Personality

Can be outspoken when around people they trust, but quiet around people they don’t. Is very friendly, but often says the wrong thing without knowing it. Will apologize when brought up.

They're very sensitive and cry a lot.

Hates confrontation to the point where they'd rather avoid it altogether.

They suffer from frequent panic attacks and bouts of depression.

Socially awkward, often in their own little world.

Appearance

Short with messy hair and rectangular glasses. Thin frame. Always has bags under eyes. Can wear a variety of outfits such as baggy shirts and cargo pants/shorts, but prefers to wander around in a black and grey striped turtleneck and black pants. They feel this outfit helps them blend into the background, afraid of drawing attention and accidentally revealing they're a Puppeteer.

At home their outfits are more colorful and kidcore. They have a lot of animal themes clothes. Some of their favorites include a shark kigurumi, cat paw socks, and dinosaur hoodie complete with tail. They would never dream of wearing them in public, afraid of drawing any attention to themselves.

Relationships

When they first arrived, they did make an active effort to befriend the residents, doing their best to keep the fact they were a Puppeteer under wraps. They would slip up sometimes and would panic and Reset the world, not wanting a repeat of what happened when Enoch found out.

However, the more time passed and the more they Reset the world, the less they interacted with everyone else, eventually shutting themselves off completely.

As time passes, they become friends with Bella, Chester, and the other Guardians. They do accept them and their status, knowing Nero would never hurt them on purpose.

Information only pertaining to their relationship with Romeo. CW for cannibalism.

After eons of cutting off other Elsen, Nero spends most of their days in quiet solitude. Romeo spots them in a tea shop while out with 705. Nero, ever the socially awkward one, did not quite understand he was flirting with them until they were already on a date.

Nero spent the whole date trying to get away, but they were already caught in his clutches. Not fearing death because they know they'll simply Reset again, they eventually become intrigued by him, not understanding they were beginning to fall in love.

Eventually, Romeo loses his patience and corners them. Nero pushes him back with a Competence attack, They are forced to reveal they are a Puppeteer. Romeo, who originally was planning on eating them, realizes he loves them.

After confessing his cannibalistic nature, and a messy break-up, Nero eventually agrees to help Romeo overcome his habits, thinking if they can learn to help him, they can learn to help the Guardians and stop The Batter.

Romeo agrees and they get back together. Little did they know their troubles were just beginning...

About

They have god-like powers, but the physical constitution of a newborn kitten. They tend to be very sickly, suffering from anemia, vitamin deficiencies, and a generally bad immune system. Their body functions just like a normal elsen's with the exception that they can't go Burnt. At least not in the usual sense.

They work as a graphic designer and street artist for the Guardians whenever they need new signs or a wall painted. They often suggest to give signs and walls a bit more flair, but the Guardians always want the same thing, which frustrates Nero. But it puts food on the table so they endure.

They spent the first few Resets moving around frequently because of their job, but eventually decided to be in the middle of everything and found a modest apartment by the Grand Library in Bismark.

Nero suffers from chronic pain and fatigue, as well as frequent stomach problems. It’s probably why they’re anxious and depressed a lot of the time. It might also be why they can’t sleep at night. Despite this, they tend to fidget a lot. Probably from all the tea they drink.

Nero is very warm and friendly but tends to sometimes say or do things that come off as mean. They don’t know they’re doing it and will apologize if brought up.

They frequently space out on things and have a terrible memory. They sometimes come off as “not all there.” Despite this, they’re very good at thinking abstractly and love to problem solve, but they’re also indecisive.

Slowly, they start to build closer relationships with the residents, though what Nero is like outside the game is still unknown. They'll often drop hints, but not enough to paint a full picture.

Trivia

  • Favorite color is purple
  • Likes: Tea, quiet, sleep, animals, movies, video games, electronic music, stuffed animals
  • Dislikes: Insomnia, anxiety, depression, large crowds, being allergic to cats
  • Has a large stuffed shark that they sleep with.
  • Will speak Spanish with Zacharie frequently, though Nero is still learning.
  • Is actually a Puppeteer but tends to keep that under wraps. They helped with the Reset, wanting to give the Guardians a second chance at life, but doesn't like taking credit.
  • Their attacks are powerful, rivaling that of the Guardians themselves. They could destroy the world if they so desired, but would never dream of going through with it.
  • Pre-Reset, the Guardians do recognize Nero because they never seem to age, but chalk it up to two different elsen with similar styles.
  • Post-Reset, Nero finds a baby Tiburce and names her Tilly. Nero loves dressing her up in little costumes and accessories. Tilly doesn't seem to mind, often soaking in the attention she gets from wearing such cute outfits.
  • They cannot go burnt. Instead, they use up too much power and their code glitches, turning them into a glitching berserker, destroying everything in their path. Blessedly, this very rarely happens.
  • They are permanently tired because they booted up the game late at night and it ended up manifesting into the OFF world.
  • Paired with Romeo.

Backstory

Once upon a time, Nero was a Puppeteer like any other. They came to help The Batter to purify the world, but when it was over, the guilt weighed heavy on their soul.

Zacharie reached out to them, knowing the world they came from was dying and wanted a way to escape. With nothing to lose and a chance to revisit the world they fell in love with, Nero agreed.

The first iteration of the game was spent simply exploring and poking around the world's secrets and seeing what they could uncover. Back then, they looked like a run-of-the-mill elsen to blend in: white shirt, black tie. However, they were gifted Competence to help defend themselves from the dangers in the world.

During their exploration, they realized the Guardians were all unhappy. Dedan's sadness especially intrigued them since they were terrified of him at first, but that slowly grew into a fondness.

Things went wrong when a group of spectres attacked them in Zone 3. They used their Competence to fight them, but still being new to using powers, they got overwhelmed and died when a spectre bit off their head.

They were then teleported to the Nothingness where they were given two choices: CONTINUE or RESET. Not wanting to start from the beginning, Nero chose CONTINUE. However, something went wrong. The residents recognized them. They were chased throughout Zone 3, the elsen thinking they were a new spectre of sorts. Eventually Enoch was called and Nero died again after being defeated by him.

Zacharie gave them the option to simply quit the game, but they considered what the Guardians told them about their pain and suffering. They began to care deeply about the elsen. They got it in their head that if they simply took the right steps, they could save the world.

Not wanting to be recognized by Enoch however, they decided to start from the beginning by pressing RESET.

Ever since then, Nero has seen the world countless times from start to end. Their sense of time is warped compared to the other elsen. Whenever they got frustrated, or died, they would choose RESET every time, fearing what may happen if they were to be recognized again. They refuse to use their Competence in public because they do not want a repeat of what happened in Zone 3. As a result, they only go to Zone 3 to work and avoid Enoch as much as they can.

Each death is painful. While the fear has gone, they despise having to endure it over and over again.

However, the more they RESET, the more the world began to change. It started subtle at first, but over time they noticed the world would expand. New characters appeared. The Guardians, though always corrupted by their power, would show more of their personalities. Nero began to dress a little more freely, but consciously chooses outfits that help them blend into the background.

Nero realized their presence was changing the world. Characters they hadn't yet met would get déjà vu the first time meeting them in a new RESET. As a result, they try not to use RESETS as liberally, though so far the world always ends the same: with the arrival of The Batter. It seems no matter how they try to stop him, The Batter always completes his sacred mission, or the world is left a desolate husk.

Not to mention, the longer they stayed in OFF world, the more of their memories they start to lose of their part life. Nero decides they're okay with that since most of their human memories were not pleasant.

It wasn't until Dedan reciprocated his assistant's romantic love that Nero finally managed to find a way to bring the world back. They suspect they may have manifested Chester somehow, but are not entirely sure how.

Spoilers for Chester's story in Reset and Resurrect.

Post-Resurrect, they still spend a lot of time hiding their role in the game. However, they slowly come out of their shell and reveal their secret to the Guardians. To their surprise, the Guardians are grateful for their hard work and agree to let them do whatever they want. Nero becomes the official protector and code keeper in case any other dangers befall their world.

They suspect their human body may die once they complete their mission, but they could potentially live in the game forever. Or their body may become fully elsen and they will age and die naturally. In any case, they decide it's fine as long as they get to see the world without a Batter.
