zheyim "the black bandit" asyezi
Zheyim Asyezi, known as Zhey to his friends and as the Black Bandit to his friends and his enemies, is most well known as a member of a criminal gang known as the Bright Bandits and his involvement in their biggest heist- The Heist of the Royal Bank of Renly in the Capital, Rendermont. He didn't actually commit the crime (or at least, the explosion and murder part- he did participate in the bank heist itself), but he's spent the last five years on the run from a death sentence and searching for James "The Red Bandit" Harrow, a former member of his gang who was actually the one who betrayed them and blew up the bank.

Features & Traits

City Secrets (Urchin)
You know the secret patterns and flow to cities and can find passages through the urban sprawl that others would miss. When you are not in combat, you (and companions you lead) can travel between any two locations in the city twice as fast as your speed would normally allow.
Darkvision (Tiefling)
Thanks to your infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Hellish Resistance (Tiefling)
You have resistance to fire damage.
Legacy of Malbolge (Tiefling)
. You know the minor illusion cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the disguise self spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the invisibility spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Expertise (Rogue)
At 1st level, choose two of your skill Proficiencies, or one of your skill Proficiencies and your proficiency with Thieves' Tools. Your Proficiency Bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of the chosen Proficiencies.
At 6th level, you can choose two more of your Proficiencies (in Skills or with thieves' tools) to gain this benefit.
Sneak Attack (Rogue)
Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an Attack if you have advantage on the Attack roll. The Attack must use a Finesse or a ranged weapon.
You don't need advantage on the Attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn't Incapacitated, and you don't have disadvantage on the Attack roll.
The amount of the extra damage increases as you gain levels in this class, as shown in the Sneak Attack column of the Rogue table.
Thieves' Cant (Rogue)
During your rogue Training you learned Thieves' Cant, a Secret mix of dialect, jargon, and code that allows you to hide messages in seemingly normal conversation. Only another creature that knows Thieves' Cant understands such messages. It takes four times longer to convey such a Message than it does to speak the same idea plainly.
In addition, you understand a set of Secret signs and symbols used to convey short, simple messages, such as whether an area is dangerous or the territory of a thieves' guild, whether loot is nearby, or whether the people in an area are easy marks or will provide a Safe House for thieves on the run.
Cunning Action (Rogue)
Starting at 2nd level, your quick thinking and agility allow you to move and act quickly. You can take a bonus action on each of your turns in combat. This action can be used only to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action.
Roguish Archetype: Arcane Trickster (Rogue)
At 3rd level, you choose an archetype that you emulate in the exercise of your rogue abilities. Your archetype choice grants you features at 3rd level and then again at 9th, 13th, and 17th level.
Some rogues enhance their fine-honed skills of stealth and agility with magic, learning tricks of enchantment and illusion. These rogues include pickpockets and burglars, but also pranksters, mischief-makers, and a significant number of adventurers.
Uncanny Dodge (Rogue)
Starting at 5th level, when an attacker that you can see hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to halve the attack’s damage against you.

Trivia

  • there were rumors going around for a bit that he was the secret nbatsard child of the throne, and thus the next in line, but theyre false!
  • had a bad lisp bc of his teeth when he was younger, he had to work for years to hide it
  • his tattoos were all done by a buddy of his, who asked if he would let him practice on zhey in exchange for some coin or food. most of them have little actual meaning to zhey- he thinks theyre very cool, but, the only one with actual symbolism or weight behind it is the one of the raccoon on his chest.
  • he's genuinely good, despite being like,,, chill with murder sometimes. he just wants the best for his family and friends and for the people who are fucked over by the system and corruption, very much a revolutionary

Design Notes

  • tattoos are loose, dw about getting them completely accurate lmao
  • hair is uh. sort of a mullet??? idk, its a mess, its shaggy and and he cut it himself with a dagger or smth so.
  • his ears can either go inbetween his horns or underneath them- ive drawn it both ways, either works

The story so far

Zheyim Asyezi was born the only child to a low-middle class family in the city of Dewbourne, in Renly. He was born a tiefling, and always subject to a little discrimination, but he was happy for the most part- until when he was about 5 years old, and his family home was destroyed in a freak explosion and resulting fire. He was the only one who made it out alive, with the help of the family familiar, Kira.
Zheyim lived on the streets of Dewbourne for another three years, fending for himself the best he could and being taken in by a few of the older street kids who didn't have anywhere to go either. Kira kept him safe, found him food and shiny things, and kept him warm at night. He had a natural gift for magic, some racial abilities, but also a sharp mind that was already wanting to unravel things.
When he was 8 years old he met another young tiefling boy by the name of James Harrow, the Red Bandit, who had stobbed by the town with his guardian, Samuel Star (more commonly known as Silver, or the Silver Bandit). Harrow and Zhey hit it off, playing together in the streets for hours, until they are found by Silver passed out in a makeshift haybed in an alleyway. Harrow convinced Silver to bring Zheyim back with them (a magical rogue on the team would be so useful!!) and the three made their way back to Silver and Harrow's home in the Woodnora Mountains. Zhey had officially become the Black Bandit Over the years, Silver trains Harrow and Zhey how to be rogues, to steal and lie and get away with it, and along the way they pick up several more kids- Jacky Swallow (the Yellow Bandit), Sherlock Montague (the Blue Bandit), Johnny Wittleweed (the Green Bandit), and Drizzbelle and Quariel Obladra (the White and Pink Bandits). The group of kids, now with Harrow, the oldest at 13, leading them, left Silver to be more independent and visit the Capital City, Rendermont.
In Rendermont, the group picked up two more bandits- Veth Dayarm (the Grey Bandit), and Raven Nightwhisper (the Purple Bandit). Zheyim... developed a bit of a crush on Veth. Over the next four years they make a bit of a name for themselves as the Bright Bandits, a group of robin-hood style criminal kids who caused trouble for corrupt authorities and gave most of their winnings to the poor and needy and oppressed.
Then, when Zheyim was 16, they had their biggest heist yet- robbing the Royal Bank of Renly. It was a near total success, pulled off without a hitch- until the very end, with Zheyim and Harrow in the vault, when Harrow turned on Zheyim, planted explosives and incriminating evidence on Zhey during their fight, and blew up the bank with Zheyim and the rest of the bandits still in it.
There were over 20 casualties in the explosion. Zheyim was locked in the Vault by Harrow before the bombs went off- he was only able to escape with his life at all because Kira was on the other side and helped him get out. He was injured, though, and caught by the guards as he tried to escape the rubble. Zheyim was arrested and charged with the murders of civilians and the explosion of the bank itself- he was sentenced to execution, but narrowly escaped that as well and went on the run.
Zhey, convinved all his friends were dead and one of his closest friends, someone he considered a brother, had betrayed them for seemingly no reason and killed them all, tried to kill him too, spent the next five years running from the law and the rather large bounty on his head and looking for Harrow at the same time. He left Renly for a year or so, searched parts of the Sword Coast, but in all his searching, driven by spite and anger and guilt and deep, bone crushing grief, was useless. Harrow was nowhere to be found, and he returned to Renly.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, he got a letter addressed to him, from the Once and Certain Meister Corvus Edwane Ratgaven III, inviting him to attend his 500th birthday party at his home, Rothswood Manor, outside Redwater. Zheyim attended this, more out of curiousity and a lack of anything else interesting other than laying low and stealing shit. Corvus was killed during the party, with none of the attendees knowing who did it, and they went on a little investigation into who could have killed the Meister- and whoever discovered the murderer would be given the deeds to the Estate and Rothswood Manor itself, who was sentient.
Zheyim had more pressing matters on his mind though at the time, seeing as one of the other attendees of the party was none other than the Grey Bandit himself, Veth Dayarm, who Zheyim hadn't seen for 5 years- he thought he was dead. And Veth thought Zheyim was truly responsible for the bank explosion, and was terrified of Zhey- until Zheyim could corner him (while Veth was cowering behind a pantry door) and explain that it wasnt him, he didn't kill them, it was Harrow, Veth, please.
After making up with Veth, they and the rest of the party solved the murder of Corvus- he was killed by the sentient manor itself, Rothswood. They got together enough scrolls fo dispel magic from the estate's stores and were able to essentially kill Rothswood by group channeling a very powerful dispel magic into the heart of the manor, Rothswood's center. After they did, 1/5 of the deed to Rothswood Manor, as well as and more importantly the title Once and Certain Meister (which, legally, was the high court wizard and almost if not just as powerful as the King himself). One of the Attendees, Princess Eviee Ren, the actual Princess of Renly, turned on the rest of the party and had the manor surrounded with her royal soldiers and try and apprehend them. The party escaped through a secret tunnel exit, and fled Redwater through a handy little system of teleportation circles in the Open Queen brothel chain.
Now, Zheyim and his party are on the run from the Princess and her various terrifying bounty hunters, but mostly the gunslinging cowboy Lola Reeds, as well as trying to deal with each other and all our respective problems and goals.
