Abilities: Kalven is an adept user of water elemental magic, qualifying as a wizard by standard measures, although it's not a title he uses much. He is also a particularly skilled flier, especially agile and adept at navigating in high winds.

Appearance:

Dark skin, pale grey hair (mostly short, but with a queue/low ponytail) and wings. Blue eyes. Paints himself with symbols of balance and growth; often uses rainbow colors to symbolize the coming together of many hues into a whole that coexists rather than erasing any of them. 5'10". Lean -- high muscle definition, low bulk. Wings are large; soft feathers; most closely resemble a great grey owl's.

Personality:

Kalven values balance and moderation above all things. He believes that pure good and pure evil do not exist; everything appears in shades of grey. As such, he always seeks to find the good in the bad and the bad in the good, even if it doesn't exist. This makes him an odd mix of optimistic and pessimistic; he'll treat good fortune with suspicion, but sympathize with those whose evil intent seems plain. He is deeply religious, but eschews most of the traditional religions of the Realms because he believes their portrayals of the gods are too binary, too black-or-white, good-or-evil. Rather, he believes that gods are not inherently good or evil, but fundamentally neutral; "good" and "evil" are mortal values that they project onto the gods, who actually embody more neutral ideas such as "life" and "destruction". As a native Noctisian -- and a Ceis avian -- his primary worship is for Seitan and Albion, but he carries the Noctisian ambiguous attitude towards Albion to an extreme, honoring the dark god just as much as he does Seitan. He firmly believes -- and will tell anyone who will listen -- that chaos is just as important as order. Without chaos, order will stagnate, not to mention repressing anything that does not fit into its established order.

Kalven loves talking to others about his views, and sometimes it can be difficult to get a word in edgewise. He is generally harmless and has no taste for combat, though his tendency to try and sympathize with evil can get both himself and others in trouble. Despite or perhaps because of this, he has a notable reckless streak, and enjoys flying in storms.

History (backstory):

Born in Gilzelfa to a traditional Ceis family, Kalven rather disappointed them by failing to attract a god's approval and become a cleric himself. (He feels disappointment over this as well, but tells himself that it would never suit him to be cleric to only a single god; he must spread understanding of all of them.) Since his unorthodox religious views barred him from the priestly profession, he instead became a scholar, specializing in philosophy, and thus further developed his ideas. He's led a fairly uneventful life up to this point, mostly focusing on refining and spreading his views.

Though he doesn't care for traditional Realm religions, he strongly opposes the Faction of Hope and its attempts to impose unity and certainty where he believes there should be multiplicity and tolerance.
