Joseph was a genius engineer with a gambling habit, which led him down a dark path. He ended up being enrolled into the big daddy program against his will, and left to wander through Arcadia. This left him with no memories from his time before, except for a vague recollection of his niece, Loretta.

Joseph came from a struggling family who never had any real belief in their son. He grew up always knowing that there was more to life, but not knowing how to go about it.
He was contacted by Rapture's representatives and quickly joined, along with his sister Diane. Unfortunately he found it difficult adjusting to life in Rapture and turned to gambling to cope, and then to thievery when he lost most of his money. That's what led him to prison, and then eventually the big daddy program. With no memories of who he was, Jo spent a long time like any other big daddy before reuniting with Loretta and unlocking some of his memories.
Years later, he and Loretta made it to the surface to start a new life. Loretta contacted Tenenbaum and helped get Jo surgery to remove the suit, leaving him heavily scarred and spliced, but more himself again.
