Profile

One is a field mechanic that works for the Crimson Conclave Manufacturing Company. Her job is to venture into the wilderness to fix downed research drones and vehicles. However, she just as often finds herself in the midst of deadly conflicts between powerful entities, as she herself is just as strong thanks to her experimental 'metal soul'.

One began life as a normal automotive mechanic working the city of Anecast. Her mentor was Ikoata, a seemingly calm and relaxed man who proved to be a horrible teacher and even worse person. He watched One struggle due to his lack of assistance and failed to do anything to help her, all the while his other apprentice, Rust, demeaned her for her incompetence. He even helped escalate their animosity by talking about one to the other behind their back. This was all due to him hating them both and regretting ever taking on apprentices. It was only until One's self-worth was shattered and she closed herself off from the world that Rust realized their mentor's evil. With the help of the company president, Queen, Rust was able to pull them both away from Ikoata's abuse and got the opportunity to take charge of a mechanic shop of his own. Not long after, Ikoata died of a long-term illness, but the pair still had trouble moving on, struggling to communicate and make progress towards healing, even with Rust doing everything he could to take care of One.

A year after Ikoata's death, Queen offered to re-hire One as a field mechanic for the company, knowing she had still been unofficially working for Rust after shutting herself away from the world. Though still in a poor headspace and confident she would want to stay in such a dangerous job for very long, she accepted at Rust's insistence. The world outside of Anecast was known to be highly dangerous due to a hatred that had formed between the humans of the city and the animals of the wilderness. It would at least be an isolating job away from people, so One was willing to give it some sort of try.

While out on her first job to fix a research drone, far from the city, One encountered a strange man and woman by the name of Aurin and Phoebe. The two claimed to come from another dimension, and based on Aurin's strange appearance, One immediately believed them. Aurin seemed to already know something about her and wanted to help her, invited her to his dimension if she was ever able to visit. One agreed, and the two shortly departed through a strange portal-like door.

Shortly after completing her repair, One had another fateful encounter with a deadly yutyrannus by the name of Shexian. She was just barely saved by a friendly argentavis, who didn't seem to mind that she was a human. The bird, named Athena, was able to tell her about the monster the terror he rained across the western half of the island. She learned of his tendency to kill and eat all he could get away with, and his group of lackeys that did they same. One believed she had already met the end of the line for her field mechanic career, unable to protect herself from such great danger, but a solution would eventually fall into her hands...

One encountered an identical portal-like door to the one she saw before and was able to enter the Kingdom of Oblivion, a place inside a dimension called the Void. There, she met up with Aurin again inside his laboratory. She learned of his soul-studying endeavors and was instantly intrigued by the prospect of testing out his experimental "metal soul", a special artifical soul said to act as a guardian. One agreed to be a test subject, and her normal soul was traded for the metal soul. She immediately saw a change in demeanor, going from quiet and reserved to sociable, though she didn't immediately understand why. Aurin was pleased by this and let her know that she could visit him in Oblivion anytime she liked, and in the meantime, he would study her from afar, gazing into her mind with his telepathy.

With her newfound sociability, One gained the idea to help the animals take down Shexian and his crew. It was farfetched, but it was the only way to keep her job. She visited Thanatos, a sabertooth tiger Athena told her about whose partner was murdered by Shexian. He reluctantly agreed to help her, believing the pistol One had for self-defense could be just the thing to tip the scale. While abilities proved to be lackluster at first, things changed complete in her second encounter with Shexian. A power awakened from her metal soul that granted her deadly claws that could cut through almost anything, and she still had much experience to gain, it finally put her on even ground with the deadly beasts she once feared.

Over the coming weeks, One gained many new allies and performed many epic feats with their help, gaining her the attention of Anecast's elite, who sought her power for better or for worse. In the meantime, Aurin and One's friendship blossomed then fell as she learned more and more about his unethical experiments, starting with his original failed experiment with the metal soul causing the death of Oblivion's knight, Astr, and ending with the truth behind the soul's existence in the first place.

She discovered that the metal soul was made to block out her memories of Ikoata as a way to prevent her from developing a frightening metaphysical parasite called a "Nevermore Eye". While it was seemingly a good reason, it prevented her and Rust from finding closure and drove a greater wedge between them. Not only that, but the event that inspired the soul's creation disturbed her all the more, and she knew she could no longer associate with the scientist. However, fate had other ideas as she found herself continuing to fight against him in order to protect those she cared about, as he soon lost his mind and turned his anger towards whoever he could.
