― Akita Midori

Midori Akita (秋田 緑 Akita Midori) was a first-year student from Karasuno High and one of the girls volleyball team's wing spikers. After her first year, she transferred to Niiyama Jōshi High to play for their volleyball team. She is currently playing as an opposite hitter for the Japanese professional team Hatsumichi Springs.

Appearance

Midori is a petite girl with fair skin. She has long brown hair that is normally tied up in a high side ponytail. Her hair is hard to tame, so it often looks a bit messy. She has mentioned that she rarely wears her hair down because it looks like a bedhead. She has round, bright green eyes, and she usually has a cheerful expression. Because of her small stature and build, she is often mistaken for a junior high student, or sometimes even younger. She has been the shortest player on any team she has been a member of.

She can often be seen wearing her school uniform, which consists of a white dress shirt, a red bow, a tan sweater vest, a gray skirt, and shin-length black socks. She always wears shorts under her skirt. While playing for Karasuno, she wore the standard black and white uniform with the number 8. While playing for Niiyama Jōshi, she wore the standard white and red uniform, once again with the number 8. During games, she wears black knee pads, black elbow pads, and a black compression sleeve on her right arm. Her volleyball shoes are white with green accents. Her casual clothes often consist of cute, girly clothes with bright colors and patterns. She wants to wear shoes with heels, but she is often too clumsy to be able to walk in them.

Personality

Midori is often identified by her loud and energetic personality. She has a loud speaking voice that only gets louder when she gets excited, which is often. She is friendly and cheerful, and she talks a lot. She is said to be someone who never runs out of things to talk about. She can be very affectionate towards the people she is close to, and she is normally very straightforward with her feelings. She is often described as high-energy, and she is enthusiastic about almost everything she does. She is very optimistic, and it is unusual to see her upset for long. She has said that she almost never gets nervous, instead growing more determined when faced with adversity. She is naturally curious, which can sometimes get her into trouble. She can be very simple-minded and reckless, diving headfirst into situations without thinking about the consequences. She has an almost supernatural ability to persuade people and get what she wants, so she can be quite spoiled at times. She can also be a bit greedy. She is incredibly clumsy, often tripping over herself and dropping things. She doesn't do very well in school, and she can be quite oblivious, often saying whatever is on her mind without considering her surroundings.

She takes on a completely different personality in games. She becomes almost scarily serious, her cheerful expression traded for one of absolute focus. She is always 100% determined to win, and she believes wholeheartedly that no game is unwinnable. While still clumsy and full of energy, she moves with more purpose. She also becomes more crafty, coming up with clever ways to trick her opponents. She absolutely hates being underestimated because of her height, and she finds great joy in seeing her opponents' looks of disbelief when she scores on them. People have noted that the more experience she gets, the more devilish and almost sadistic she becomes in games.

Background

When she was little, it was easy to tell that she was an active and energetic child. She was always doing things, always bouncing off the walls. This drove her parents crazy, as it was hard to keep her under control. It wasn't until her older brother, Ichirō, got into volleyball that she found a way to channel her energy. Her brother always played sports, but he never played volleyball until a friend told him he'd be good at it. Ichirō wanted to work hard to become the best he could on his own, so he asked his younger sister to help him practice. He had her toss to him over and over again until neither one could move their arms. During this time, Midori decided she wanted to be just like her brother and play volleyball. He taught her everything he knew, though all he knew was how to be a wing spiker.

Midori continued playing volleyball as she grew up. She was a naturally gifted player, so she had a bad habit of only relying on her natural talents. In junior high, she attended the powerhouse school Kitagawa Daiichi. She impressed the coaches, and she was put on the starting lineup as a first-year. This caused her to gain the attention of Isobe Kaede, the second-year libero on the team. Kaede disliked how Midori was given a starting position without having to do much work, while Kaede had to work hard and fight for her spot on the court. Midori was always praised for being such a strong player despite her height, but Kaede did not receive the same praise despite being similar in height. After losing a championship game, Kaede took out her frustration on Midori by saying that someone who only ever relied on their natural talent and never worked for anything had no right to be upset over a loss. Midori began crying, and Kaede immediately felt guilty. Afterwards, Kaede apologized to Midori, saying she should not have been so cruel to her when the younger girl did nothing wrong. Midori, however, took her works to heart and vowed that she would give it her all from then on. She wanted to show her senpai that she could work just as hard as everyone else, but she never got a chance to. After the end of that playing season, Kaede left Kitagawa Daiichi and transferred to Keisetsu Junior High, a well-known powerhouse school in Tokyo.

While in her second year, her brother, a third-year at Karasuno High School and a part of the volleyball club, developed an illness that led to the rapid deterioration of his eyesight. This led to his early retirement from the team. Midori swore to keep playing volleyball and become the best player in Japan to live out her brother's dreams. This oath, however, was put on hold for a long while. When she was in her third year of junior high, she suffered a severe ankle sprain that took her out of the game for months on end. All recommendations she had received for elite high schools were taken back because the amount of time it would take for her to fully recover would have been too long. She was in a slump for a while, but she quickly bounced back. She vowed to come back better than ever and prove to all those schools that she could still be the best player in Japan. She recovered much faster than anyone thought, and she was back in time for the first season of her high school career, where she attended Karasuno High.

For that first year, Karasuno's girls team had a poor record. Midori very clearly stood out from the rest of the team, but couldn't do much on her own. In the middle of the year, Aoyama Momoka, a first year setter from Shinzen High, transferred to Karasuno and joined the team. The duo of Midori and Momoka emerged, giving Karasuno a valuable weapon. Even still, they struggled to win games. They were eliminated in the first round of the Miyagi Prefecture Nationals qualifers, but the coaches from Niiyama Jōshi High had watched the game and recognized Midori's abilities. They offered for Midori to practice with Niiyama Jōshi's team after Nationals was over, and if she impressed the coaches, she would be allowed to join the team. Midori was incredibly nervous, despite almost never feeling nervous. She practiced with the team, made a good impression, and she transferred to Niiyama Jōshi for her second year of high school. She was reunited with Kaede, who was the starting libero for the team. Finally able to prove how much she had grown, Midori worked very hard and earned the title of Ace in her third year. In her third year, her team faced Fukurōdani (Maho's team) in the finals of the spring tournament, narrowly winning in the last set.

After graduating from high school, she moved in with Kageyama. She tried out for the V.League Division 1 team, the Hatsumichi Springs, becoming a wing spiker. Despite not growing much taller, she became known as Hatsumichi' Petit Terror (プチテラー Puchi terā). Maho and Midori were a powerful combination, and the way they seemed to be able to communicate without speaking led to them becoming known as the "witch and her familiar" (魔女と使い魔 Majo to tsukaima).

Midori is described as a player who also has a lot of presence wherever she plays. While she had a large amount of natural athletic talent, she also worked very hard to get to the level she is at. She is clumsy and a bit simpleminded outside of volleyball, but when she gets in a game, she can be surprisingly crafty. Because of her unpredictable and somewhat unorthodox methods, she can put pressure on a team just by being on the court. However, she still prefers straightforward spikes that make a nice sound, as she says they "look cooler." She likes flashy plays, and she can sometimes get upset if she hasn't made a good play in a while. While her spikes aren't particularly powerful, her speed and powerful jumps allow her to reliably evade blockers. She hates being underestimated because of her height, but she has found a certain pleasure in seeing the other team's looks of disbelief when she snatches points from under their nose. As she grows as a player and gains more experience, she is more willing to try different techniques and expand her arsenal of attacks. She is also more willing to recognize her own weaknesses and ask for help in improving.

Jumping Reach: 301 cm

Skills

  • Speed: She is quick and agile, able to move around to almost any position on the court in a heartbeat. Her run-up approach is also very fast, causing her to seemingly come out of nowhere when spiking. When properly synced up with her setter, her attacks can be quick enough to happen before a block can be set up.
  • Jumping: She can jump high enough to make up for her short height, although jumping at full power all the time depletes her stamina quicker. She is noted to have complete control over her body while in the air, allowing her to react effectively to blockers and wonky tosses. Some even say she's more graceful in the air than she is on the ground.
  • Quick Jumps: Along with being able to jump high, she also reaches the peak of her jump quicker than people expect. This can sometimes cause blockers to jump too late. She can vary the timing of her jumps and hit the ball before or after the peak of its trajectory to further confuse blockers.
  • Block Tooling: She has trained with Bokuto to be able to perform a block out, where she spikes the ball either up at the tips of the blockers' fingers or across at the outside blocker's hand. Because of her mid-air stability, she can position herself to get the best angle for this technique.
  • Feint: Bokuto also taught her how to feint, where she purposefully hits the ball softer so that in lands in the front court. She uses this technique to surprise blockers. At first, she didn't want to do this technique because it "wasn't as cool," but she quickly learned how satisfying it was to watch an attack like this hit the floor.
  • Setting: After seeing two of her setter friends, Kageyama and Maho, working on developing their spikes, she decided that it would be useful for her to learn how to set well. She began asking Kageyama, Maho, and Aoyama to help her practice setting, and she in turn helped them practice spiking. She can now reliably act as a backup setter in the case of her team's setter not being able to get the ball. She can also pretend like she is going for an attack on second contact in order to draw blockers, then quickly set to another hitter.
  • Serving: After her first year of high school, she began to develop her jump serve. While her serve isn't particularly powerful, she can serve with fairly good accuracy.

Quotes

"You don't know what it's like to be underestimated! People see you, and they see a confident and capable player! They respect you immediately. But when people look at me, they see a tiny little girl. They think I'm not capable of anything just because if my size. And it's only worse when they see that stupid ankle brace... because then they see a tiny little girl who can't even be at her best. I just want to prove them wrong and show them that I am just as capable as anyone else. Or even better, that I'm the best!"

— to Kageyama Tobio

"Oh, wow! You still look like a giant when I'm standing up straight!"

— to Haiba Lev

"At this point, [Maho] knows I stop at nothing to get what I want. Most of the time, she just agrees so she saves herself the trouble."

— to Hinata Shōyō

"[Tsukishima]'s super tall and good at blocking! He barely needs to jump! He just puts his hands up like whoosh! And slams the ball down like bam!"

— to Aoyama Momoka

"Tobi-chi, have I ever told you how great you are? Super talented. Devoted, too. Oh, did you do something different with your hair today? It looks good."

— to Kageyama Tobio (trying to get him to toss for her)

"I may have been helped to get here, but it's my own strength that made me stand out! I've worked way too hard to second guess myself now! It's time to prove myself!"

— to Kageyama Tobio

"One trick, even if you only use it once, can be the difference between winning and losing. And if that one trick can distract your opponent for just a moment, that's one more moment you can use to score while they're not looking."

— to Shiraishi Maho

"Don't try to act all tough! Should I tell everyone about how on the bus back from the training camp, you fell asleep on my shoulder?"

— to Kageyama Tobio

"I'm not the same person I was back in middle school. Those words you spoke to me back then... I still remember them and think about them. [...] It was exactly what I needed to hear, but no one had the courage to say it except for you. But I've changed since then. And I'll prove it as many times as I need to until you acknowledge me."

— to Isobe Kaede

"I'm going to play for that team."

— to Kageyama Tobio, while watching Niiyama Jōshi's game

Relationships

Akita Ichirō

[ Midori || Nīsan ]

Ichirō is Midori's idol and one of her biggest supporters. They are very close, and they often text and talk on the phone. Ichirō is the reason that Midori began playing volleyball, as he was the one that taught her. He would often proclaim his dream to be the best spiker in Japan, despite not being tall. Midori began to share this dream, and when Ichirō was forced to retire from volleyball due to illness, Midori took over his dream and made it her goal to achieve it for both of them. They are said to be complete opposites, as Midori is loud and outgoing, and Ichirō is more calm and reserved. People are often surprised to find out that Midori's brother is "that nerdy looking guy."

Kageyama Tobio

[ Akita / Midori || Tobi-chi / Tobi ]

They originally met in junior high. When Midori noticed that their houses were in the same direction, she proposed that they walk together. Kageyama initially wanted nothing to do with her, so he ignored her or only gave short responses when he spoke to her. Eventually, due to Midori's persistence in befriending him, he warmed up to her, and they eventually became quite close (as close of a friend as Kageyama could have). Midori always ignored what people told her about Kageyama's arrogant and short-tempered personality, and she always stood up for him if she could, saying that he was a good person deep down. She would sometimes even get into intense arguments with people about this. After graduating junior high, they fell out of touch, but they rekindled their friendship after discovering that they both attended Karasuno. They still walk home and eat lunch together, something that Kageyama's teammates like to tease him about.

Midori thinks Kageyama is too serious sometimes, and she is constantly trying to get him to lighten up. She often teases him or cracks jokes to him to do this. She still thinks he can be a bit of a jerk sometimes, and he is pretty good at riling her up. Even so, she enjoys being around him, and she doesn't hesitate to be honest with him about this. She often asks him to toss for her after practice because she likes his tosses. Kageyama finds her loud and high energy personality a bit overwhelming at times, and she isn't spared from his "dumbass" remarks. Though he would likely never admit it, he enjoys her company. They started shortly before their second year began. After high school, they moved in together.

Hinata Shōyō

[ Akita || Hina-chi ]

They get along great due to their similar energetic personalities. They are in the same class and sit next to each other. They help each other with schoolwork, though they usually aren't any help to each other at all. They will often team up to pick on Kageyama. They are often called the Shorty Squad (チビチーム Chibi chīmu) when they're together.

Tsukishima Kei

[ Akita || Tsukki ]

They often butt heads. Tsukishima likes to taunt Midori because of her size and clumsiness, and any comeback Midori comes up with usually just results in another insult. He often compares her to a hummingbird or a gnat. They are never truly malicious towards each other, as Tsukishima just likes getting a rise out of her. They are capable of getting along if they try. She begrudgingly respects his abilities as a blocker, even suggesting Aoyama ask him for help when she wanted to improve her blocking skills.

Hitoka Yachi and Shimizu Kiyoko

[ Midori-chan || Toka-chi, Shimi-san ]

When Midori crashed one of Karasuno's training camps in Tōkyō, she spent most of her time assisting the managers. She spent a lot of time Yachi and Kiyoko, and they became quite close. Since Kiyoko is the manager that sits on the bench with the team, Midori hangs out with Yachi when she watches the boys' games.

Michimiya Yui

[ Akita || Michi-san ]

Midori respects Michimiya as both a third-year and as captain. She respects the work that Michimiya puts into the team, despite their outcome not being great. Michimiya admires Midori's talent as a player, and she was grateful to get to play with the younger girl. Midori has said that if she ever becomes to captain of a team, she wants to be kind and supportive like Michimiya.

Aoyama Momoka

[ Midori-chan || Momo-chi ]

Momoka is one of Midori's closest friends during her time at Karasuno. They can often be seen together at volleyball events. They are a powerful combo during games, both having the utmost trust in each other's abilities. Midori always tries to get Momoka to be more confident in herself, as she thinks there's no reason for her not to be confident. Momoka finds it difficult to keep up with Midori's fast-paced way of living, but nonetheless enjoys being around her.

/ Isobe Kaede

[ Akita || Iso-san ]

They played together on Kitagawa Daiichi's team together for one year before Kaede transferred to Keisetsu. During that time, tensions were always high between them. Something about Kaede always set off Midori's instincts, causing her to be on edge around the older girl. Kaede thinks that the younger girl did not have to work for her starting position on the team, while Kaede had to work incredibly hard to even be considered. Kaede thinks that people always commend Midori for being such a strong player despite her height, but they never say that to Kaede since she is a libero. Because of this, Kaede finds it hard to be around Midori.

After losing a game one time, Kaede took her frustration out on Midori, saying how infuriating it was to see someone who only relied on her natural talent to be upset about a loss. After Midori began crying and ran off, Kaede immediately felt bad. She later apologized, saying that she had no right to be angry at Midori when the younger girl did nothing wrong. Though Midori is still wary around Kaede, she believes Kaede is a good person because of the kind things she said in her apology. Kaede doesn't necessarily dislike Midori as a person, but rather as a player. Midori feels the need to prove herself to Kaede, so many of the things that Kaede says will unintentionally provoke Midori. They both have mutual respect for each other. After Midori began playing for Niiyama, they began to make up. Midori said that she wasn't the same person she was in junior high, and she declared that she would prove herself to Kaede as many times as she needed to.

Shiraishi Maho

[ Mido-chan || Maccha ]

Midori and Maho were neighbors while Maho lived in Miyagi. They played volleyball together, both being regarded as prodigies. Together, they were a near unstoppable duo. During that time, they became very close and were nearly inseparable. Even when Maho moved to Tokyo at the end of their last year of elementary school, they remained in contact. Even to this day, they text often and are still good friends. On extended breaks from school, they will often visit each other. It was thanks to Maho that Midori was able to train with Bokuto. Maho helps Midori learn how to set, and Midori helps Maho practice her spikes.

Bokuto Kōtarō

[ Akki || Bo-san ]

They get along really well because of their similar loud personalities. The people around them say that it gets five times as loud whenever the two of them are together. Midori looks up to Bokuto and thinks he's one of the coolest people she knows, which only serves to inflate Bokuto's ego. Thanks to Maho, Midori got the chance to train with Bokuto. He helps her refine her spikes as well as expand her arsenal of attacks. He taught her how to tool blocks and how to feint. He sees her as one of his disciples along with Hinata.

Shiraishi Shōtarō

[ Midori || Nīchan ]

Because they lived near each other when they were young, they were often around one another, though Midori was closer friends with Maho. She affectionately refers to Shōtarō as her brother. Shōtarō enjoys teasing her for her size, which never fails to rile her up. He is easily annoyed by her loudness, and he doesn't hesitate to call her annoying. He says it's even worse when she's around Bokuto.

Sasano Kanae

[ Midori-chan || Kana-chi ]

They met in junior high, as they were both on the volleyball team in their first year. Kanae was pretty bad at volleyball and got discouraged easily, but Midori always encouraged her and said she would find something she was good at. Even after Kanae quit the team, they remained friends. After Kanae moved to Tōkyō during their first year of high school, they still talked occasionally.

Maruya Kaya

[ Midori-chan || Kaya-san ]

They met when their boyfriends, Ushijima and Kageyama, started playing on the same team after high school. After that, they became good friends, and they often propose going on double dates. Midori looks up to Kaya for her perfectly feminine personality, sometimes wishing she could be more girly like her. Kaya always says that she likes Midori's energy and outgoing ways, finding it charming.
