ABOUT
"That sounds sick as hell." -Tal
My current D&D character, set in Eberron!
Tal Revernal is a tiefling bard with an appreciation for a good story and a worthwhile adventure. He's driven by the desire to do great deeds worthy of being written about. He's generally pretty chill and tends to think the chaos his party members get them roped into is going to end up getting him killed. He's probably right.
Born in Sharn, the City of Towers, Tal grew up learning about the history of Eberron in the city's libraries. He left the city to study at a College of Literature, and after two years returned to Sharn as the city dealt with a dangerous criminal organization called the Daask. After being called upon for help by a childhood friend, the captain of the Sharn Watch, for help, he joined five other adventurers to root out the heart of the problem. The group went undercover into the Daask, going on several missions under the pretense of helping them. After being betrayed by a changeling disguised as a party member's friend, they scrambled to stop the leader of the Daask from gaining a weapon they had inadvertently helped assemble. After failing to retrieve the weapon, in a last ditch effort, The party uncovered the headquarters of the Daask and confronted it's leader, slaying him and disassembling the Daask as a result.
Following this victory, the party dealt with the consequences of destroying the Daask and it's effect on the city. They reunited after a few weeks apart at the request of mysterious letters sent to each of them. After staying overnight at an inn they found themselves thrown back in time to the peak of The Last War, and now they work to find a way out and back to their own time without causing too much damage to the past in the process.

Personality
Friendly
Tal is generally a very friendly guy, utelizing his good humor and lighthearted persona to convince people to like him. He generally tries to avoid conflict, preferring to persuade his way out of sticky situations with flattery and de-escalation (never flirting), but is skilled enough to put up a fight should the need arise, which it often does. Tal has a great sense of comedic timing and very few moments with him are without a quip or two, which isn't always recieved well based on his current audience, leaning pretty heavily into situational comedy and sarcasm. However, when he's irritated (or traumatized, a frequent event with the party he travels with), the humor drops.
Gardener
Tal maintains a decent sized garden in his apartment, sacrificing a second bedroom in favor of his plants. He specializes in flowers, particularly appreciating blue irises. He has connections throughout the city of Sharn to buyers interested in his gardening, and he also supplies slightly less legal plants to handful of other buyers in the area on the side.
Historian
Tal spent much of his childhood in the city libraries and gained a deep appreciation for the old stories about great heroes and daring adventures, aspiring to follow in their footsteps. He now keeps a detailed (if occasionally exaggerated) journal of the adventures he's taken with his party, hoping to one day be a hero worthy of telling stories about. He also has a deep and varied knowledge of history in Khorvaire as a result of his reading and college education, which tends to be helpful. Having grown up in such a diverse city with a wealth of knowledge, he holds the foundational belief that everyone is capable of good.
Flawed
Tal doesn't have an incredible sense of hypothetical risk assessment, usually agreeing to an adventure if it sounds like it'll make a cool story, but ends up being a bit less courageous when in those situations in person. When a traumatic event occurs, such as being brought to the brink of death or crashing an airship, he tends to freeze up and has trouble re-engaging in action or conversation. He considers himself lucky to have his companions at his side when he freezes like this.
Illusionist
Tal enjoys finding creative solutions to problems, even if those solutions are substantially more complicated then they need to be. He's a talented illusionist, and has used his skills in a variety of situations to assist in encounters, like pretending to be someone's grandmother to grab their attention or crashing an illusory chandelier as a distraction so he and his companions could escape. Besides that as his main school of magic, he is also skilled in healing spells and a handful of plant related abilities.
Moral Compass
Supplemented by Reverend, a Warforged friend of his, Tal tries to keep the party morally on track. He often finds it hard to rationalize working with them, as a number of his companions find it perfectly fine to commit murder if the need arises. Tal finds needless conflict reprehensible, and has communicated such with his party on a number of occasions. He thinks he's making progress but it's honestly hard to tell.

Story
Backstory
Tal was born in Sharn to two tiefling parents, part of a long line of tieflings that originated from another continent. The two of them immigrated during the Last War into Sharn in the midst of political struggles in Xen’drik. Tal’s upbringing was solidly average. His parents were often off on business trips, supporting their middle-class household in one of Sharn’s many apartment buildings, and so he spent much of his time with a family friend and exploring the city. Living in Sharn, Tal was mostly sheltered from the horrors of The Last War, but he heard his fair share of stories and saw the effects it had on people.
While his parents were away, Tal was looked after by a long time friend of his parents, Firdaus, who he saw as a surrogate uncle. He did a lot of the upbringing work, and more specifically taught him the ins and outs of gardening, his main field of work. Firdaus grew and managed all sorts of different plants that people in Sharn needed in his greenhouse, from medical herbs to spices, decorative flowers to less legal substances. He was kind of weird, but being a part of Firdaus’s work and helping him with his business inspired a love of horticulture in Tal, which he continues to cultivate to this day. Firdaus’s great humor rubbed off on him, and he developed a good sense of comedic timing.
When Tal wasn’t working, he spent much time exploring the busy streets of Sharn, where he made friends and connections, as well as learned the colorful history of the City of Towers. Most important to him, he invested thousands of hours in the libraries, poring over ancient tomes and legends, resulting in a rich knowledge of the histories of Khorvaire and the greater Eberron. His love of stories only grew, and he decided that eventually he wanted to become a great hero like the ones recalled in myths, beginning his own writing career from an early age, writing fiction as well as exaggerated retellings of his own adventures. Time spent in the libraries also allowed him to glean a rudimentary understanding of magic, specifically the illusory school, which he began to evolve his aptitude in over time.
In his late teenage years, Tal learned a bit of fencing in his off time and took a few minimum wage jobs to afford his own small apartment in Sharn. When Tal reached early adulthood, he won a scholarship in a college focused on the literary arts, and left Sharn to study there for a four year period. He learned a lot about writing good stories and more about the history of Eberron, both from mythological and factual standpoints. While away at college, he gained a greater appreciation for the musical arts, and though he never got any good at it, he came across a strange eastern instrument called an Otamatair from a trader passing through and continues to attempt learning it. Tal made a lot of close friendships and found that both his sense of humor and a knack for plant cultivation made him a popular student. At several points during his first two years at college, Tal journeyed outside the campus with his college buddies, looking for danger and points of interest. This proved to be especially dangerous directly following the end of The Last War, and Tal barely avoided several scrapes that could have cost him his life.
Right around the two year mark at twenty years old, Tal decided to take a gap year and return to Sharn. It isn’t entirely clear if he was expelled or just wanted a break, but he ended up back in his apartment nonetheless. As always, he’s now on the lookout for a good story to tell.

Reverend
[ Companion ]
As the fellow moral compass of the party, Tal holds a deep respect for Reverend and his often straightforward and simple manner of thinking. Reverend has saved Tal's life on a number of occasions and the two work together as a team remarkably well.
Bimmblegup
[ Companion ]
Bimmblegup is endlessly fascinating to Tal who has been trying to figure out exactly what they are since he first met them. After their first overarching mission drew to a close, Bimmblegup stayed in Tal's apartment as a roomate, having nowhere else to go, and the two of them spent some time attempting to learn more about Bimmblegup's mysterious past. They aren't exactly the pinnacle of being social, but the two get along well enough that Tal considers them a friend.
Dingleberry
[ Companion ]
Tal considers Dingleberry a good friend. The two didn't interact much in the early weeks of them working together, but over time he developed a fondness for the Aarakocra. He appreciates her level-headedness and willingness to go along with whatever stupid plans the group collectively comes up with. She's a very capable warrior.
Snurk
[ Companion ]
Tal has a bit of a love-hate relationship with Snurk, one he's unsure is reciprocated or if the Grung ranger simply tolerates him. He has an appreciation for Snurk's apparent fun-loving and adventure seeking nature, and finds his brunt and to-the-point manner of speaking endearing. However, Snurk's unhesitating ability to jump into violence and kill enemies without remorse causes him to second guess how he feels about him.
Trinic Moonfell
[ Companion ]
Trinic is a very righteous man, if brutal and distrusting at times, and Tal considers him a very close friend. The two have a fun dynamic and see eye-to-eye on most matters, and most of all Tal is impressed with his incredible mustache, masterfully maintained.
