"The world bloody sucks but I'm still gonna have fun."

Katarina Leyland is a part Ranger, part Engineer for the Conversation train crew. Initially, she served to secure operating posts for the various forces of the Antartic base, but later, she was taken aboard the Conservation as an engineer under the guidance of Joule, the Senior Engineer, and her lover. In a way, her romantic interests opened up many opportunities for the world.

Katarina is a fairly peppy woman who struggles with, well, existential dread on occasion. As a result, she can seem to rebound from her moods quickly, though it's more a consequence of her situation than anything. Other than that, many of her friends can expect her to be a lively, cheerful woman who enjoys a good drink and a good party.

History

Katarina Leyland was born early enough to be alive before the apocalypse had come about. She grew up with a sister and her mother and father, getting along well with all of them as she grew to become interested in the arts and in engineering. Her attempts at engineering were met with failure due to her lack of aptitude for math, so she instead worked to pursue her interests in art. There, she flourished, able to create her ideas and draw them out in beautiful works. She graduated soon after and began freelance work as an artist, though, she didn't have long at all to enjoy it.

An incident at a science facility harboring the "Mass Hadron Collider", a more-massive variant of the Hadron Collider, resulted in reality itself being fractured by an experiment gone awry, resulting in strange mutations of the world and various parts of the world being turned into "rifts", where myth and reality blended together, strange creatures pouring out. The damage to the world was too great to be contained entirely, factions springing up in attempts to maintain order in peace in the chaos, with many of the original world governments shattered, and long distance communication only possible via the vast network of intercontinental railways.

Work

Katarina works two jobs, originally just working as a Ranger for the Ranger Corps, a world-wide expedition team focused on securing old territory for safe colonization as well as securing railway stops to allow for further travel and exploration. After a fated night spent with a wonderful woman, as well, she was taken aboard the crew of the Conservation as a side-operation, lending her skills as a Ranger to the crew and being trained as an Engineer.

Ambition

Her ambitions are to restore whatever semblance of normalcy that she can, rather than just let the past die. Her greatest desire is to be able to draw again, selling art to others and capturing the world with her art when digital technology can be hard to come by.
