"Life is too short to be consumed by fear and regret"

about

He who values achievement over comfort would not hesitate to widen his horizons, even when it means putting his life in danger.

With his unrivaled power and his heart set on protecting the art of words, he lives up to his name as Fukuoka's gifted alchemist. A true genius who has immense knowledge of literature, is quick at improvising and always aims for the top. However, his reckless behaviour and risk-taking nature make the worst combination as he is always causing trouble for everyone.

Often mixes up English with Japanese as he's been an overseas student for too long. Has poor eyesight so he's almost never seen without his glasses. Would skip his meals for snacks. Likes pudding and ramen eggs.

the last record

Also known as The Requiem for the Wandering Writers - named by Jacqueline Barker-Minamoto.

description

The only one of its kind, this unique weapon was crafted and then utilized by Yukito after an incident that rendered him unable to wield his sword. Enthusiastic about preserving the art of literature, throughout the years of being the librarian of Fukuoka Library, Yukito had been collecting every single piece of works written by the writers. This included unnamed poems, unfinished stories, even all 100-score tests the writers had when they were students. All these little pieces of paper was reassembled and bound into one little notebook. Yukito named this notebook “The Last Records”, though a colleague and a friend of his, Jacqueline Barker-Minamoto, gave another name, “The Requiem for the Wandering Writers”. Yukito approved of this name, though he still personally uses the name he gave.

abilities

Though The Last Records looks like a notebook, it doesn’t primarily function as one. Instead, it functions as the housing of his purifying magic, as well as the tool for technique deployment. Yukito’s deploying method of choice is paper plane, since during the time he stayed in infirmary for recovery after the incident, folding paper plane was his only hobby and later one of his masteries. Each piece of paper contains a certain amount of Yukito’s magical energy and writer’s soul energy combined. These will then be folded into planes and deployed like combat aircrafts, such as bombers or fighters. The paper planes is capable of dropping or shooting purifying energy bombs and bullets on Yukito’s telepathic commands, making it efficient in purifying Taints – the corrupted souls, the main enemies in Yukito’s world.

There are occasions, however, where Yukito’s purifying magic has effect on physical entities, since his magic is a combination of spiritual energy (pure magic) and physical energy (Yukito’s stamina, which has all properties of real-life conventional energy). In these occasions, the purifying magic is capable of breaking, burning and so on.

Different techniques deploy different types of planes for different purposes. One interesting thing is that Yukito names all of his techniques after combat aircrafts in World War II (in reality), stating “they sound cooler that way”.

To deploy a paper plane, Yukito must take out a paper sheet, fold it into a plane, cast the spell for the desired technique, and then use the spine of the notebook as the flight deck to launch the plane. The plane stores a certain amount of purifying energy and follows Yukito’s commands via telepathy. The launch and the control can be quite stamina-draining, so the number of planes that can engage in combat at the same time is limited by how much Yukito can hold it. The planes can be destroyed in battle or retrieved after the battle. When Yukito retrieves them, he can absorb the energy back into his body, regenerating for a little bit.

Different techniques will have different costs on Yukito’s stamina, some can even be life-threatening. Below is the list of the techniques with detailed description.

1. standard technique: zero

Named after one of the most known fighter aircraft in World War II, the Mitsubishi A6M “Zero”, this is an essential technique of Yukito in every battle. Quick deployment, fast reloading and low stamina cost are the advantages that made this technique a must in a battle. The energy bullets shot from this type of plane can quickly purify small and weak Taints, though they are ineffective against stronger ones. These are the go-to when Yukito needs to clear a huge mob of weaklings.

2. standard technique: val

Along with Zero, Val is an effective technique in clearing mobs. This technique is named after the Allied codename for Aichi D3A, known as Type 99 Dive Bomber, the famous dive bomber of IJN that got their action in almost all battles, including the legendary attack on Pearl Harbor. This type of plane requires longer deployment and cannot be launched in quick succession, but in return it can carry out a much larger damage. Equipped with a payload of purifying energy bombs, the plane can take down bigger and slower targets, usually a boss Taint. This technique is easy to use, but can empty Yukito’s strength pretty quickly if used without caution. Usually there has to be someone there to look after Yukito, in case he gets too caught up in the heat of the battle.

3. standard technique: jake

Unlike the other standard techniques this technique is used for reconnaissance, living up to its inspiration, the Aichi E13A long-range reconnaissance seaplane. This type of plane has no ammunition, but instead a huge fuel tank to support its extra-long flight. The energy used for the plane is also packed up really tight, minimizing its energy signal for undetected operation. The plane can cover a huge area on the battlefield, giving basic information about the enemies to Yukito via telepathic feedback. This technique requires the least amount of concentration, making it the safest among the techniques.

4. advanced technique: mighty gale

This technique can be seen as the upgraded version of the technique Zero, just like in real life the Mitsubishi A7M Reppuu is the successor to the A6M Zero. Compared with Zero, this technique is more powerful in all aspects, from maneuverability to ammunition. Furthermore, the energy bullets shot from this plane has an armor-piercing effect, which means they can hit and purify up to two Taints on their way. This effect is achieved by designing a two-layer energy package, with the outer layer hitting the first target and then being consumed, revealing the inner layer keeping on the original trajectory and capable of hitting a second target. Due to this intricate design, this technique cannot be easily cast and requires a substantial amount of strength and focus. To use this technique, normally Yukito would have to find a designated safe spot so that he can finish the casting without interruption.

5. advanced technique: shooting star

The history behind the name of this technique is quite interesting. This technique is inspired by the Yokosuka D4Y Suisei dive bomber, but instead of naming the technique Comet as the word Suisei suggests, Yukito changed it to Shooting Star. Coincidentally, this name is the same as the Aichi B7A Ryuusei torpedo bomber, creating confusion of which one is the actual inspiration. But since both types of plane are powerful bombers, the ambiguity is accepted this time.

As the name suggests, this technique bears several resemblances to a  shooting star. Instead of dropping heavy energy bombs like a normal  bomber, this type of plane can actually “shoot” energy bombs. They are  equipped with a bomb propeller, capable of shooting small,  high-explosive energy bombs towards the enemies. The lack of high blast  damage on impact is compensated by the devastating burning damage. Once  exploded, these bombs will spread a huge, hard-to-extinguish fire of  purifying magic. It will stay on and keep burning until there’s nothing  left. Due to the nature of this technique, it requires a considerable  amount of energy to be condensed into small projectiles. Thus, in order  to cast, Yukito has to stay focused for a period time, and during the  process he becomes vulnerable. Covering is necessary.

6. advanced technique: auspicious clouds

This technique is named after Yokosuka R2Y2 Keiun Kai, a turbojet-powered bomber that was proposed to be a development from the prototype reconnaissance aircraft Yokosuka R2Y Keiun but never constructed during World War II. Though there is the word “auspicious” in its name, this technique brings nothing but bad luck to the enemies. This technique stands out from the other advanced ones thanks to the introduction of “metabolized” energy. Similar to a turbojet-powered aircraft, the planes of this technique propel air heated by magical energy backwards to provide thrust. The air in front would be taken in, compressed and heated up by magical energy, which acts like a burning fuel, and then exhausted to the back. But, since the air is heated up by purifying magical energy, the exhaust gains some of the purifying property and an enhanced form of the burning property. The result is that when these planes fly, they leave a shiny reddish smoke trail behind, and whatever touches this trail would be ignited and purified within seconds (Yukito doesn’t know for sure why the trail is red, but since his usual magic has the color royal blue, he theorizes that the reddish color indicates a more pure destructive side of his magic coming out from hiding). This technique requires an enormous amount of energy to heat the air, so it could drain Yukito’s stamina really fast, but using it for merely a minute should be more than enough to burn all the enemies in the field.

7. special technique: soaring into the cloudless sky

This technique is inspired by the transport variant of the flying boat Kawanishi H8K – H8K2-L Seikuu, Model 32. The name is simply an overelaboration of the original’s name Seikuu, which means “Clear Sky”. Just like the H8K2-L, this technique provides a giant paper plane that can carry up to five people for fast and convenient transportation. It is not usually used for emergency situations such as evacuation or escape however, because the summoning would take too much time. Furthermore, this plane also provides some levels of defense in the form of force field: an invisible energy sphere covering the entire plane and the passengers on it, burning any incoming attack upon contact. This defense is not absolute though; powerful enough attacks can still penetrate the shield.

8. special technique: the heavenly river of a thousand stars

This technique is named after the Yokosuka P1Y Ginga (which means “Galaxy”), a land-based aircraft in World War II. As the origin suggested, this technique is land-based. To perform the technique, Yukito launches a total of twenty four paper planes into the sky. Each plane is equipped with a fast-reloading energy machine gun and a real-time synchronized location tracker. These planes will occupy designated positions in the sky, forming a network dome covering a large area. The planes operate in a hive mind manner, which means they can work in sync as if they are one. This technique allows Yukito to achieve nigh-perfect air supremacy, as the vicinity within the dome is completely monitored. Any flying threat can be detected and neutralized within second. Any attempt at taking down the network by destroying one of the planes is futile, as the system can reinforce the missing link with the neighboring planes, while sending another plane from the source to cover the gap. It requires a tremendous effort to breach this technique, but it also takes a tremendous effort to maintain this technique. Usually, Yukito only uses this technique when he finds himself no longer able to engage in combat and choose to take the supporting position. Stamina draining is another issue that can put Yukito’s life at risk if this technique is being used for too long.

*variation: aurora borealis - the light of northern sky

This variation is named after the night-fighter version of Yokosuka P1Y Ginga, P1Y2-S Kyokko (“Aurora”). The nickname “the Light of Northern Sky” always makes writer Kitahara Hakushuu speechless for a few seconds, somehow. It is remodeled from the original technique to fit in night battles or battles with hindered vision. Focusing on detection at the cost of much weaker firing, this technique can provide Yukito a much better view of the battlefield, help him gains a huge advantage in combat.

9. final words: protocol kisaragi

“The art of words is the most treasured magic in this world. I will protect it at any cost. Even if it means I have to sacrifice my life, it is just a small price to pay.” – Kisaragi Yukito

Technically, this should not be called a technique, as this merely is the last resort of Yukito when he gets desperate. The use of this skill usually costs his life, so he forbidden by his sensei Kitahara Hakushuu to use it. Nevertheless, there were occasions where he still used the skill, and it was a miracle that he somehow got out of all those death penalties. To cast this skill, he must use blood to draw a seal on the ground, then cite the incantation. When the last line is shouted out loud (“Protocol Kisaragi, activated!”), the seal is bound and release full effect. This skill, in essential, converts all of his biological energy (stored in the ATPs inside his body) into thermal energy and combines it with his purifying magical energy. The result is that a giant bluish white flame will engulf his whole body and then burst everywhere. This fire can instantly incinerate anything it contacts and wash out all corrupted energy. This fire can last for minutes, creating and maintaining a Taint-free area. The inevitable side effect of this skill is Yukito losing all of his energy and his body can actually die due to exhaustion. If used in battle, it certainly guarantees a win, but the cost would be too high (not too high in Yukito’s perspectives though). Since the conceptualization and then the creation of this skill, writer Kitahara Hakushuu is deeply concerned with Yukito’s self-destructive side surfacing and taking over his little librarian. That’s why he never stops warning Yukito against using this skill, or even thinking about using it. But, as a stubborn child he is, Yukito still used it.

fragments of the past

Yukito is the descendant of the Kisaragi clan, a family well-known for having talented alchemists. As the only child, he was deeply loved by his parents who gave him all the opportunities to develop his abilities.

When Yukito was 11, he became the target of his relatives who wanted to give him to the research center. In order to protect Yukito, his parents sent him to Australia to avoid being targeted. However, when Yukito was in his freshman year, his whereabouts was discovered by people from the research center and he was once almost kidnapped. Knowing that Australia is no longer safe, Yukito's parents took him home and entrusted him to the chief librarian while they're forced to live away from their son.

At the beginning, Yukito lived under the roof of the National Library as a trainee librarian as arranged by his parents. As he was immersed in literature and learned about the alchemist system, he soon realized that he wanted to put his special abilities to use by becoming an alchemist.
