Kouen is a smart and quite capable boy.
Starting the Academy he had a difficulty character to deal with; he was stubborn, pretty temperamental and kind of noisy, grumpy and a mocking person but after reaching the chunin rank he changed. He thought that now the expectations people had on him were higher so he learned to listen, to analyze and to act according the situacion, becoming someone more mature and somewhat calculating.
