Introduction

"Both mathematics and art are the languages of God."

Adem is a mathematics lecturer teaching at the University of Crynaria. He is one of the playable characters of The Tin Jubilee, along with his colleagues Alison Cantor and Frances D Sutherland. An expatriate from the Ottoman Empire, Adem has lived in Dristol for the past decade or so, and the responsibility of halting a plot against the monarch of the nation he resides in has fallen into his and his colleagues’ hands. He resides in central Crynaria with his wife Gizem and their two children Ahmet and Bilge.

He serves as the fighter in the party, specialising in short-range and long-range combat. His fighting style is based on self-defence techniques common in the 1900s. In addition, his unassuming nature and status as a newcomer allow him to gather information from others without arousing suspicion.

He has democratic leanings and will convince the party to side with the pro-democracy revolutionary group.

Appearance

"Looks may pass, but wisdom remains."

Adem is a middle-aged man of average height and build. He has short brown hair (with two strands of hair sticking out), brown eyes, fair skin, a mole on his bottom left cheek, and a moustache. He wears clothing commonly worn by men in the 1900s, and his most frequent attire consists of a dark suit and waistcoat, a white shirt with a tall starched detachable collar, and a narrow blue-grey necktie. He is always seen wearing oval-shaped, wire-framed spectacles.

Like the rest of the party, his attire can change depending on the situation. He wears a dark grey Chesterfield coat over his clothes in particularly cold weather; a light brown Norfolk jacket in outdoor settings; and a dark frock coat and top hat in formal settings.

Personality

"It is better to observe in silence than to speak needlessly."

Adem is reticent and withdrawn, preferring to sit and ruminate in his thoughts than to interact with others. He can be absent-minded, often disregarding his surroundings. At the same time, he is highly logical and averse to making emotional decisions. However, he is quite anxious, and sometimes lets his fears override his sense of reason. He is also deeply passionate and outspoken about the causes he believes in, and is easily moved by art.

History

Early history

"A childhood in a period of crisis."

Adem was born on the 1st of March, 1860, in the town of Adapazarı. He was raised in a lower-middle-class family. His father was a member of the Ottoman Imperial Army and he was expected to follow in his footsteps along with his three elder brothers. However, he was a rather sickly youth, and he found interest in the arts and mathematics instead. He witnessed his nation’s political and economic instability as he grew up, which worried him greatly. After leaving school, he served in the army for several years. He then lived with his eldest brother Tamaydın and studied mathematics at a university abroad.

Relocation to Dristol

"Colder, yet freer pastures."

After completing his education, he returned to the Ottoman Empire (specifically Constantinople) for work. He met his wife Gizem Özgül, and they had two children: Ahmet, born 1892, and Bilge, born 1896. He grew dissatisfied with the conditions there and became critical of the current sultan’s, Abdul Hamid II, rule. Because of that, he decided to move to Dristol with Gizem and their children sometime in 1897. They lived in Rexford, where Adem was employed as a mathematics teacher at Redwood College and Gizem worked as an engineer.

Academic career

"Comfortably living in polite society."

In 1898, Adem became a lecturer at the University of Crynaria. As a result, he moved to Crynaria with his family and settled there for the next several years. He became acquainted with the locals and the rest of the faculty. He also befriended his colleagues, Alison Cantor and Frances D Sutherland. They spent time together after work, and their families also became close.

The three friends overheard a plot to overthrow the king on one fateful day nearing the end of the 1906 Michaelmas term and decided to interfere, kickstarting the plot of The Tin Jubilee.

Stats, Abilities, & Moveset

Adem’s combat abilities are a result of his experience in the military. He utilises simple, yet hard-hitting attacks, using conventional weapons. He has the weakest defence skill in the party and a mediocre HP pool of about 500. In addition, he is unable to swim.

His non-gameplay skills are mostly intellectual. As befitting of his profession, he can perform calculations quickly and think logically. He is also a polyglot; his first language is Turkish, his second language is Arabic, and he speaks fluent French and intermediate-level English. He is well-versed in the arts owing to his interest in the subject.

He receives a buff after drinking caffeine and a special debuff in the presence of fish.

"A calculated attack is an effective attack."

Angled Uppercut

Adem’s primary mode of attack is through bare-knuckled boxing. He focuses on striking his opponents and grappling them into submission. Each hit can net about 5 to 20 points of HP damage, which can be enhanced using hand wraps and brass knuckles.

Estimate Target Range

Adem always carries a pistol (barring a few exceptions) and uses it for targeted long-range attacks. While damage can vary depending on the type of pistol used, the default amount of damage ranges from 20 to 50 HP depending on accuracy.

Canne de Combat

Adem also uses a walking cane to deliver short-range attacks. His attacks are based on the Vigny cane fighting system. This attack serves as both an offence and a defence move. Each hit can deal 18 to 32 points of HP damage at its default state.

Relationships

Colleague / party member

"An aloof and enigmatic individual."

Adem sees Alison as somewhat of a kindred spirit, though their mysterious background and suspiciously youthful looks elude him. He also deems a few of their mannerisms puzzling and their habit of poking fun at him irritating. Nevertheless, he views them as his best friend and honorary family member.

Colleague / party member

"A spirited (and strict) young lady."

Initially intimidated by Fanny’s outgoing, outspoken nature, Adem eventually appreciates her intelligence, ambition and drive. His feelings of intimidation remain, yet he views her as a close friend. Their relationship is one of mutual admiration and respect despite her being much younger than he is.

Wife

"Our love is divine."

Adem is madly in love with Gizem and would do anything for her. She was one of the few people who could outsmart him, which attracted him to her. He married her despite opposition from both their families. Her warm and inviting nature has helped him break out of his shell and adjust to his new life.
