In the Wastelanders universe, Hazel was tricked into becoming a metal virus test subject. With Dr. Sombra's collaboration, she was able to enhance Dr. Robotnik's regular metal virus formula into what they call "Metal Virus X". Instead of turning organic beings into thoughtless zombots, this version is far more suitable for capturing subjects to build the TBN army of cyborgs. It is not meant to infect and spread its disease like it's original counterpart, but that doesn't make it any less deadly. Hazel's body is covered in a strange metallic liquid, utilizing her original organic body as a vessel to keep it alive. She can harden and liquify herself at will, allowing her to shapeshift her form to accommodate specific needs.
