"I'll beat you in a Heartbeat!"

Quirk
Maako's quirk "Heartbeat" allows him to amplify the vibrations caused by his heart beating, anywhere on his body. It is a very versatile quirk, as he can use it for battle or for recon.
  1. In battle, Maako uses"Heartbeat"to really pack a punch, to propel himself off of obstacles or the ground for an increase in movement, and as a buffer/barrier for when he gets tossed around.
  2. For recon, if he can concentrate enough, he can send a soft vibration through buildings or through the ground to get a rough idea of the number of bodies around him. This is an ability not first available to him, and was gained through serious training and experience years later.
Maako's body is slightly more elastic than the average persons, to adapt to the force that comes with "Heartbeat"'s amplification. Imagine a bouncy ball, but toned down a little. He will bounce though.

It is rare, but in a heightened emotional state, Maako can push his limits and go berserk. He usually limits the extent of amplification, for the safety of others around him, and to make sure he doesn't fatally injure someone or injure himself. When he loses his head, he no longer cares about the consequences of his quirk, and will amplify to the point where others can't approach him. Much like sound waves produced by explosions, waves to the beat of his heart surround him like a bubble. He also becomes completely sonically isolated in this state and is unable to hear others because of the vibrations.  Being exposed to him in this state can cause: loss of hearing, extreme headaches, ruptured organs, inability to breathe, bleeding from orifices, and sometimes death.
Extra Info:
  • He's banned from playing professional sports because he can and will cheat using his quirk. He doesn't much care for following the rules. :P
  • His quirk and hero training prevents him from wearing a binder, but he wears one on his off days.
Past

As a child, Maako was very rambunctious and cheerful, taking after his mother; whereas Masaru, Maako's fraternal twin, grew up more stern and strict like their father. When Maako and Masaru were young, their house was filled with noise and excitement, often caused by their mother and her loving and excitable personality that warmed up any room she was in. Their stern father was even softened by the atmosphere she created. She was very much the light of their household.

One day, as the twins walked back from elementary school, a rush of police cars sped past them. A wave of excitement washed over Maako, and one of dread over Masaru, as they both rushed to where the cars were heading. Both ran, following the echoes of police sirens, but Maako sped ahead, eager to witness whatever action taking place firsthand. When Masaru finally caught up with Maako, he was standing in front of their house, all of his previously held excitement seemingly drained from his body. Their father gathered the boys, and tried to direct them away from their house, that was now flooded with police officers, but gossip and gasps of shock didn't escape their ears.

A funeral for their mother was held the following month.

Life from then on was less than ideal. Living in their house after the incident was—impossible, which led to them moving in with their aunt, their father's sister. With no other idea how to cope with the death of his wife, their father delved into working, unsure how else to provide for his two sons. Masaru became more reserved, while Maako was left in extreme emotional turmoil. His father's absence and his brother, being a child himself, made Maako feel he was truly alone.

Their aunt, who was kind enough, had never cultivated a close relationship with either Masaru or Maako before this, so when it came to their interactions, a lot of the time they came off as forced or insincere. Maako would often have panic attacks that were triggered by sounds or subjects that reminded him of the day his mom passed away. Usually, he could compose himself on his own after awhile, but his aunt happened to be home during a particularly severe attack he was having. She was not a motherly kind of person, but she attempted to calm him in a way she thought would calm him down; she knelt down and held him tightly. This only sent Maako into further panic, and he accidentally activated his quirk while trying to push her away and the force drove her into the adjacent wall. Horrified by what he'd done and imagining the consequences of his actions, he ran away from home. He was found within the day, but when he returned, he was met with faces full of disdain and weary, contemptuous eyes. His father, a man who felt very strongly about appearances and unwanted attention, scolded Maako for causing such a scene and "attacking" his aunt. Maako not only felt he was alone, he knew it now.

Maako's subsequent middle school years were a very tumultuous period for him. He often acted out, and got into fights which only fueled his father's anger and his brother's disappointment, driving them all apart. It was then Maako found something to keep him going. He grew up admiring the heroes in shows like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, and of course, the all mighty hero, All Might! He knew all his heroes wouldn't give up and would persevere, and used that thought as motivation and a last thread of hope to keep him going. He started to work when he wasn't in school to save up money to eventually apply to U.A. High School, or any hero school that would take him, even though he knew no one would support his decision.

When he graduated middle school, and against his families wishes, he applied and successfully got into U.A. High School and began living on his own. From here on is where his story starts!
Personality
Maako has a very volatile and cheery personality. He believes that he should never be without a smile on his face, just like his favorite hero, All Might, despite the possibility of it being an inappropriate situation for one. The way he interacts with others can seem very strange and scary because of his consistent smile and seemingly gleeful attitude, while underneath his emotions can be extremely unstable and shift constantly from one to the next.

He cares deeply for those he is close to, but usually he doesn't see the need for close relationships with others. Anyone who doesn't interest him immediately, he will usually ignore unless they speak to him first. The only times he will interact with someone first is if he doesn't like them or something they're doing. Because he acts this way, he doesn't have many friends and most of his relationships are antagonistic in nature. He often picks fights with people he doesn't like or if he sees someone being unjust towards others.
Present Life
At 15:After getting accepted into U.A. High School, Maako moved out as soon as his last year of middle school was over. He now currently resides in a small one room apartment, in a building that hasn't been updated in years. His room has a closet, a toilet and a small kitchen space, but no bath. He visits the bathhouse down the street and is friends with all the housewives and old ladies; they will sometimes bring him food or give him hand-me-downs, and they worry about him a lot. He works several part-time jobs to pay for his expenses; including rent, food, and anything else he needs. He has pretty low standards when it comes to his quality of life; the fact that he has a place to himself and he can attend the school All Might teaches at is already enough to give him a sense of satisfaction. He's also not a decadent person, so things like food and clothing don't take up much of his expenses. For clothing he usually just wears the same three track suits he's owned from middle school, and buys anything else from the 100 yen store. He is very unfashionable and has no desire to work on his looks. And, when it comes to food, he's the kind of person to never really complain about the taste of something.

At 20:After graduating and successfully becoming a full-time hero, Maako is living the life he dreamed of as a kid!
Relationships

Father
Maako hasn't spoken to his father in years, nor does he really feel the need to. His father has treated him poorly too many times for him to really care what he thinks about the current life he's living, or to involve him in it for him to potentially drag him down again.

Masaru (younger brother)
Maako doesn't care much for his brother, and his brother doesn't care much for him. A lot of Masaru's opinions about Maako were influenced by their father and so they don't mix very well. Masaru will often casually insult Maako, but Maako doesn't really take it to heart.

Later on, Maako and Masaru meet again, without the influence of their father, and decide to stay in touch. Though there's still insults thrown between them, Maako feels as if they come from a place of familial love more than hate. He can feel Masaru warm up to him, and even take pride in the fact that he's following his dream of becoming a hero.

(In the future, Maako and Masaru meet again after Maako is way into high school and things are going well for him. His brother still holds an antagonistic view of him, but they decide to meet up every now and again to catch up, without telling their father. Masaru secretly grows to think Maako is pretty cool.)

Yoshi
Maako met Yoshi when he was assigned as her bodyguard in a training assignment. At the time, he thought mainly of doing his job, but soon got swept up in Yoshi's positive aura and became friends with her. Maako considers Yoshi the closest person to him. He can trust her wholeheartedly and would do anything to make sure she is safe.

In the past, unknown to both of them, Maako and Yoshi had been childhood friends, and Maako had come to the rescue little Yoshi many times when she was in trouble. Sadly, when his mom passed, they moved away and never kept in contact. But, alas they met again!
