Evander Ridgway

Evander is what you might consider an absolute nightmare. If it was 1862, you might consider him a 'wretch'. In modern day, he's the type of character you'd see on the sidewalk and cross the street. Or at least, you would if he ever went outside. 

As the child of an extremely wealthy and renowned family, Evander had very little attention from his parents growing up. So he acted out. So his parents berated him. So he acted out more. Fast forward a decade, maybe decade and a half: he is estranged from his family, freelancing as a software developer, living alone in an apartment and never leaving. His parents held him to a very high standard that he couldn't reach; his behavior was seen as a stain on the family name. His parents supported him financially through college, but never visited or spoke to him, and cut him off entirely post-graduation.

Because of his upbringing, where every single mistake was a failing and likely to show up in the tabloids, Evander is unspeakably anxious around most people. Going outside terrifies him; he's scared of being recognized, or being looked at like he's some kind of freak. He manages to leave on occasion if absolutely necessary, but hides underneath layers and layers of clothing. He's usually greasy and unkempt and always cold. He has no sense of time. All the curtains in his apartment stay closed, and so he can stay up or sleep for days on end without even noticing. He covers his fear with anger; he can't stand the idea of getting close to people, so every good deed is returned with anger. 

Because of this, he has no other people in his life. He has a lot of imaginary friends and a rotating cast of people who appear repeatedly in his vivid dreams. He talks to himself and talks in his sleep. 

Despite his erratic behaviour, Evander is pretty intelligent. He graduated a year early from a prestigious university with a degree in software engineering. He doesn't think he's capable of grad school, but would definitely succeed if he could just get out of his own way.
