Makuri Seikōjo

"Even swords can be good or evil. Some are gentle and don’t needlessly cut that which is innocent and undeserving. This one however… doesn't even know the difference between its smith's head and others."

Makuri Seikōjo (製鋼所 真栗 Seikōjo Makuri), is a Kanoe-ranked Demon Slayer of the Demon Slaying Corps. She later becomes a traveling companion of Tanjiro Kamado.

Apperance

Makuri is a young girl of average hight with light skin and a slim, but well-trained physique. Her extremely long fire-red hair has light tips and are bound to a high ponytail, her bangs being spikier than the rest. Makuri’s eyes are big and are of steel-blueish color with grey circled around the black pupil. They often appear cold at first glance, since frowning is a default expression of hers.

Makuri wears a haori of similar colors that match her eyes, the sleeves and collar being a different fabric, than the rest; light-grey with a white pebbly pattern. Underneath she wears the standart Demon Slayer uniform, which consists of a dark-brown gakuran jacket, a white belt around her waist, and baggy pants that extend into tabi socks as well as zōri, with bands of white cloth wrapped thightly around her calves.

Her Nichirin-Blade is located on the left side of her waist and is fastened with the white belt. The sheath is black with some silver-looking ornaments; the blade itself has a black ’mune’ and a beautiful silverish ’hamon’. The braiding of the handle is black and dark blue, the ’tsuba’ being similar to the blade in black and silver color. Attached to the ’kashira’ are some kind of fine strings that match the blue color of the handle.

Personality

On first glance, Makuri appears to be constantly frowning, spreading an aura that instantly can intimidate some people. She’s not interested in social interactions with other people very much and prefers to be distanced and left alone. If engaged in conversation however, the red-haired girl doesn’t mince matters, speaking up what’s on her mind, even if it might be rude or disrespectful. Being raised by a single father, who was a smith and constantly being around men of the same occupation, she actually developed quite the potty mouth that just became natural for her.

When it comes to her duties as a Demon Slayer, Makuri is very determined and straight-forward in what she does. She shows no hesitation in achieving her goals, even if it means to harm herself or destroy surroundings. Although being more the “lone wolf” type, she’s actually quite cooperative and accepts help from others, as long as they’re helpful and don’t hinder her. Makuri gets annoyed very easily, however due to her high tolerance she mostly stays calm and reserved, but when that limit is exceeded, she is able to snap instantly and become a beast.

It may be very difficult and time-consuming, but the girl is indeed capable of developing friendly feelings for others, although they won’t show very openly. But people close to her, will know the difference in her behavior. The best example is her friend, Kimura Fubuki, whom Makuri trusts enough to form a group and travel together. Together with Fubuki she later even joins Tanjiro’s group, and secretly enjoys the colorful bunch that slowly influences her to the better.

Abilities and Powers

Natural Abilities

• Enhanced Sense of Sight: Makuri has a heightened sense of sight, allowing her to see very small things very clearly, even when they’re far away. The enhanced sense of sight is also very helpful for combat, as it can help predict opponents movements and attacks, allowing Makuri to dodge more easily.

• Enhanced Strength: Thanks to the immense training she had to go through to develope and master her Breath Style, Makuri gained great strenght and overall sturdiness. The strenght helps her managing her Breath, however, it also makes it hard for her to be swift. She tries to compensate this “disadvantage” with her enhanced sense of sight.

• Swordsmithing knowledge: Since her father was a swordsmith, the girl learned a lot about swords and swordsmithing since young age. She knows exactly how to handle and take care of a blade - Nichirin Blades not being any different from normal ones - and some other basics . However, she wasn’t tought this craftsmanship directly, thus never actually forged a blade nor actually knowing how to do so from cratch.

• High heat tolerance: Makuri’s high tolerance to heat is also a result of her basically raising up in a blacksmith’s workshop, where great heat was needed to separate the steel from the ore and dirt. This ability even increased while training under her Flame Breath Master.

• Full Focus Breath Style: [TBA]

• Demon Slayer Mark: [TBA]

Swordsmanship

Breath of Steel (鋼の呼吸 Hagane no kokyū): Developed by Makuri herself, Breath of Steel is an original Breath Style that branches from the Breath of Stone and Breath of Flames. After being unable to learn those Breath Styles satisfactorily from two different masters, Makuri in her desperation and anger, created her own Breath Style that couldn’t be more fitting for her. With her knowledge of blades and steel, she is able to -literally- use the full potential of her Nichirin sword and fight demons with incredibly high power.

Trivia

800px_katana_brique_svg_by_ya_e_ddq5ezi-
  • Makuri’s surname Seikōjo (製鋼所) means "Steelworks" and is composed of:
    • Sei (製) - made
    • Hagane (鋼) - steel
    • Tokoro (所) - place
  • Makuri (真栗) is written with:
    • Shin (真) - truth, reality
    • Kuri (栗) - chestnut

  • I named her "Makuri", because it is also a blade lamination method used by swordsmiths. It's when the "Shigane" (soft steel) is completely enclosed by the "Hagane" (hard steel) - See picture to the right

  • Makuri's favorite food is Gyūdon.

  • By coincidence, the names "Makuri" and "Kimura" (@Sleepy_Saki's OC) have the same letters. (lmfao XD)

  • Despite being phisically very active, Makuri also enjoys playing traditional board games very much, such as "Go", "Shogi" and "Mahjong", in which she is very skilled.

  • Makuri's Kasugai Crow is a male "Collared Crow" (Corvus torquatus) named Goishi (碁石). She named him that, because he's black and white just like Go stones. The name literally translates into "Go stone"; Go (碁) - go, Ishi (石) - stone. Goishi is friendly, intelligent and loves Tempura.

History

Makuri grew up in a small village and was raised by a loving single father - Seikōjo Satetsu -, who earned his money by working as a blacksmith. He was very skilled in his craftsmanship, sometimes even bragged about his skills, however he mostly only crafted simple kitchen knifes, horseshoes, or pots and such. Thus, they weren’t overly wealthy, but they managed all right and the most important thing was: They were happy.

Little Makuri didn’t believe him, that he could actually craft something “cool” and more exiting than the usual boring stuff, although her father assured her that he in fact could. Being the stubborn child that she was, Makuri annoyed and mocked her father to the point that one day he gave in and showed her something he actually wanted to keep a secret: Wrapped in some old cloth and hidden in the attic of their house, the man revealed a beautiful katana, with a black sheath, decorated with silver ornaments and tsuba. The blade was a shiny black and silver and reflected the sun on its surface, that it was blinding. The little girl has never seen anything like this before and was speechless for the first time in like forever… shortly after that however, she talked her head off. What was this? Did he really make this? Why did he hide it in the attic? Why isn’t he crafting more of those and sell them? The man laughed it off and the only answer he gave his daughter was: ”I’ll tell you, when you’re older.”, which was like the standard answer when kids were asking too many questions and the adults didn’t want to answer them. Makuri was sulky, because she really wanted to know; however, a child didn’t think much of it and eventually she just relented and didn’t ask any further. Satetsu was relieved and put the katana away, not wanting to bring this topic up again very soon. Unfortunately, this little secret and his past would catch up with him much sooner than he expected…

Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. The tragedy happened on a deceptively peaceful evening, after the sun went down and everyone in the village was preparing for the night. Satetsu was about to put his daughter to sleep, when he sensed something odd… and only moments after that, the whole village was shaken from the ground up. Everyone heared a terrifying roar, like an animal’s but much much deeper and louder. The blacksmith reacted immediately by instinct, grabbed his daughter and put her into a small storage space underneath their house, which was accessible through a small hatch in the floor. This was the last time Makuri saw her father; with a terrified but also serious look on his face, demanding the little girl to stay quiet and don’t come out of this hiding place. She was way too shocked and confused to even cry or say anything, she could only stare into her father’s eyes, while he closed the hatch and left her in the dark. It wasn’t long before a deafening racket occurred, right above the little girl who was paralyzed and unable to see anything. It sounded like half of their house was wrecked, giving entrance to something incredibly big… The stomping was loud and heavy, the wooden floor creaked and seemed to barely hold the weight. In addition to it, that thing made some disturbing noises like… laughter? Giggles? Everything happened so quickly, however for Makuri it felt like an eternity. Be it from shock, from exhaustion or panic, her little body collapsed. But before that, she heared noises… her father’s screams, sinister growls and something very particular… the sound of a katana being pulled out of the sheath.

When she became conscious again, Makuri couldn’t tell how much time passed. The little girl felt cold, exhausted and frightened; and what made the situation even worse was the sound: There was no sound whatsoever. She remembered the noise before she collapsed but now, everything was dead silent. The only thing she could hear, was her own breathing and her fast heartbeat. She remembered her father telling her to stay there, but for how long? What happened? Where was he?? For about another hour, Makuri stayed quietly hidden in the storage space, but the silence remained. She was terrified, but her urge to find her father grew bigger, and eventually she slowly opened the hatch and climbed out; it was dawn. If the recent events weren’t enough for the child, she then beheld something, she could never forget for the rest of her life: On one of the still intact walls of their house, was the body of her father… a katana impaled through his torso, pinning him to the wall, hanging from the ground… blood running down.

From that day, nothing was like it used to be. Makuri was eventually found by some other villagers, traumatized and unable to even speak. The girl didn’t understand what happened, in fact, even the adults couldn’t find any good answers. Nobody who survived has seen the thing that attacked them. But there was one word that the girl overheared multiple times after she was found… ”demon”.

Eventually, a family who was close to Satetsu and lived near by took Makuri in and cared for her. It was a miracle, that the little girl survived, considering the damage that occurred on that night. Makuri changed visibly, she became repellent and very introverted. She also developed a tendency to become very angry over trifles, making it seem that she could only be one extreme of those two moods.

Two years after the incident, Makuri turning eleven, she determinedly decided to leave her village, in search for answers. The adults told her, that some animal, probably some bears attacked them that night and that it was just a tragic coincidence. Perhaps she believed that back then… but in those two years, thinking about it almost constantly, Makuri just didn’t buy that story. She remembered everything like it happened yesterday. That wasn’t a bear… how could a bear do something like this to her father using a katana? How could a bear laugh and giggle?? After returning to their house for the first time after the incident, the red-haired girl also found some old books, diaries with her father’s handwriting, which raised even more questions she needed to find the answers for. She was very thankful to the family that took her in, but she just had to go. Without anyone noticing, the girl left her home village, only taking with her some food, her father’s diaries… and the katana.

Seikōjo Satetsu • 製鋼所 砂鉄 ()

father

Until his death, Satetsu was a loving, caring and hard-working father, who did everything for his only daughter, whom he raised alone. However, the blacksmith wasn’t always as honest and truthful as he wanted others to believe; as he had some secrets he even kept hidden from his own daughter.

Apart from this, Makuri had a very close bond with her father, barely wanting to leave his side, even when he was working at the smithery. The other men were quite annoyed at first, however after they learned that Satetsu didn’t have a wife who could take care of the child, they relented and eventually they were happy having a cheerful little girl around them, who was very interested in their work.

His sudden and unfair death was a staggering blow for Makuri, who was only nine years old at this time. No day went by without her missing and thinking about her father, however those feelings, sadness, hate, rage… were the things that kept her going and kept her alive.

Kimura Fubuki • 木村 風舞季

best friend

Makuri met Fubuki during their Final Selection on Fujikasane Mountain. Being the stubborn and determined wannabe-Demon-Killer, the redhead thought she could actively seek out the demons and slay one by one; better she finds them first, than them finding her, right? This strategy did indeed work out at first, however, not caring about her wellbeing, Makuri didn’t realize how exhausted she was when she faced a huge Hand-Demon with an incredibly tough neck. On the verge of collapsing and becoming another one of the demon’s victims, a white-haired girl suddenly appeared and helped Makuri to escape, since fighting that thing wouldn’t be a good idea.

Makuri was devastated, that someone needed to help her, however she accepted it for the sake of surviving the Final Selection. It wasn’t long till the readhead could return the favour, protecting and fighting together with Fubuki until the last day of the Selection.

After they both passed the test and became real Demon Slayers, the girls ended up teaming up and traveling together. To Makuri’s surprise, Fubuki didn’t seem to have a problem with her rough behavior, potty mouth and accasional tantrums. In fact, she always stays calm and spreads a nice and serene aura that even affects the redhead in a way. Makuri enjoys the company of her new friend, because she can be herself without fearing of putting the other one off, however... it became a habit of Fubukis to regularly correct her red-haired friends enunciation.

Kamado Tanjiro • 竈門 炭治郎

friend

For Makuri it was unintelligible how a boy like Tanjiro could actually survive up to this point. In fact, she was extremely overwhelmed by his pure, kind and almost gullible nature, at first believing that he was just acting like that for some reason and trying to fool people. However, she soon realized that the boy had no ulterior motives whatsoever and despite being so friendly and caring, he also was an incredibly talented and strong swordsman who fought for the right things. This was one of the many things that led her to – together with Fubuki - join his team.

Makuri would never say it out loud, but she really admires Tanjiro’s leadership, skills and good heart, which over time slowly affected herself. With his influence, the red-haired girl started to be more open towards others and tries to not judge them instantly, remembering how wrong she was about him in the first place. Similar to Fubuki, Makuri’s behavior had no impact on Tanjiro, making it easy and comfortable for her to interact with him, which she secretly really appreciated.

Kamado Nezuko • 竈門 禰豆子

friend (?)

Their first encounter, like many others for poor Nezuko, was not a positive one, since Makuri instantly tried to kill the girl with the muzzle, after learning that she was a demon. Only the quick intervention of Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke could prevent Nezuko from being beheaded by Makuri’s katana.

The redhead simply couldn’t understand how they could just happily travel around with a demon, despite all of them being Demon Slayers. Makuri was furious, to the point that even Fubuki was quite overwhelmed since she’s never seen her friend like that before. Not even the touching story of Tanjiro trying to cure his sister who was the only survivor of his family couldn’t really warm up Makuri’s heart. She was a demon, she needed to be killed, that was their duty. The only thing that eventually let the girl falter, was Tanjiro’s question if she could just kill a family member after they became a demon. A brother, a sister or… a parent?

Makuri never gave an answer to that question, simply refused and distanced herself from that topic and also Nezuko. After some time during their travels and witnessing with her own eyes, that Nezuko really never attacked a human, Makuri slowly kind of warmed up to the demon girl, however still being alert in case something “unforeseen” happens.

Agatsuma Zenitsu • 我妻 善逸

friend

Zenitsu basically personifies every trait in a human Makuri despises. Especially since he was a boy, it was infuriating for the redhead how much of a scared, whiny and spineless coward he was, yet acting like a wannabe womanizer around girls and hitting on them on every giving chance.

It took Makuri some time to realize that there is much more potential and character hidden in him even he didn’t know he had. When push comes to shove, Zenitsu was able to be brave and valued friendship very much, which was admirable. Especially his swordsmanship was amazing, although he only could perform it while being unconscious. This however didn’t change the fact that Makuri is annoyed by the blonde most of the time, loosing her temper constantly over him and kicking his butt when she gets enough of his whining or flirting.

ddq5ekr-2cc9e81c-7b51-4d2a-a32e-b7a6b644

Hashibira Inosuke • 嘴平 伊之助

friend

Inosuke was probably the one Makuri got along the fastest, since both have similar characteristics that are quite compatible. Although being very noisy and provocative, Makuri likes the fact that Inosuke is a very proud fighter and highly values strenght. His constant attempts to instigate fights with whoever is available at the moment can get annoying sometimes, however Makuri gladly “accepts the invitation” when she feels like blowing-off some steam, thus both of them became keen sparring partners over time.

This way, the redhead also gained Inosuke’s respect, since she is a very skilled fighter and never hesitates to fight. Makuri doesn’t mind his vulgar enunciation at all, since she’s not any better than him. Fubuki doesn’t even bother correcting her friend’s enunciation when she’s talking to Inosuke, because, well… it’s Inosuke.
