Sean had only immigrated the year before Merida and her siblings. He was 18, broke as a joke, and frankly would rather be in broke in America than broke in Ireland.

Archie had been visiting with some of the neighbors of the manor when Sean and his brother Donal were being fired by the foreman of the property.
Archie, seeing the poor guys down on their luck, offered them a job hauling freight and furniture for his family, so long as they never asked what exactly it was they were hauling.
Sean agreed immediately, dragging Donal along with him. Archie became fast friends with both Sean and Donal.

On their off time, Chris caught Donal and Sean in the gardens... planting flowers. The brothers both had a knack for gardening, though Donal preferred decorative plants and Sean preferred plants you could actually eat. Chris put Donal to work as the landscaper, and Sean to work planting fruits, veggies, and herbs. They much preferred this over hauling mysterious crates around.

In her spare time, Merida would wander the gardens and talk with both Sean and Donal. Donal was happily taken at this point, and could tell already his brother had fallen head over heels for Mer, so he actively tried to give Mer and Sean more time together without him. It worked.
Merida and Sean started to spend more and more time out in the gardens talking as he worked. One night, after the sun had set, Sean insisted that Merida join him in the center of the gardens. There she found a peach tree which Sean and Donal had spent the entire day transplanting. Sean had asked Chris if he could plant it, and when Chris agreed and said he'd pay for it Sean said no, HE was going to pay for it, plant it, and care for it. It was a gift for Merida, as he had learned she loved peaches.
When Chris realized what he was up to he jumped on board and gave him all the help he needed, from distracting Mer, to moving the tree.

Sean proposed to Merida under that tree. She gleefully said yes. (They were 22 and 21 at this point, having been talking in the gardens since they were 19 and 18)
The wedding was nothing flashy, simple, just family, exactly what they had both wanted. 

Ferdi was born in 1922, and Merida died in the process. Sean was absolutely devastated at having lost Merida, and gave his son the name Mer had wanted.
Ferdinand grew up under the care of his father, his uncles Archie and Donal, and his aunt Fiona.
Sean kept working in the gardens, tending all the crops. He took amazing care of Ferdi and loved him to death.
