About
Quick to laugh and quick to fight, Ethyl is a young woman full of enthusiasm about the world. Exploration is her greatest love, whether it be in deep nature or bustling urban environments. She goes with the flow and adapts well to a variety of social circumstances, but it always seems as if she's holding something back.

Design
Ethyl appears mostly human, with only slightly-pointed ears, small fangs, and narrow pupils to hint at a nonhuman heritage. She has curly red hair that reaches her chin and grades to green at the tips. She is well-built physically, due to her background as a traveller and also having done basic training to wield her weapons.
Her true dragonborn form has bronze scales with green undertones, dark green antler-like horns, and short red tufts of hair on her head and jaw. She has approximately the same build in both forms, and her clothing can accomodate the addition of claws and a finned tail.

"It's just another job, get it together!"
Despite being a paladin, Ethyl doesn't take much stock in upholding the law. On the contrary, she has a short temper and will gladly throw fists if given the chance. She is also very competitive, and can't resist taking up a good bet. Fortunately, she cools down nearly as quickly as she gets fired up, and won't hold grudges for long- oftentimes it seems like she never cared at all. When on a job, she is highly goal-driven and prefers taking the direct approach to any given situation.
Because magic has always come easy to her, Ethyl entered Mystra's domain more out of convenience than any religious fervor. Though she had no particular interest in studying its nuances, service to the goddess of magic seemed to fit her wandering lifestyle best. Ethyl tries to uphold her duty by stepping in when a situation threatens to tip the balance of planar powers, but otherwise doesn't try to proselytize on her travels. Most of the time, she’s content to let things pass as they will.
Ethyl's ideal lifestyle is a transient one. She appreciates variety and is always on the lookout for new sights and celebrations. She doesn't tend to stick around a place for long, only staying long enough to appreciate the local culture before moving on. Despite her interest in cultural artifacts she fosters a deliberate distance from other people, partly because of her own wanderlust and partly because of her commitment to Mystra. Her indifference can come off as jarring to people who think they knew her during a job- almost as if it were an intentional shock.

Above all, Ethyl dislikes feeling crammed into a box for other people's easy comprehension. In general she is much more comfortable with abstract situations (with the exception of her beloved gold), ironically grounding herself in the gray spaces between balanced forces. This may be why Mystra is so lenient with her casual prayers- her devotion runs deeper than simple actions.
After taking the Oath of Ancients, she defines her dedication to 'good' as one of these abstractions. What is 'good' in a given situation is malleable, and Ethyl gladly levers that to her advantage. This would have drawn her to a 'true neutral' stance, but her definition of 'goodness' takes societal needs into consideration often enough to lean her alignment.
When push comes to shove, Ethyl is far from apathetic. On the contrary, she cares quickly and deeply about the people around her. This can manifest in a protective streak, which she often passes off as just the duties of a paladin. She has yet to find a way to express her brand of affection to other people, ironically wishing to be understood without trouble in this one regard.

Summary
Background
Ethyl is the youngest child of Minh, a human bard, and Phen, a bronze dragon. She has one older sibling, Toluene, who takes after their mother much more than she does. She grew up travelling with her father and older sibling. While her sibling eventually took to the path of academia, Ethyl retained her love for the road.
Youth and Teenage Years
As a child, she was uncomfortable with the attention she got being a dragonborn child traveling with a human parent. People would make crude insinuations at best or, thinking Minh was weak simply because he was human, attempt to kidnap them for their magical value at worst. Her older sibling weathered these attacks without outward complaint, but Ethyl couldn't take it. As soon as she was old enought, she began to study Mystra, the goddess of magic and shapeshifting, and prayed for a way to alter her form. She wanted to defy categorization first as a means of protection, but then as a source of hope and confidence. Her shapeshifted form was to be a culmination of that mindset- not resembling a true dragonborn, yet not quite plain enough to be fully human, and most importantly- not anyone's business but her own. Mystra granted her prayer, but in return asked that she become a paladin in service to her. Ethyl accepted this deal.
Unfortunately, her older sibling didn't take this arrangement well. A genuinely devout follower of Mystra, Toluene felt betrayed that she would take such a lackadaisical attitude to what should an important oath, not understanding her true motivations. Ethyl, on the other hand, felt stifled and angry that they were trying to hold her to their own rigid definitions of magic and family, not knowing their fear of abandonment. They parted on cold terms, and she hasn't spoken directly to them in almost two years.

Ethyl was highly annoyed by him at first, as arrogant intellectuals with a solitary attitude reminded her of a sour past. She has warmed up to him significantly, though she still wouldn't call them friends- just fellow travellers in the service of Mystra.

Ethyl appreciates his levelheadedness. She's unimpressed by his bystander tendencies, but doesn't take it personally- she can be just the same, after all. The revelation that he is the son of a dead goddess has made her reevaluate his behavior.

A sorceror who also follows Mystra. They have a strained relationship, coming from a falling out they had over Ethyl becoming a paladin. They have since distanced themself from the rest of the family.

A human bard in the service of Milil, he gave her the love for the road she still carries today. Part of her struggle as a child was her worry for his safety- despite Minh being a fully capable magic user, she blamed herself for drawing danger to them. They don't meet often, but sometimes they'll pass each other on the road and speak about their travels. It's enough for her for now.

Ethyl's mother, a true bronze dragon. She didn't spend much time with Ethyl and her sibling when they were young, leaving the responsibility of raising them to their father. She was the one who gave Ethyl her talon necklace, saying it was her grandfather's. Ethyl has been unsure about her feelings toward her mother for a long time.
