Nikolai has been trained in the dark arts and other subjects his whole life, making him highly lethal and efficient at his work. He likes challenges and gets a thrill out of doing dangerous activities and, sometimes, in breaking/bending rules.
While he does his best to succeed in his mission, he sometimes get carried away doing the things he wants that can possibly compromise it out of selfish desires or simply for his own amusement.
He can be condescending. He thinks students and idealist do-gooders are pathetic, weak and full of themselves. This is due to his upbringing of never having a normal childhood and having to view the world differently from normal people in order to survive it.
One moment he'd be cool and poised and the next he can get very aggressive and murderous.
