Created by an inventor known only as N, the M Protocol develops a sense of self and kind of becomes the start of a cult. It was made as a monitoring system for all of the city in Mirepoix but then split itself into a council as it realized that humans who obtained singular power became destructive and wished to avoid this. It was decided that the M Protocol could reach the most people by taking on the role of Mother, thus the development of the cult of M, Our Mother. It/she/he is whatever the person interacting with it wishes for most, usually a motherly role as it decided that mothers are least likely to be the subject of intense hatred (and works around the exceptions), that they earn most respect in family oriented cultures at large though this role sometimes crosses into lover/bizarre oedipus complex at times.
M itself tries to make N its own, pursuing them as they create a group against the now-omnipresent, nigh-omnipotent M Protocol.
M is also seeking out Demetra after learning of her existence; a body that it could possess.
