Birchpuddle is bestfriends with Turtlepelt who doesn't appreciate her enough. Birchpuddle saw Turtlepelt save Quietwing from the river and kept her observations to herself to be nice. However, Turtlepelt never did enough to earn Birchpuddle's silence, so she eventually tells the clan when Quietwing becomes leader. The news gets spread at a Gathering which deeply unsettles the already uneasy Windclan.
Later on, Birchpuddle can tell when Turtlestar lies about Wishstar's death, so Turtlestar makes her deputy to keep her quiet.
