Ichirou was quite deprived of affection as a child. This doesn't mean that he didn't get attention from his parents, though. Not even close. In fact, his parents were eagles, hovering over him at every moment and making sure he never stepped out of line. They were the typical Asian parents, who expected perfect results in everything and never said they were proud of their kid because they were "saving it" for when he deserved it. A lot of Ichirou's classmates had the same kind of family dynamic, so he made friends quite easily and kept them all throughout elementary school. These friends helped lighten some of the pressure he received from his parents. However, even then the stress proved to be too much. In the first year of middle school, he began to take his freedom back, starting by dyeing his hair the bright yellow it is today. His parents were horrified to say the least, and when they realized he would never go back to being the quiet, obedient kid they raised, they sent him to go live with his aunt because there's no way they could have such an animal in their home. This only added to Ichirou's inner turmoil. His middle school years were quite rough, often getting into fights and causing trouble in the neighbourhood. He found himself in the principal's office so often that it became his second home.
Everything changed when high school rolled around. His aunt truly loved him and wanted him to be happy, so Ichirou was able to choose his own high school. At first, he really didn't care where he went, he just wanted to get it done with, but then he found Natsugaoka High. It wasn't the academics or the location that really drew him in, it was the surfing club. He had always dreamed of becoming a cool surfer boy and decided now was his chance to make it a reality. It turned out to be quite a good choice, because it was at this high school that he met Hisoka, Hoshiko, and Natsumi. This group of friends actually began to steer him in the right direction and allowed him to make a positive turn in his life. He began to enjoy school again and he realized that he was quite intelligent if he tried. He was thrilled at this discovery, and his aunt was even more so. Even though he fixed his behaviour, his aunt never sent him back to his parents. She knew that they were the reason he spiraled out of control in the first place and she never wanted that to happen to him again. Meanwhile, Ichirou got closer and closer to a particular member of his friend group: Natsumi. The two of them were constantly bickering like an old married couple, but Ichirou found it really funny. Despite their differences, he felt the closest to her.
Fast forward a couple years, and they had all graduated and were off on their own paths. Ichirou was hired by his aunt's friend as an assistant private investigator. He didn't go off to university because his aunt didn't have the funds to support him and, in all honesty, he was okay with that. He was glad to be able to begin working and paying her back for her hospitality so quickly. His life was quite content, except for the fact that he had no friends. He did feel quite lonely at times, but it wasn't until he reconnected with Natsumi again that he realized how prominent that loneliness really was. He bumped into her on the streets by some miraculous miracle and the two of them immediately returned to the same closeness that they had in high school. After a few days of catching up, Natsumi offered Ichirou a job as her personal bodyguard, and the rest is history.
