Delta was a soldier in Coral’s army, but after a nasty fight with another dragon (haven’t decided which other tribe yet), she had to have both her wings amputated and was given an honorary discharge from the military.

I’m sorry? Did I say honorary discharge? I mean after she was mortally wounded, she was no longer of use to Shark, the Queen...or anybody for that matter.

Despite claiming she could still be of use, maybe as some sort of ground support, her troop leader denied her reentry into the army, claiming it was for Delta’s own good. When she went to take the matter to the Queen’s brother, Shark made a snarky remark that they didn’t need a crawling, wingless wyrm to slow them down during a battle. When she tried to take her problem to the Queen herself, she was denied council again, and again, and again.

Abandoned by her fellow soldiers, scorned, mocked, and pitied for her devastating appearance by everyone else, Delta grew angry and resentful.

How dare the Queen force her to fight, use her as a pawn while she sits safely in her Summer Palace, and then when Delta was finally worn down, toss her away like she was trash. Well, if the Queen believed Delta to be trash, then the Queendom didn’t need her anymore. Delta sure as hell didn’t need them.

Once her wing wounds healed, Delta swam off into the night. Coral was no queen of hers. And no one else will be the queen of her ever again.

It was a long trip, but Delta finally swam from the Deep Palace to a multi-tribe island hidden within the Bay of a Thousand Scales. She had only been to this place a few times as a trainee, but she remembered the way well. After resting, she found a job on Captain Blackfin’s ship. Blackfin quickly took a liking to Delta, as the two shared a similar backstory: wounded in the war and abandoned by the Queendom they fought for (both Coral, or Coral’s mother in Blackfin’s case). It didn’t take long before Delta rose in the ranks and became Blackfin’s first mate. And when Blackfin died during a battle with another pirate crew, Delta was crowned captain.

The battle also cost the lives of quite a few crew members. The only survivors of the battle being Delta herself, Macaw (Sky/Rain hybrid), Peat (Sand/Mud), and Lichen (Ice/Sky).

When the war ended, they gained three new crew members: Scald, a SeaWing/SkyWing hybrid who quickly gained Delta’s affection and became her first mate and girlfriend; Jackal, a SandWing who also defected and wanted to find a new life; and, a few months later: Ragworm, an old SeaWing/HiveWing drunk they picked up on a tiny island far off at sea.

Delta and her crew sail the oceans of Pyrrhia (not so much Pantala), finding treasure, battling other pirates, looting scavenger pirate ships, and getting into skirmishes with army fleets if they ever chance upon each other.
