Nova (retired)

Personality

Confident, sassy, teasing on the outside, soft, broken, scared to trust on the inside. Nova has a bad habit of suppressing her feelings, which results in her seeming uncaring and uninterested. It also means she suppressed her powers and didn't learn to control them, so when she does lose control of her emotions, her powers tend to blow up, literally. This results in her pushing people away because she doesn't want to hurt them, though she also doesn't want to be hurt by losing anyone either. If someone manages to get past her defensive shell, she is quite awkward, but very caring. She will call out her friends if they are being stupid, especially if they aren't taking care of themselves, but only because she doesn't want them getting hurt. Once you are her friend she would do anything to keep you safe. She also has a self deprecating/self hating issue because she hates her powers.

Powers

Nova can create explosions, fueled by energy stored up inside her. These explosions can range from handheld in size, to something big enough to destroy a building. She can also control already existing fire, making it bigger or smaller and keeping it from burning things, or making sure it turns something to ash. This also includes redirecting explosions she didn't cause, if it is small enough, she can just absorb it, but anything more than a little fire and she can only redirect it. Her internal body temperature is higher than a normal human's, and she can raise it even more if she wants, however if she gets too hot it will result in an explosion. Her skin is also fireproof, but her hair isn't, hence why she keeps it short. The downsides of her powers are that they are very in tune with her emotions, so it is harder to control them if she is going through emotional trauma. If she is sick/weak, her powers weaken, and if her body temperature gets too low, creating explosions gets harder. This makes water a big weakness for her, she can still create explosions if she is wet, but it is harder and if she is continually wet and cold it becomes almost possible to create any explosions. 

Backstory

"I'm sorry, you must be at least level 4 friend to unlock my tragic backstory." Is what she'd say if anyone asked about her past, even her friends probably don't know everything about her past. 

When she was only a baby, her dad left because he never really wanted a family and it was too much, so her mom raised her and her older brother, Travis, on her own for years. Until she died in an accident when Avery was 5 and Travis was 9. After that, Avery and Travis went to many different foster homes, some okay, some terrible. It wasn't ideal, but they had each other, and that was enough. Until Travis' powers manifested. No one wanted to foster a mutant, and for the first time, Avery and him were going to be separated. But Avery was not having it, begging to go with him, or run away together. A fight ensued, and emotions ran high, so high that they triggered Avery's powers - which killed Travis. 

Not knowing what to do, the 11 year old Avery ran away, not wanting to hurt anyone else with her powers. CPS occasionally found her and put her in a new home, but she'd run away as soon as she could and spent many years on the run, going by Nova instead of Avery to try and keep CPS off her back. Then one day a gang noticed her. They invited her into their gang, and she was wary but had no where else to go and they were very persuasive and soon she was hanging out with them, using her powers for them in ways that she didn't always like. But they always reassured her it was fine and she was helping and protecting them, so it was fine. Called her "fireball" most of the time instead of Nova. However, when they wanted her to use her powers on an old gang member who had left, she refused and ran away.

For a year after that, Nova ran, trying to stay away from people, but inevitably getting to know a few here and there, some nice, some not so much. Her powers continually blew up, hurting or killing friend and stranger alike. This eventually caught the attention of Charles Xavier, who sent Isaac to investigate. Nova was hostile when he found her, but after he saved her from some angry 'customers' of hers, she agreed to give it a shot. For a few months, she went to school, catching up on all of the schooling she had missed on the run, hesitantly making friends, and occasionally trying to work on her powers, but it didn't come easy. One day, she lost control of her powers, which resulted in kids avoiding her far more than before. She tried to ignore it, but it kept building until she she couldn't take it and packed up her things to run. But Isaac saw her trying to leave and talked to her, eventually she agreed to stay, as the school had grown on her and she had friends that actually seemed to like her, which was strange and scary - as almost every other person that seemed to like her ended up getting hurt by her own powers. 

Stays at school and learns how to control her powers from Isaac, whose parents ended up adopting Nova. This also results in her changing her hair, cutting off her ties to her old life and stepping into a new life. She is very protective of her friends and family and will do anything to keep them safe. Eventually, she starts working for an organization that helps foster kids on the run, mutant and human alike. She even travels to different countries to help kids all over the world, making sure they have the support and help she didn't have when she was little.
