Profile
Quinn O'Staile is a male human of traceable Irish descent, born on the industrial hive world Ostrava. While most of his many siblings quit after high school to help out with their parents' asteroid mining business, Quinn's aptitude scores were high enough to land him a shot at a university degree. Unfortunately, he ended up at one of Blackhall's now infamous Budget Universities: accommodations were shoddy, conditions were hazardous, and ethical standards were nonexistent. On many occasions, Quinn was exposed to toxic chemicals, strange radiation, or alien parasites; through which he learned he had a rare genetic condition called Vorhauer Syndrome, causing his body to soak up and adapt to harmful substances. The good news was that he didn't die from any of these accidents.
The bad news was that he had been exposed to so many toxins, that his body had mutated into a walking biohazard. This locked him out of most of the career opportunities his degree might have landed him, and he ended up settling for the thankless job of an independent salvager - also known as a "Scrapjacker". It's the perfect career for someone who can't have a public life, with long stretches of time spent alone in the far reaches of the void. And as a plus, his condition lets him take on jobs even the most well-equipped corporations won't consider: deep inside radioactive nebulae, polluted ancient ruins, or interstellar chemical spills. Of course, there's other dangers lurking out there that his mutations can't save him from, but no one ever got rich without taking risks. Right?
Physical Appearance
When in his suit - which he's required by galactic regulation to wear at all times - there doesn't seem to be anything too out of the ordinary about Quinn. He is of fairly average height and weight, with about the muscle mass you'd expect of someone in his line of work. His long auburn hair and bright hazel eyes might not be as common, but it's still nothing you wouldn't expect to see on a human. His suit is of a fairly standard 26th century design, thick enough for short extravehicular activities, but thin enough to be comfortable inside a ship, too. It has been modified, however: the entire suit has a double layer of radiation insulation, which makes it quite sweltering on the inside. The reason, of course, is that his body is severely mutated. Without the suit, his mere presence sets off Geiger counters. His skin is covered in splotchy radiation burns. His saliva is numbing to the touch, and his blood corrodes right through softer metals!
