History

Valeria was born into a wealthy family inside the safety of Wall Sina, and grew up with all the luxuries that entailed. She was a spoilt and selfish child with very little regard to anyone outside her social circle. When she was eleven, she was diagnosed with a disease that the doctors assured her would not see her past the age of thirty-five. As her seemingly perfect life was suddenly turned on its head, Valeria had to re-evaluate her entire existense, which she wasn't ready for. She spent the better part of a year sulking in her room, feeling sorry for herself and cursing her lot in life. Her family grew increasingly distant from her, holding her at arm's length as though she might be conagious. She stopped attending social events, and her health began to deteriorate. She lost weight rapidly and had difficultly keeping food down. She began to lose her physical strength as well, and eventually she realized that she needed to do something with her life if she wanted to do anything besides waste away in her bedroom.

In an attempt to convince herself that her life was not pointless, she decided to join the military. She enlisted at age twelve, and her parents somewhat supported her initially, assuming she would join the Garrison and stay safely inside the wall. This was Valeria's initial plan as well, but as she went through her training and learned about the Titans, and saw increasingly smaller parties of the Survey Corps return from beyond the Walls, she resolved to actually do something useful with what was left of her life and join them when she graduated. When she told her parents of her new plan, they immediately dismissed it. She insisted that it was her decision, and it was the right one, which ultimately resulted in her family disowning her. This was heartbreaking for Valeria, but she pushed the pain down and used it to fuel her resolve to join the Survey Corps. After her training, she joined as planned. She managed to keep her strength up by training daily with a strict exercise regimen.

• Has terrible night terrors and generally lashes out physically at anyone who tries to wake her from them.
• Has a hard time keeping food down, which is why her weight is so low.
• Survives the Titan Annie arc by being part of the Survey Corps that stays back, having served for 5+ years.
• BFFs with Erwin, who she met during training.
• Puts up a tough front but is actually terrified of her illness leaving her helpless.
