Roscoe Callahan

Roscoe was raised in a small, village, closely knit together by shared religion. He found common ground and community among his peers, in religious schooling and church groups. As he grew older, he began to feel himself drifting from his peers and didn't take much interest in dating, feeling no attraction towards women (same sex attraction obviously not super encouraged here) He instead pursued more education in religion, and eventually entered into the priesthood. 

As a priest, he was well liked by his community, and his mother was very proud of him. He watched his peers grow up and fall in love, get married and start families. Soon, he started feeling empty with just the church to fill him. He began drinking in his downtime in attempt to ignore his loneliness, and in a way, self medicate. Around age 29, he confided (drunkenly) in a Harvey, an outsider. about his loneliness and jealousy towards his old friends who'd been able to fall in love and start families and kind of let slip that he was interested, romantically, in that friend. Luckily, his feelings were reciprocated and they began a secret relationship. So, things were good for a while. 

He was happy even if he had to live the happiest part of his life in secret. He gave up drinking and the next 6 or so years went pretty great for him. His sermons were filled with passion and he felt he understood his lord's love again. Then, on a winter's night, preparing for a big holiday sermon he'd planned, he stayed late in his study. He slept there, and was awoken near dawn, by the sound of screams and panicked animals coming from the town. Immediately, he rushed from his study to find the town center burning and the fire spreading fast. He searched the town for survivors to find almost immediately, that Harvey had been killed and his mother had also perished. 

The remaining townsfolk looked to him for reassurance, asking why god would allow such a thing. He became hopelessly depressed and a week later, traveled alone to a bridge outside of town, where he intended to commit suicide. 

At this time, a voice spoke to him in a language he'd never heard before, but somehow understood. There was a bright light and in it he saw a figure, something he could never really understand, much less describe. The voice told him, a message from his lord, that he could not take his own life, but instead should avenge his loved ones, in the name of the lord. So he didn't jump. But he didn't return home either. 

He quit the priesthood and left. He soon realized he would need money to support himself now and began using the powers his God had given him as special effects in a fake street sermon. He met Olive as the two were passing through Arogem, Olive planning to con him but it failed, and the next morning, Olive realized that the man he tried to con was a con-man himself. Together, the two decided they could probably make more money than on their own, and began running what eventually became referred to as “the Sunday Hustle”,  a ridiculous street sermon with magical special effects and roughly two faith healings each week. Things carried on like this until Olive received a strange and obviously fradulent letter luring them to a fake funeral in the Starfall region
