A Quick Summary

2176450_Bh1g6fPD0NoBQEN.png?1524776749

Morrígan is a witch who lives alone in the woods and surrounds herself in the company of birds. Her main job is as a seamstress. Those who first meet her wouldn't think she was a witch at all. She's a kind and light-hearted lady who loves to joke around and play along. Her life is simple and mostly free of stress. There is little that she worries about and very little that can offend her. She doesn't trouble herself with small things and, unless it's very important, she's not going to argue.

When she's not working, she experiments with new medicines. The medicines are made to combat certain magical illnesses that modern medicine cannot fix. She has considered finding an assistant for testing her medicines, but she's not sure how ethical that'd be...

Many of the townsfolk tell scary stories about her to keep their children away. They claim that being around her brings nothing but bad luck. Her reputation among the townsfolk is split. Some of them love her; some of them fear her. She likes to humor the young ones' wild imaginations and promises she won't eat them.

Her last name "Cras" is pronounced as "cross." She doesn't like it when people say it as "crass", which means something completely different!

Morrígan's fur is blessed with the ability to "reflect" lighting conditions - her appearance mimics a shadow. Her fur changes gradually, similar to a transition lens. She'll shift from merle to white or black.
She has learned how to disable this ability willingly, and she can appear as her default coat if she feels like it.

"I've already had my fill of blood sacrifices. It looks like you get to live another day, dear!"

Design Notes

  • Morrígan's fur changes according to the sky; her black merle coat is her original appearance.
  • In overcast weather with no sunlight, her fur is white.
  • In sunny weather, her fur is black.
  • In partially cloudy weather, her fur is merle.
  • The merle pattern doesn't have to be 100% accurate!
  • The crow foot marking is only on the left side of her neck.
  • Her paw pads and nails are black, like her nose.
  • Her tongue is pale pink.

Trivia

  • Cras means "tomorrow."
  • Morrígan can speak fluent demonic and broken angelic.
  • She can mimic bird calls to an almost supernatural degree.
  • A giant magical, talking raven lives in her house.
    (It's not suspicious at all.)

Appearance

2665355_Y5Lvlzyel.png?1524776848

Morrígan is a Mudi with light blue eyes. She has entirely white and black wavy fur with scattered splotches throughout, accented with a few speckles. She has a distinct corvid footprint mark on the left side of her neck. Her coat is merle by default, but she also has the ability to change her colors according to the skies.

Morrígan's fur is blessed with the ability to "reflect" lighting conditions - her appearance mimics a shadow. Her fur changes gradually, similar to a transition lens. She'll shift from merle to white or black, fading out her spots and leaving only her ear tips, tail tip, eye marks, and the corvid mark upon her neck visible. Her eyes change to light brown in her white and black forms.
In overcast weather with no sunlight, her fur appears white.
In partially cloudy weather, her fur appears merle.
In clear, sunny weather, her fur appears black.

While visually appealing, her ever-changing fur makes it difficult to hide or can sometimes be annoying in constantly changing skies. She has learned how to disable this ability on command, and she can appear as her default coat if she feels like it.

Apparel

Morrígan wears a black collar with a row of brown and light blue beads in the center and three small corvid feathers hanging from a small strand at the front. She has a single earring on her left ear with a string and a single small feather. She also wears two larger feathers behind her left ear.

The feathers are black with darker stripes and a bit of white speckles on the end. They are supposedly from her corvid friends.

Powers & Abilities

Aside from her color changing ability, Morrígan does not appear to have any powers or special abilities. If she does, she's not going to show or tell.

However, some townsfolk talk of her ageless appearance and how she hasn't changed in years. She does not confirm or deny these rumors.

Personality

Morrígan is a witch who lives alone in the woods and surrounds herself in the company of birds. Her main job is as a seamstress. Those who first meet her wouldn't think she was a witch at all. She's a kind and light-hearted lady who loves to joke around and play along. Her life is simple and mostly free of stress. Every morning consists of her waking up to the sunlight and making a cup of tea. She wings her daily schedule from there and goes with the flow. There is little that she worries about and very little that can offend her. She doesn't trouble herself with small things and, unless it's very important, she's not going to argue.

While she may live alone, she isn't against visitors, as long as they behave. In fact, she enjoys having more company besides her birds. She gets along best with others who have a sense of humor and willingly listens to people ramble about their passions for hours on end.

When she's not working, she experiments with new medicines. The medicines are made to combat certain magical illnesses that modern medicine cannot fix. They're mostly for the townsfolk, but she has started offering her services to other clients. She has considered finding an assistant for testing her medicines, but she's not sure how ethical that'd be...

She knows a lot more than she lets on. As a witch, she has dabbled in the dark arts and can speak with demons. She knows a great deal about dark and blood magic, demons, and angels, but she refuses to share that detail with others. She doesn't want to influence others into trying it out as well. It's a very dangerous hobby, and she knows the risks. Her knowledge comes in handy when she's dealing with curses and particularly deadly and stubborn magical illnesses.

Many of the townsfolk tell scary stories about her to keep their children away. They claim that being around her brings nothing but bad luck. Her reputation among the townsfolk is split. Some of them love her; some of them fear her.
Still, Morrígan comes to town to deliver orders and go shopping like any other normal person. She likes to humor the young ones' wild imaginations and promises she won't eat them.

She raises a variety of birds around her woodland home, like chickens, ducks, doves, and very rarely exotic species. Her closest companions are the wild crows and magpies that visit her every day for food. She has trained a few of them to carry out tasks for her, in case she's unable to leave her house to gather supplies. Her corvid friends are capable of identifying a large variety of plants and materials on their own, but they also like to bring her gifts that they may or may not have picked from the townsfolk. She brings the more expensive "gifts" into town with her, just in case. The townsfolk do seem to lose their keys and jewelry quite often.

Her last name "Cras" is pronounced as "cross." She doesn't like it when people say it as "crass", which means something completely different!

Residence

Morrígan lives alone in the woods and a small distance away from a popular mountain path for travelers. She has a pretty decently-sized home with two floors, but the walls are partially overgrown with vines and covered in foliage. The entire house is designed to be convenient for her bird friends with easy entrances, perches all over, nests, and other amenities for them. She even has several birdhouses and coops right outside in her garden.

She uses her home as a shelter for weary travelers and also a place for patients to stay. Her shelves and food stores are always stocked up with supplies for herself and potential visitors.

For some reason, she's not even worried about bad people attempting to ruin her home or torment her birds. It's said that those who attempt to mess with her mysteriously vanish and never return, and most people don't feel like testing that theory out.

Backstory

Morrígan grew up in town, raised by her grandmother who taught her everything. By her teens, she was already working as a seamstress, creating dresses and suits for customers and following her grandmother's trade.

When her grandmother passed away, Mori inherited their house and everything that she left behind. After the funeral, she mysteriously disappeared. The townsfolk didn't see or hear of Mori for up to a week. Many of them grew concerned and checked the house, where they found no trace of her, except for a few ashes and corvid feathers.

Then, suddenly, Mori started appearing in town again, acting as if nothing had happened. She was shopping around as usual, but everybody had noticed that she seemed different somehow. They saw how her fur suddenly shifted to white as the skies changed and were confused. When asked, she said nothing about it. She continued to return to town once in a while, and some townsfolk started accepting it as normal. They were just happy to have her back and that she was okay.

Every time she'd come to the town, Mori went to lengths to keep her neck covered, even during sunny weather. Unfortunately, a young and curious child accidentally pulled it off one day. At that point, a few of the elders had noticed a strange mark upon her neck - something that resembled a bird's footprint. She ran immediately. They made claims that she had been marked by a demon, and that was only the start of all the rumors...

When a magical illness spread throughout the town, the townsfolk quickly found that their normal medicines could not combat the mysterious plague and were at a loss. Upon receiving the news from a passing traveler, Mori, wanting to help her town more than she cared about hiding away, returned to town to help develop a cure.

Mori had to make trips back and forth to her home in the woods to gather materials, making the process much slower. Not wanting to run out of time, she started sending birds with supplies and messages to the town doctor instead. A little over a month later, they finally beat the plague, with most of the younger townsfolk being grateful to her and the doctor.

Eventually, Mori became comfortable with her appearance and made no effort to hide the mark. She would walk into town and greet everybody with a smile. Some of the townsfolk even welcomed her. The elders called her a "witch" for what she did, but, instead of being upset, she accepted her new title as the local "witch" and advertised her services to people. She gladly went along with the stories and began to own the "witch" theme, complete with her love for corvids.

Because she was living in the woods now and had no use for it, Mori gifted her grandmother's house to the doctor and helped them fix it up into a proper "hospital" of sorts. She gathered all the important things - keepsakes and photos - from the house into a box and brought it home.

Back at her home in the woods and with all her bird companions, Mori was simply content with working as a seamstress again and, now, a witch on the side, too. She continues to offer her services and support to the town, and she has started extending them to travelers who seek her out.
