Profile
Killian has a big heart that he keeps tucked deep inside the pocket of his hawaiian shirt. His genuine nature can be mistaken by strangers as strange, duplicitous, or fake, but he's completely sincere in everything he does. You can take a compliment from him at complete face value, no matter how abstract he might present it (e.g. "Y'know, you remind me of an art teacher that lets the emo kids sit under their classroom's tables during lunch"). His quirky charisma sits atop an inner layer of shaky-at-best self worth, but he's working on being able to take a compliment as well as he can dish them.
A particularly generous elementary school teacher once described Killian as seeming like a "lifelong learner", which anyone who talks to him for more than two seconds could easily agree with. His knowledge is specific and niche, but far-reaching in genre. He can reliably be found buried in a book, scrolling through a research paper, or intently reading every word of every plaque in a museum.
One of his biggest flaws is his elusiveness. He keeps his phone on silent, if it's even on him at all, making him hard to reach. You're more likely to run into him in public than get a text back, unless you know him extremely well, in which case he'd prefer to call you anyway. He's working on being more reachable, but there's an iron gate around the deepest part of his heart.
Personality
Killian is a chill guy - perhaps to a fault. He exudes "cool" to anyone who doesn't know him, and "extreme dork" to anyone who does. While he can slip into the role of being the life of the party, he's much more comfortable quietly playing pinball alone at his local arcade. His stories are endless (and unbelievable to most), and he can perorate on for far too long about a vast range of topics. Enemies would describe him as "someone who would lie about seeing every episode of The Simpsons"; strangers would say he "secretly seems like he should be taking more naps, or at least drink less coffee"; acquaintances think he's "a fun guy, if he could shut up about extinct aquatic mammals"; friends might say he "knows an unreasonable amount about the history of the Chuck E Cheese animatronics, and would definitely climb into a McDonalds playplace despite being a fully grown adult"; and his best friends would agree with all of the above.
Surroundings
Killian can usually be found anywhere an eleven year old would want to be - arcades, roller skating rinks, abandoned houses, climbing trees, science museums, etc. His apartment is maximalist to the brim, covered in salon-style hung paintings, giant gaudy palm leafed plants, a genuine bowling alley carpeted floor, neon lights, articulated reconstructions of fossils as decor, and Memphis design furnature. His desk is covered in things that inspire him, like weird dolls he finds at thrift stores and candles that smells like cinnamon and musk.
Favorites
As for music, Killian will listen to just about anything, the more isoteric the better - his personal playlist contains a lot of well-remembered nostalgic synthpop and classic goth rock, but also deeper cuts that the radio righteously forgot, and offputting mashup songs.
He's a bit of a picky eater, in way that can seem strange to some - he turns his nose up at squash and tomato sauce, but will happily try anything with spinach (like palak paneer, one of his favorites), and loves mushrooms in just about everything. Anything too sugary makes his teeth hurt, but he enjoys ultra-sweet wagashi as long as he can wash it down with bitter matcha. His absolute favorite dishes include tonkatsu ramen, yuba knots, cheese and mushroom pizza, malai kofta, green curry with baby corn, and peanut butter pie. As for drinks, he'll try any kind of coffee (but is especially partial to caramel lattes), and enjoys most teas. Soda is too saccharine for him, but he'll enjoy a birch beer or butterscotch soda on occasion.
His hobbies include roller skating around town while walking several dogs, getting stuck in plastic tube slides at playgrounds at 3 am, chopping and skewing promotional and instructional videos from the 50s-90s, and starting philisophical debates about what can be considered a sandwich.
Jake is Killian's best friend! They met at an extinct animals support group, and seem to the observer like an unlikely duo, but they're more similar than you might think - both come across as cool, though in different ways; both are obsessed with a bygone or niche aesthetic (late 80s for Killian, leather scene for Jake); and both can pierce through the other's outer facades like a hot knife through butter. Jake makes Killian more vulnerable, Killian makes Jake more calm.
Do they speak to each other? How do they communicate? Is it...telepathic? Only Killian and Heaven know. They go bowling together.
Enzo owns a nearby arcade that Killian frequents. The two have polite conversation, and get along well, but haven't hung out outside of the arcade yet. Enzo fears the day that Killian will bring in all the tickets he's been racking up to the prize counter.
Their energies are on the opposite ends of the chaotic spectrum, with Mat being energetic and bouncy and Killian being chill. Killian loves visiting Mat's aquarium because they're a suprisingly great listener, plus their hugs could realign a giraffe's spine. Mat appreciates that Killian treats them as an equal with feelings, instead of as just a freakshow performer.
