Styx was taken as a young pup and was placed up for sale in an illegal pet market stall in the Red Market (like a black market)
 as a "mongrel puppy". It got to the point where he became very sick and on  the verge of dying when the apprentice found him. The shop-keep sold him to her for cheap thinking he wouldn't last to see daylight.
