Macha

The Phantom Knight

cDZDh3d.png?1
  •  Name   Macha ; The Morrigan
  •  Age   Ancient / "Immortal"
  •  Species   Spinxyn (Lich)
  •  Occupation   Exile [Formerly Bodyguard / Knight]
  •  Gender / Pronouns   Non-binary | They / Them
  • Location Dead Lands [Mostly]
  • Personality
Macha comes across as a cynical and bitingly cold spinx; they seem to dislike the company of others and usually only interact with people once every few months when they go to the nearest town to purchase supplies. Most don't know if they've always been like this, or their curses did this to them. Macha rarely speaks at length and a conversation with them is quite rare, so their history is a bit of a mystery. To people they lack familiarity with, they're usually straightforward and blunt. Though normally quiet, if especially passionate about a subject, they tend to be a bit melodramatic.
  • Macha doesn’t really possess an inclination towards good or evil as ideals and is mostly apathetic to the foundations of either. Extremes are senseless and restrictive, and the less you dedicate yourself to one or the other, the more free you are to choose what suits your needs best. They do what strikes them as the most correct thing to do in the moment, and as a result, is just as likely to do harm to someone as they are good. They couldn't care less for things such as law or honor; they have no problem lying, cheating, stealing, murdering, or manipulating someone for their own gain, but conversely they may also help someone to no greater benefit to themself. They may align themself with a group simply because it's convenient to do so, but the only authority they will respect is their own.
  • However, despite them coming across as a mostly unpleasant individual, there is benefit to having Macha as an ally. They care little for rank, status, or wealth; to them, the value of a person is measured by what they offer - skill, knowledge, strength - all valuable assets to possess. They have a negative view of those who use power to subjugate; after all, the purpose of power is simply to defend yourself or use it to advance forward in the name of discovery. Regardless of one's status or circumstances, they view others as having fairly equal potential to rise to greatness. Macha will also share their knowledge, though they aren't likely to trust just anyone with the information.
  • A ruthless knowledge-seeker, Macha will pursue power and knowledge when the chance presents itself. They have almost no morality when it comes to the pursuit of their goals. They dislike devout followers of the Gods and sees reliance on divine beings as a grave weakness that all should strive to rid themselves of. They view their accusers and those who look down on them as too feeble-minded to appreciate their genius and truth. After all, Macha managed to make themself functionally immortal, even if they are kind of dead.
  • Macha is extremely proficient with a spear and a graceful, capable combatant. However, they will only fight if provoked into it. That being said, if pressured into combat, they will fight to kill and have no qualms about doing soThey appear to use almost no magic. Most assume they were restricted from it as part of their punishment or they simply don't use it because their location doesn't allow for it. It seems to be a closely guarded secret of theirs. Besides that, Macha is a fairly knowledgeable necromancer and possesses the ability to see and commune with spirits.
  • Appearance
[WORK IN PROGRESS ; MORE DETAIL SOON!]
  • Is extremely thin, almost mummy-like. Their long fur drapes over their back like a cloak. On their left flank they have a crescent-moon marking and on their right they have a sun or star-like marking. Their birdlike face, which seems to be made of platinum, is fairly inexpressive and appears mask-like. While it looks hollow at first glance they do actually possess pupils. They glow white occasionally, but otherwise the sockets appear dark.
  • Their transmutation curse takes the appearance of shadows. It might look either flame-like or wispy and ethereal. It feels cool to the touch, almost like mist.
  • Backstory
  • Though much of Macha's actual history is shrouded in mystery, there is a legend that is believed to tell the tale of their origin. Of course, the validity of the story is mostly left up to speculation, as names within the text are often not specific. The character believed to be Macha in the story is usually just referred to as "The Knight".

  • Born in a very small centicorn kingdom, Macha was surrendered as a kit by their parents who could no longer take care of them. They were adopted by the court oracle, a rather gruff Centicorn with close ties to the local ruler, and well known for his devotion to the Gods and his gift of clairvoyancy which he was rumored to have been blessed with. He planned to raise Macha as the model spinx; an example to all spinx that lived in the kingdom. The Oracle told Macha that the moment they earned his respect they would be awarded a Centicorn gift of their own.
Macha was not an unruly child and dutifully obeyed their superiors, training as a royal knight from a young age - thought of as controllable due to the threat of being cursed and exiled for acting against the centicorn of the kingdom. They were raised in close proximity to the royal family and befriended the daughter of the local ruler. The Oracle believed it was a good idea to make them the bodyguard of the princess because of their bond.

Though close, Macha would not allow the princess to give them the Centicorn gift, believing that someday they would earn the Oracle's respect. Though no matter how hard they tried, no matter how dutiful they acted, no matter how well they served the Centicorn and the will of the Gods, the Oracle always refused.

The princess watched as Macha failed time and time again to appeal to the Oracle. As a response, the princess began to teach Macha the basics of spellwork and allowed them access to the knowledge that her family had kept hidden away. Her hope was that Macha would eventually choose to accept her gift instead.

Macha instantly took a shine to magic and the more scholarly fields with her guidance and began developing their own magical theories and spells using the framework of Centicorn spellcraft. However, this thirst for knowledge unlocked something dark within the spinx - an unfathomable abyss that had been left by the Oracle's constant rejection.

After the festivities of the princess's coronation, Macha murdered the Oracle and concocted a powerful spell using his bones to give themself immortality - but at a great price. The gods cursed them forever, the abyss of their heart consuming their flesh in an ethereal, ghostly mist and stealing away their face - a curse reserved for only the worst spinx.

Upon discovery, the Centicorn demanded Macha banished to the Dead Lands. Heartbroken, the princess gave Macha her diadem as a token to carry with them during their exile. Macha crafted this diadem into an object to fully bind their soul to the world and return to if their body was destroyed.

In the time that followed, kingdoms rose and fell, cities were built and buried. Macha remains - a phantom haunting the ruins of the Dead Lands in eternal punishment.

However, much of this story is thought to be untrue, as no official records could ever be found corroborating it and certain details either are implausible or entirely the work of fiction. For example, the bones of a Nephfeian carry no magic inherently within them, so the fact that the Knight used the bones to concoct a spell seems implausible if not entirely impossible. Most scholars agree that it is merely a legend.

  •  Nyx   Friend?
Just two necromancers that chill out sometimes. Macha occasionally visits him for tea and pets his ghost animals. They don't typically converse, but they don't mind each other's company.
  •  Lilith   Friend
Macha consider themselves kindred spirits, likely due to their mutual distaste for the gods and interests in exploring taboo magic-types. Macha doesn't mind helping her with her goals and sometimes spends several months living with her, Magnus, and Merlin in Atala.
  •  Magnus  Acquaintance
Magnus and Macha are on speaking terms, but not necessarily friends. Macha finds Magnus's magic and his ideology quite interesting, but otherwise doesn't interact with him much. Magnus typically keeps Macha at an arm's length, afraid that Macha will eventually turn on them.
  •  Merlin  Friend
Merlin and Macha seem to know each other exceptionally well, as if they have been friends for quite a long time. Merlin is one of the few people Macha seems very open and relaxed around. During their visits to Atala, Merlin tends to be the one they spend the most time with and the two sometimes travel together.
  •  Trivia
  • ● Their primary weapon is a custom spear which was given to them long ago. It was originally unnamed, though they later named it "Requiem" when they swore vengeance upon the Gods.
  • ● Macha trades bones, meat, pelts, and other material for goods. Money is fairly meaningless to them.
