About

Carman was one of the first settlers of Ireland, a humble young girl who quickly became enamored with the dark secrets hidden away in the forest. Horribly naïve and yet unscathed by harsh reality, she was quickly swept up by Torryn, an ancient Gaelic death god, and fell in love with him. Her hunger for knowledge intrigued him, and so he offered her power beyond her imagination in exchange for her soul. She accepted, and lost every last bit of humanity that made her, well, human. Torryn, having gotten what he wanted from her, left her in the Wilderlands to rot and was never seen again.

Fast forward several hundred years. Carman became an emissary for the Court of Shadows, and was basically King Bran's (Morrigan's father) lackey. This lowly position, coupled with her more human-like appearance, made her the subject of ridicule in the Court as she was not High Fae, or even Faerin at all. She had no true sense of belonging, and it infuriated her. Carman brought this up to Bran, asking him for a more elevated status within his Court, for access to the forbidden libraries to further her craft. He only laughed at her, belittling the witch in front of the entire Court. Carman then killed his wife, Sabina, in retaliation. Infuriated, Bran sentenced her to the Wilderlands to live submerged beneath the earth for the rest of time.

Shortly after Morrigan was named King after his father's death, he received a prophecy of Carman returning to the Court of Shadows, digging herself up out of the ground and seeking vengeance on all of those who wronged her. She took her revenge on Torryn and made a beeline for the Shadow Court, eager to destroy everyone in it. Desperate to prevent this from happening, Morrigan and his twin sister Neamhain concocted a plan to stop her by sending her essence into the body of a brain-dead Faery, using the potent, willingly-given blood of an O'Connor retrieved years ago. This plan backfired when their younger sister Macha interfered, and Carman was trapped in her body instead. Unable to do magick lest she break Macha's body like porcelain, Carman used the last few moments of her freedom to bind Morrigan in servitude to Maeve and banish Neamhain to the Wilderlands.
