A brief look at Feathercloak lore...

Feathercloaks are an intelligent canine-like species that are considered mythological in the modern world. Their kind are extremely rare to find in the wild, and are usually only found within Mage strongholds or sanctuaries. Most were rescued during the "Mage Migration" in an effort to preserve and protect creatures that were being hunted into near extinction. Now Feathercloaks are nothing more than fantasy creatures like dragons and unicorns in the modern era.

Feathercloaks, as well as a few select other species, originate from another planet or realm. Their world has various natural portals that allow travel to and from other worlds and universes. The Feathercloaks of this universe had traveled through such a portal, and made a new home on earth.

Feathercloak masks are air tight against the upper half of their muzzle, and cover the hollow area in their heads where their Soul Stones and poisonous gas resides. Soul Stones are magical , contain powers, allow the Featherclaok to see, communicate, and survive. These stones are highly sought after, and were one of the reasons Featherclaoks were hunted to near extinction. When their masks are forcibly removed, they emit a poisonous gas that is deadly for humans and other beings. Cloaks may live without their masks, but if their Soul Stones are taken, they will die.

Feathercloaks will sometimes bark to communicate, but most often they will communicate telepathically. They contact each other telepathically for more complex conversation. Puppincloaks, who lack the powers of their ancestral cousins, communicate out loud with a more complex language.

The Guardian and the Overseer

Feathercloaks have their own set of deities. These beings created the first Feathercloaks and Legendaries, and are essentially gods on the Feathercloak home world.

.
The Overseer of Death is an amoral being that dislikes humans. He is neither good, nor evil. His gift to feathercloaks was the toxic mist to help ward off other beings. He is responsible for giving the Original Cloaks the ability to create natural disasters, disease and destruction, and other harmful powers. He controls and is associated with shadows and fire.

When a Cloak becomes cursed, they become bound to him. The eyes of their mask will fully open, letting their toxic mist leak out. They grow claws, will be given new powers, will physically change, and will gain a human form. They will generally have a negative impact on others.

The Guardian of Life is a good being. Her gift to Feathercloaks was the ivory masks that protect their souls. She is responsible for giving the original Cloaks positive powers over natural events, such as healing, rain in a drought, warmth in the cold, etc. When Cloaks die, she takes the souls of those who choose to stay with her to the Celestial Plain. She controls and is associated with light and water.

When a Cloak becomes blessed, the eyes of their mask fully open and the soul stone becomes visible with no toxic mist being spilled. They may be given a celestial scarf, are given new powers, will physically change, and will gain a human form. They will generally have a positive impact on others.
