Apocalypse survivor: Valkyrie was born during a time of unrest on her homeworld, as climate change threatened mass starvation and flooding. As she grew up the situation worsened - billions died and peaceful states descended into anarchy. She and her parents did whatever they had to to survive.
Military commissar: Valkyrie was an internal spymaster in an imperial army battalion. She made sure that the men were loyal, and did not fall back unless ordered. This made her unpopular, but she gained great skill at detecting the slightest dishonesty.
