him and Kida. Wordlessly, she approached Izaya and, after a moment, struck him across the face. He asked her, after yet another moment of silence as the sound echoed across the room, if that made her feel any better. "Not at all," she replied. He didn't even try to argue as she told him to leave. He was going to be back, of that all three were certain, but he didn't need to mess up Kida's brain any more than he already had.
Albeit a little awkwardly, Rei attempted to assure Kida that what Izaya had said was all nonsense, stuff not worth listening to. Kida seemed to disagree but chose to apologize to her for not listening instead and thanked her for helping rescue Saki. Rei shook her head and explained that he should be thanking Kadota and his group for this. She continued, telling him how it wasn't entirely untrue that the past followed you forever but, in the end, it was all about what you made of it.
Present time
Some time later, Izaya randomly brought up a new, unusual gang called the Dollars. Rei rolled her eyes at the idea, having no intention of involving herself with things like that after what happened with the Blue Squares. Later that same night, she received an email with an invitation link and chose to ignore it, knowing full well exactly who had sent it.
A few weeks after that, entirely unpormpted, Karisawa and Yumasaki interrupted their own incomprehensible tangents to talk about the Dollars - bragging that they were all members, they asked if Rei was one too. She denied, to which the two took to convincing her that she should join, only stopped by Kadota intervening. Rei realized then that if the very people who could best understand her reluctance to join another gang were members, maybe she should check it out. She was still itching for the unordinary, after all. That same night, she opened the link, secretly a little glad she never deleted the email, and registered on the site.
At present, Rei still sustains herself off miscellaneous jobs for all sorts of different people. She still works with Izaya quite frequently but has connections spanning the entire city and good knowledge of local groups and gangs. Her status as a member of the Dollars has become somewhat known publicly via rumors, though to her relief her former nickname from the Blue Squares days is slowly starting to die out for good.
Finally able to comfortably lead the eventful life she's always dreamed of, Rei is now looking to clear up the last few ghosts of her past. And with them, maybe even understand her own feelings a little better.
Trivia
- Rei's birth name is Harukawa Riemi (春川梨笑). Harukawa contains the kanji for spring - 春 haru, and river, stream - 川 kawa. Riemi contains the kanji for pear - 梨 rie, and smile, laugh - 笑 mi.
- When she changed her name legally, she chose Natsumi Rei (夏味伶), consisting of summer - 夏 natsu, flavor/taste - 味 mi, and actor - 伶 rei. She kept the seasonal theme of her original surname (but changed it to summer, which she felt fit her better), as well as the mi sound. Her Natsu no Aji (夏の味) nickname is derived from her surname too - it uses the same kanji but with a particle between them and a different reading of 味, literally meaning "taste/flavor of summer". This is why she emphasizes her last name when sarcastically introducing herself to someone underestimating her.
- In the past, Rei wore glasses due to her bad eyesight. Around the end of middle school Shinra had noticed her complaining about them and offered to set her up with a pair of contact lenses instead. She still needs lenses to see properly.
- The personal pronoun Rei uses most often is 私 watashi. Sometimes, when she gets a little too excited or carried away (especially around people she's close with), she slips into using atashi as well. On rare occasions when she wants to appear more threatening or emphasize her identity as Natsu, she also uses 俺 ore.
- Rei is somewhere on the aroace spectrum. She has turned down a few confessions, especially in high school, confused why people who barely knew her were interested in her. She still struggles with recognizing romantic attraction, which is why it takes her a good long while to come to terms with her feelings, among other things.
- She is seldom dressed appropriately for the season. Even during the colder months, she often lacks sleeves and prefers the comfort of shorts with some tights to try and keep her warm (only during the coldest days of winter can she sometimes be seen wearing a jacket or leggings underneath the shorts). She brushes comments about this off, claiming that she's used to the cold because she grew up in Hokkaido. It quite fits her name at least.
- Rei held the position of class representative in her second year of middle school. Her third year was spent avoiding having to participate in any actual club activities, relunctantly signing up for Izaya and Shinra's 'biology club', where she simply continued her practice with Izaya. Come high school, however, Rei had become a lot less cautious and a lot more willing to put herself out there, the fear of her pursuers and past forgotten. She signed up for the archery club, which she attended and excelled at for all three years.
- Rei frequently introduces herself by her first name and prefers to be referred to as such, with people being free to add their honorifics of choice. Karisawa still can't settle on a good nickname for her though, so she just calls her something different every time - Rei-chan, Rie-chan, Reicchi, Reimi, Rei-Rei, and the list goes on.

Relationships
Orihara Izaya
[ ♦♦♦ ]Though they started off entirely on the wrong foot, both were just weird enough to be able to put all that aside and start building up a proper relationship from there. Rei has known Izaya for years - she has seen him try to distance himself from the human in him for the sake of observing it in others and it drives her up the wall. The only reason he can't understand why she keeps staying by his side after all these years is because he keeps thinking of himself as just that unlovable.
Despite this, there's a great sense of mutual understanding and respect between them. For a long time, Izaya was the only person who knew about Rei's past and in whom she could confide about it. For just as long, Rei has been one of the only people who have stuck with Izaya through thick and thin. She rarely knows what he's planning, but she also knows that he cares about her and about Shinra and about his sisters and probably about some others, on occasions, so he'd do a lot to help them, even if he would pretend it was for different reasons altogether. Izaya, on the other hand, knows he can entrust Rei with just about anything because she isn't the kind to betray those close to her.
They've had their fair share of disagreements over the years, but even still, Rei cannot let go. It always pains her having to choose between the rest of her family and Izaya but, well, one day she might just have to.
Kishitani Shinra
[ ♦♦♦ ]Rei finds Shinra really, really sweet and oddly charming, though many would likely disagree. Calling him the voice of reason might be an exaggeration, but he really knows how to say just the right thing and then make it sound like it was so, so painfully obvious.
She felt terrible about having kept him in the dark about so many things for years but, right now at least, she feels grateful instead that he spent all this time waiting for her with open arms. Shinra gives the biggest, warmest hugs, which make Rei feel so loved and safe, even if she would be the one doing the protecting if it came to it.
Of course, she knows she'll always be second in Shinra's heart to Celty but Shinra's heart is big, so that was never a concern.
Heiwajima Shizuo
[ ♦♦♦ ]Contrary to expectations, Shizuo was perhaps the most sensible one in their group throughout high school. His ability to say the smartest things isn't quite as effortless as Shinra's, but his advice is short and to the point instead, the kind that brings you back to earth and reminds you that even if you're struggling, you've got friends to help you out.
Rei knows just how deeply Shizuo cares for his friends (especially because few have earned the right to call themselves that in the first place), and so she certainly feels safe with him, but also admires his ability to spring to action when he needs to.
To her, he's like the experienced older brother who will help you without even asking and then ruffle your hair in the end (which he sure loves to do to Rei, cursed be their height difference... not that she really minds).
Celty Sturluson
[ ♦♦ ]To this day, Rei doesn't know Celty all too well, at least compared to how others like Shizuo and even Mikado know her, but she knows that Shinra loves her with all his heart and that's enough for her to place her trust in Celty.
Plus, Rei does know that she's always kind, reliable, and capable, with kick-ass supernatural abilities to boot!! If anything, she hopes Celty would let her ride with her on that bike someday but until then, she'll just have to entrust Shinra to her, knowing that he'll be in good hands.
The Van Gang
[ ♦♦ ]Rei first met Kadota and company back in their Blue Squares days. Among a gang of brats and punks with especially questionable moral standings (though really, it was her own fault for having poor judgement in the first place), those four were a breath of fresh air. They were fun and (mostly) sensible and just so damn cool.
At the end of the day though, they really don't know each other all too deeply and it's not like Rei's too eager to let others in on the things she's struggling with. She knows it's probably the same for them, but she also knows they would be at her side at a moment's notice if she were in trouble and that's enough for her. Of course, the feeling is entirely mutual.
Orihara Kururi & Mairu
[ ♦♦ ]Rei met the twins for the first time back when she was still in her last year of middle school and it absolutely delighted her to see the ones who so consistently seemed to wipe the smile off Izaya's face at just their meer mention. They're odd, certainly, but seeing as how Rei was kind and caring to them the first few times they met, the two adore her.
She still meets up with them occasionally, especially once they start high school at Raira. Rei's a little sad that they're growing up and going off to do their own thing, but they still make time to chat with her for which she's grateful. A part of her feels guitly for living out her big sister life vicariously through someobody else's siblings, but she barely even remembers her own brother's face at this point, so, perhaps, this is okay too. She knows they're someone else entirely, but she still wants to see them grow up safely and happily at least.
Kida Masaomi
[ ♦♦ ]Though the two started off on opposing sides of a losing war, they've long since mended those differences. It's not Rei's place to meddle in the lives of kids, especially when Kida has finally started building a new life for himself outside the world of people like her, but they still run into each other occasionally. He's fun to talk to, but Rei hopes he can stay out of trouble after everything he's been through.
Ryuugamine Mikado
[ ♦ ]Rei met Mikado on his very first night in Ikebukuro. It came as a bit of a surprise that someone like Kida had a dear friend like Mikado, but it came as even bigger a surprise when she learned of Mikado's involvement with the world of gangs and such.
She's unaware of the full extent of his reach but, as the founder of the Dollars, Mikado at least is very well-aware of her presence as one of the Dollars' figureheads.
Awakusu-kai
[ ♦ ]Rei frequently finds herself involved in jobs for the Awakusu-kai via Izaya, but occasionally they reach out to her directly. She isn't too familiar with the inner goings on of the organization, but she seemed to have reached an understanding with Shiki, who knows just the limits she isn't willing to cross and hires her services accordingly.
Rei is also familiar with the Awakusu-kai's Akabayashi who is rather pleasant company for someone in his line of work. Her contact with them frequently happens through Akabayashi in particular.
Rokujo Chikage
[ ♦ ]Rei's first meeting with the guy consisted of him looking for one Natsu no Aji to take revenge on, only to chicken out of the fight when Rei clued him in on who that actually was.
It's a shame, since he seemed like a skilled fighter and Rei would have loved to have given it a go. He's a good guy at heart, maybe, but he still rubs her completely the wrong way with his patronizing attitude.
Izumii Ran
[ ♢ ]It's almost embarrassing for Rei to think she was ever associated with that guy. Even back when she was in the Blue Squares, she didn't like Izumii at all, but she didn't involve herself too closely with the inner workings of the gang, so she could largely avoid him.
Still, she should have realized being part of a gang led by someone like Izumii was going to mean trouble no matter what. She has no interest wasting her time going after him, but if he ever showed up for some reason, there'd be hell to pay.
The Harukawa Family
[ ? ]Rei doesn't remember her childhood too well, especially because the peaceful years of it were quickly overshadowed by the frantic fear of its latter half. She barely even recalls what her dad was like, knowing only that he left her with a huge disdain for gambling persisting to this day.
She remembers her mother at least - she was a brave yet endlessly caring woman, who was forced to make the hardest choices of her life. Last Rei saw him, Hiro was still just a little kid too - he was cute, sure, but you could hardly call that 'having known him'.
In truth, Rei doesn't know if they're still alive. Her life has finally settled down enough that if she wanted to, she could try looking - with Izaya's help she knew they'd be able to track them down, even if it took time. But... she's scared. She's scared that if she finds them dead, it would truly dawn on her that she should have looked for them much sooner, that it would maybe even be her fault. What if they were still alive, but blamed her nonetheless for never helping them despite being safe and sound for years now?
It's a selfish, selfish thing for her to think, but perhaps she doesn't have things quite as sorted out as she thinks.
